  • I hate that stupid song in the end.. relax, hipster.

  • ''Ever since reading Thoreau's Walden, I have been teased by the notion

of leading a life with only the bare essentials and peacefulness. I

lacked the nerve to find that little cottage and plant those rows of

beans. Bill Cunningham lives a life as pure and idealistic as

Thoreau's, and he does it in the middle of Manhattan. Until a few

years ago, when he was evicted by his landlord, Bill lived in a tiny

rent-controlled apartment in Carnegie Hall. -- ROGER EBERT

  • ''In "Bill Cunningham New York," Bill celebrates his

80th bday. Every day of his life he still pedals around Manhattan

on his bicycle, taking photographs of what people are wearing. He has

been famous for many years for doing this, and his work has been

featured in such places as Women's Wear Daily, Vogue, and the original

Details magazine. U can find him featured in big spreads in the

New York Times, whose publisher, Sulzberger, was among those

at his birthday party. -- EBERT

  • ''Do not make the mistake of calling Bill Cunningham a "fashion

photographer." He is a photographer of people and what they wear.

Don't call him a "paparazzo." He doesn't know who half the celebrities

are and doesn't care. He's genuinely fascinated by what people wear —

not by haute couture, but by what makes people feel good about

themselves. He cycles to social events ...will stop in the middle of the

street if he spots an interesting hat. -- EBERT

  • ''I mentioned his laugh. This is a man who seems always delighted. He

smiles and laughs warmly and easily. Does that makes him sound …

simple? There is nothing simple about Bill Cunningham, who is an

artist and a philosopher. Here's what it is: Bill is happy. He has

invented an occupation he does better than anyone else ever has, he

has simplified his life until nothing interferes with that vocation,

and now, at over 80, he is still biking around Manhattan ... -- ROGER EBERT

  • ''It doesn't matter if you care nothing at all about clothing, fashion

or photography. You might still enjoy "Bill Cunningham New York,"

because here is a good and joyous man who leads a life that is perfect

for him, and how many people do we meet like that? This movie made me

happy every moment I was watching it.'' - ROGER EBERT

  • ''Cunningham is vague about his life. He seems to have all the money he

needs, but not from a rich family. The director of this documentary, asks: "You don't need to answer this,

but have you ever had a romantic relationship? Bill is delighted by

the question and laughs spontaneously: "Are you asking if I'm gay?" He

doesn't say if he is or not, but his reply seems to suggest that he

wasn't raised to think much about sex and doesn't. He loves his work

too much.'' - ROGER EBERT review

  • velvet underground cameo!!

  • such a beautiful documentary. i burst into tears when "i'll be your mirror" came on in the closing scene, such a wonderful role model

  • I saw this film last night and it's now one of my favorite documentaries. It's absolutely beautiful.

  • Bill could find fashion anywhere. It doesn't have to be NYC - but that is his long time home and he's able to move around easily. For example: he couldn't get around to everywhere in one night in a city like L.A. on a bike (or even in a car!)...he's such an inspiration. And, why clog your life up with kitchens and romance if the alternative could be something and someone as wonderful as Bill? Love him and loved this film.

  • very myopic..there are plenty of fashion forward people outside Manhattan

  • @milsedd There are just more of them in one place there. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. And that guy has a hell of an eye. I saw the documentary a few weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it.

  • What a beautiful man. Not there for the money, glamour or fame. A true artist. Did you noticed he was always smiling?

  • lol at the orange dutchmen running there with their typical hats at 1:42! I live in a strange country... ;)

  • @TheHansonOTHfan Strange is always good.

  • loved this movie! I didn't think it would be much and I'm so glad that I saw it. Completely opened up my eyes.

  • An inspirational man with a beautiful heart :)

  • bill cunningham looks like a jackoffasaur

  • love clothes for their artistic aspect. ::)

  • Woohoo, what a great lifestyle. :) I also love

  • Jiggle the mouse! hahaha

  • Does anyone know where I can find his on the street photos in the saturday paper? I live in CA and I have a subscription to the times and I can't find his photos :(

  • Anyone know the opening song for this trailer? It's the same song that plays during his 'On the streets with Bill Cunningham' on the NY times page.

