well with equivalent exchange (alchemy-mod) you can change 2 cactus to 1 log. that log you can chop up and cook other logs with it, so you get coal. that coal you can transmute into glowstone. 4 glowstone makes a glowstone block and 8 glowstone blocks make 2 gold ore. you can then combine 4 gold ore to make a diamond.

690 /2 = 345 wood *3/4 = roughly 260 coal /4 =65 Glowstone dust = 16 glowstone blocks => 4 gold ore = a diamond...

doesnt sound like much, but you can create diamonds with time

@StarToTheDust I do so as well, I certainly don't need 690 cacti an hour for it. 20 an hour were enough for me (they grow up to 3 blocks, so you need almost none cos in the way of "normally" harvesting, you always get the double amount of cacti which are in the farm)

@10kinimod I can find a few simple uses for dirt. Gravel is a whole lot worse -- completely useless. As for the cacti, I could use them to make a nice little wall to keep out any unwanted visitors, or I could use them for mob traps that are solely meant for killing. Then again, you're probably right in the sense that cacti are rather limited in usefulness.
