  • Eight people have no soul.

  • Thank you for posting, he was a great singer and it is important that we hear him.

  • wunderbar ich glaube

  • sosnowiczanin :)

  • @globalman I see Eggert was born in 1912, so she is going to be 100 next year. I cannot find any record of them doing Merry Widow at the met. l in the data base for met. opera archives but he sang these opera's at the met.---- Boheme, Carmen, Tosca, Manon, Rigoloetto plus Tosca for a total of 33 metropolitan opera performances.

  • Comment removed

  • @globman Wow! you met Eggert who is alive and must now be 100 years by now. She sang even in her 90's.

  • @globalman thank you for the good information. They where smart leaving, just because the Nazis said they would look the other way doesn't mean anything, who would take the word of the Nazis anyhow and if the mind set changed they both would have wound up dead like Josef Schmidt who did leave but wound up in a Swiss internment camp and died at age 38.

  • @SHICOFF1 I met his younger son and widow the incomparable Martha Eggert in Zurich late 90's. They had been the Star couple late 20's and 30's. Opera, Operetta. Martha's mother was Jewish from Hungary....formerly Austro Hungarian Empire. The Nazi's said they would look the other way if they stayed but they didn't and fled. Were in Mexico and then crossed into the USA with Marcel Prawy, Austria's most famous musicologist and critic. They did 300 performances of Merry Widow at the Met. No DVD :-(

  • @globalman not at the Met but on Broadway.

  • Lovely singing. TY Tenor65 for posting.

  • I think this is the best perfomance of Nessum dorma I have ever heard. I find Kiepura really interesting and all I can say, he was the best tenor. But that's jut my personal opinion:)

.....cudowne dziecko dwoch wielkich narodow....doprady oszalamiajacy glos i ta technika.....

  • He was of Polish Jewish background because the Jews go by the mother and so that was his background and regardless he was a great and considered Polish by Birth of course.

  • @slownikqwerty I never heard much about that but Jan was proud of his Polish and Jewish backround just like Tauber, who was Austrian and raised a Catholic but with a Jewish Father. He had to leave Germany to save himself. I have a POLISH LP recording of him sing many arias from Italian and French opera, wonderful and not available anymore

  • I have read the comments and yes his Mother was Jewish and he was proud of her her back round but I wonder if he had to leave Poland during the war? His singing of the Flower song from Carmen was one of the best studio recording's of it I ever heard ! His wife Martha at 101 is still alive and and she sang also until recently. He sang Calaf even with his lyric spinto voice on stage very well. On top of all that he was a handsome man on stage.

  • who cares about his nationality ! Music has no nationality, it is coming from the heart and everyone has a heart. Even animals and plants can appreciate music and they do not care about nationality !

  • @annemarieclaudia who cares bout yr comments and yr exclamation marks? go and shout somewhere esle...

  • Jan Kiepura had an angelic voice that caresses the soul with a rainbow of colors leaving a lasting impression.

His film songs (hear at youtube) are unique for sweetness, sincerity and, his pre-war popularity was legendary.

Those who knew him always mention his kindness, and generosity.

Sometimes an artist has it all and Jan Kiepura certainly also gave his all to so many. one can be, this tenor rises to a level of excellence beyond so many o

  • Wow! I did not expect this kind of singing from Kiepura. I had always assumed he was a lightweight, but this has changed my mind. Well done.

  • What a wonderful glimpse from the past .He must have been a fine, sincere and committed singer.I could'nt give a stuff about his nationality. It's the performer that counts. The sound reminds me of Schmidt.

  • What a wonderful glimpse from the past.He must have been a fine, sincere and committed singer.

  • Warm voice and as a viennese... how could I not like him :)

  • @lukaszds so ''shock off'' :) u streesed the fact that he was Polish....I stressed the fact that he was Polish Jews :) so am I :) anyproblems with that? and dont give me this holocaust crap....if anyone has any isues it must be u appatently...

    Pozdrawiam :)

  • @laddo79 I totally agree with you. We should remember all these great Polish Jews. We barely have Jews in Poland nowadays so everything we can do is recall those who lived here and were a treasure for this country.

  • @ArthurRubinstein I think you can't say he is a Polish Jew. He was Polish. Only his mother was from a Jewish family but he was born in Poland. It's more proper to say he has some Jewish roots but he can't be considered a Polish Jew, I think...