  • I loved this documentary and felt compassion and respect for this man that dedicated his entire life to something that brought him happiness. He allowed his passion for fashion to transcend his innate need for companionship and passion. A wonderful man and deserving of great recognition.

  • bill cunningham is a breathtaking photographer, the sweetest man in the photography industry, and arguably the hardest working individual who accomplished (and still is) more than the average new yorker. but its because he's all of these things why he never had experienced a relationship, sex, had alone time, or really did anything for himself. all he did was give give give, and never took took took. this has got to be one of the most charming yet inspirational documentaries i've ever seen.

  • I wanna see

  • "damn you kids."

  • Saw it yesterday! Love his work, following his website postings religiously and love the man!

  • he should visit japan...hell run out of film, with those costplayers & crazy fasion ppl lol

  • GREAT piece!!! Greater man! (saw it on ppv on demand tv today)

  • I really like this guy! Such a down to the earth guy, I follow his stuff on the Times every week. I'd love to meet the guy and just talk with him about things. Where do I find this movie??

  • @Chivalryaintdead - Netflix.

  • it's a great film! how can you not love bill?

  • To know this guy is to love him- very unassuming, always honest. At events where the BS got too thick, BC would pop up and cut right through it~ get to the the meat of the matter, by scoping and shooting the high points of the scene. ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND CONSIDERATE. Kudos to the people that found the value in him and his work enough to make this film.

  • Can someone PLEASE tell me WHERE I can watch this? Is it in theatres? DVD? I am DYING to see this film. Thanks!

  • @micalove it's On Netflix Instant

  • @micalove just watched it today from my local video store, your town should have it too, right? if not you could just buy it from online somewhere. :-)

  • @thenyc1212 her name is Iris Apfel.

  • I ran into Bill today while he was on the lookout for his latest subjects. Blue jacket and all. What an interesting man and very humble. I complimented him on his work and he replied back with a large smile upon his face "Thank you but it's not me it's the subjects that make the photos."

  • This was SUCH a phenomenal film. I laughed and cried and felt incredibly inspired.

  • @carmynjoy

Dido! The only documentary to make me feel such a range of emotions! Well said. :)

  • I have zero interested in fashion, but I kind of want to see this flick....

  • I am in love with this man after seeing this film today. Awesome film that really peeled back the layers to reveal so much about this beautiful person who happens to have a fashion obsession that will delight many viewers in itself - quirkiness in heartfelt buckets

  • If you're lucky you can even catch a glimpse of Bill roaming the streets of NY....and you'll never catch him without his camera in his hand.

  • @QueenLeilani he work for The new york times newspaper he has a column that comes out every saturday.

  • Can anyone tell me how he supports himself? He seems like such a swell guy, I would hate to think he's starving.

  • This is the only time I've seen Anna Wintour not condescend to someone when speaking about them

  • @284436 I so agree!

  • @284436 Her life is in his hands.

  • @284436 there is a special place in Hell waiting for that woman. It is filled with the reanimated corpses of all the fur bearing animals she has worn and promoted.

  • @yldchyld12 In that case we are all going to be haunted by the animals whose habitat we destroyed. By tearing down trees forrsts and grasslands to have furniture and houses, and mostly by having kids and adding to overpopulation. Thats what kills them mostly, their homes being razed. Not wearing fur or eating them. We are all just as guilty as she is. Maybe more so.

  • Bill and I tend to think alike, I'm not interested in seeing celebrities wearing their borrowed clothes. I want to see real style, not manufactured hype style. I can't start my Saturday without checking to see what Bill has snapped, plus I also love his Evening Hours photos on the NYT website.

  • @divalocity agree.

  • imm gonna see this movie
