you can live for quite a while without oxygen, its more a problem of getting thrown 15 feet in the air and then having the lip of the wave drive you so deep so fast your eardrums break and then you get bounced on the bottom, which depending where you are could be made of rocks and coral. this could happen several times depending on your luck.