  • @slownikqwerty of course you can say that,,,,,he was a Polish Jews...that was his identity...what does it mean ''only his mother''.....only? I guess that wasimp ortant not just 'only'.....he just like Szpilman and many otheres is an important bridge between Polishness and Jewishness...

  • A pity also Gedda did not record it.

  • @marcmo2004 He did

  • I didn't know this super singer.

Just one of my 3 favorite interpretations with Pav and Del Monaco.

Like Wunderlich in the Magic Flute, this is also fresh.

  • cleanears how right you are !!!!!!

Pavarotti had a beautiful voice but squandered it.

Domingo always the brides maid never the bride following

in Vickers footsteps but not filling .Carreras just flavour of the month . Kiepura brings poetry to the work /

  • What a voice, - never mind the expressive sobs :D

  • He was one of the originators of the role at the Vienna

opera to wild acclaim -hear his Vienna recording on you

    tube -just stunning !!!!!

  • Miguel Fleta !

  • I just discovered Kiepura, this is a wonderful, powerful and melodic voice. To the guy who called Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras 'the three clowns,' shame on you. Yes, the concerts were frivolous, but those are three great voices who re-invogorated the classic repertoire, brought millions of fans to opera, and distinguished themselves as great men and great figures of the operatic theater.

  • Er ist ein Gott! 5*

  • Now this is Nessun Dorma! So I guess there were singers pre those three clowns!

  • największa aria w wykonaniu największego... Tu nie potrzeba komentarza.

  • aachhh, ale tak uciąc ostatni dzwięk ...

  • Najlepsze wykonanie wedlug mnie :)

  • His Flower song from Carmen is his best recorded aria and really wonderful I have it on a Polish record. His mother was Jewish so I guess he was already singing at the met. in the late 30's or Hitler would have got him. Tauber also had that problem in Germany and left, Schmidt was not as lucky, got too Swiss but wound up in an internment camp and died at 38 years old. Kiepura's wife is still singing at age 93 and I have a tape made last yea, nice voice.

  • good

  • Not bad!

  • Nice. First time I've heard Kiepura, impressive. Also the first time I've heard ND in German. Not an opera buff but I like what I hear. Favourite is Lanza but not an operatic tenor by any means. Will listen for more and thanks for posting

  • Look,if you don't have a clue about classical singing then don't even bother others with your useless comments. This is a BRILLIANT performance and nothing else!

  • By saying this is an average performance you disqualify yourself at once. Of course, you don't that because you simply don't know it better. But for all the knowledgeablesout there people like you are a real pain in the neck. Note that I am saying...people like you. There are far too many out there. You said it right: Pavarotti good. Kiepura bad. That's all you know about classical music. And that says it all !! Get yourself a bit more expertise and then come back.

  • Keipura's singing was more refined than Pavarotti's...

  • "this is what I know about classical music!" hahahahahahaha ...or what you don't know! "This is my right to say..." yes it is , but it makes you look stupid in the eyes of everyone who knows a bit about something you don't have a clue and that is classical music. But keep writing your posts, they are funny!

  • @ilecieAbsolutley divine!

  • this is halftone higher than original...means high c in the end instead of b natural

  • If this in San Carlo, what language is he singing in? Polish? In Naples? Beautiful voice anyway. Have only heard about him. Never actually heard him. Thank you for posting.

  • Jan Kiepura is singing this aria in German.

I know that he sang Turandot at the "Wiener Staatsoper" with great success. Italian opera, performed in German in Naples?

    Perhaps it's Vienna!?

  • Z jakiego filmu pochodzi to wykonanie?

  • Pearl! :)

  • Legendarny Polski Tenor!

  • In the Theatre of San Carlo in Napoli :)

    Bravo!

  • Godly.

  • Pozdrowienia z Sosnowca!

    Greetings from Sosnowiec!

    :)

  • Stephen Costello would benefit from listening to Kiepura who knew how to sing

  • He had incredible piano...

  • Nessun dorma with high C ending!!!! wow!!!

  • Simply the best !!!

  • Nice singing and he made some good films. luckier then Tauber who had to move too London for being half jewish and schmidt who did not live through it but Kiepura was here in the USA (his mom was Jewish) he was at the met. He sang at the met once and many could not get in so he came out and sang for them until midnight, they used that idea in the Caruso film with Lanza. It never happened with Caruso though.

  • although i normally hate anything not sung in the original language to hear Jan Kiepura one can accept all. he was simply one of the greatest tenors of all time. Poland's treasure given to the world. thank you, grazie, dziękuję

  • effortless, not like some modern singers who strain like weightlifters to reach the high notes!

  • nice posting!

  • Excellent technique, very free and resonant high notes.

  • In German

  • czy to M.Eggerth płacze w 1 min 58 s?

  • Wydaje mi się, że tak.

  • What movie is this from?

  • Paulxxyyzz -Kiepuras' main career was both Germany ,and of course Austria (Vienna Opera )

He sang German because then that is what any artist did if singing in Germany and Austria or whatever european country . He considered himself a Polish patriot and gave many"Polish"

benefit concerts during war .He was a great

favourite of German and Austrian audiences. His wife Marta Eggerth ,in her 90s had a Vienna

day named after her recently .

  • Ucrebei 59-- You are assuming that the Bel Canto

Society (some of theses societies consist of one person ) what ever that is , has some insight into what is good singing .. some people thought

Pavarotti was a great ?! singer artist ...and so it goes .I for one tip my hat to Vickers

  • pavarotti was medially great. I mean he was famous. But technically (which is considered in musical terms) Pav was not any better than other lyric-spintos.

  • technically he was brilliant..but unfortunately he was lazy-that is the problem.we could see it since 80's.but He is still my favourite

  • the post was about Luciano Pavarotti

  • He sings heavenly and he is soooo handsome. He is a beautiful man with a beautiful voice.

I love to see and to hear him. Thanks Tenor 65.

    Hans NL

  • lepszy niż Pavarotti

  • Corelli is a "Möchtegern-Tenor" and Kiepura simply fanatastic!

  • Not being a voice expert I can only enjoy the singing. I leave the evaluation to exports but I do enjoy Kipura's voice. Post more if you have them. I really appreciate them all.

Does anyone know if he considered himself Jewish or was he Catholic? His mother was Jewish so the Nazis would have considered him as a Jew. Anyone know?

  • Does really matter?

  • He was Catholic as his father's family was. His mother was born in a Jewish family (living nearby Polish town Częstochowa, being under German occupation then) but was baptized when she was 15.

But anyway - does it matter?

  • I'd say a 1,000 times better - but apart from that I agree totally with what you say!

  • He is the best Polish singer, no discussion about that. But why sing this aria in German? Why sing it in Polish? It was written in Italian, and should be sung in Italian. No problem for Jan, who spoke Italian quite well and would have done it even better than in this record (and if Pavarotti had not lived - he would have been regarded as "Mr. Nessun Dorma"

  • Sorry, but I not at all impressed with that performance by Kiepura, the vocal style is lacking on so many fronts. No tenor before or since can come close to Corelli on this role!

  • Corelli was "loud" which does not make for great singing. Listen to the "greatest" tenors, Gigli, Bjorling, and Georges Thill, all of whom respected the composer whose indications of nuance are very clear, and to be "respected."

  • You don't understand opera, and great singing.

  • I do understand a public that does not recognize the difference between artistry and bellowing. There was a reason the PAST is referred to as: THE GOLDEN AGE of SINGING

  • Corelli was voted tenor of the century by the Bel Canto Society! In many opera experts opinion he was considered the best dramatic/spinto tenor of all time. Not bad for someone who is "loud" eh!

  • no,no Caruso

  • Artist had to sing in german read more about polish history and you will know;) I am from poland

  • what a great singer !!!

  • No tenor on the stage today can match Kiepura or any of the Golden Age tenors.

  • A więc witaj! :-)

  • Zgadzam się;)

  • bardzo ladnie!!

  • He is said to be the best Polish tenor ever. And was forced that time to sing in German. I had never the chance to sing nessun dorma in Polish on the highest level. That's a real pity.

  • gran tenor

  • just beautiful and sensitive singing of a work

that is belted out for high C's by most tenors

  • Mi incanta questo sensibile tenore lirico d'altri tempi!
