I have heard that when the Longleaf pine was planted in Scandinavia ,i believe in Norway. They grew well and thrived just as they have done in the Southeastern USA. Despite being grown in a much cooler climate i do not know if the growth rates remained the same or not i would think that in a more northern climate the Longleaf pine would grow slower but the wood would be denser and possibly higher in Quality. While in a more southerly climate the wood would grow faster but be less dense.
So similar to the Northeastern Pine Barrens in so many ways. Fire plays a critical role in keeping the Pitch Pine the dominant species. Many cones are serotinous and only open in the heat of a fire. When fire is kept out of a forest, like it is here on Long Island, oaks start to shade out the pines.
This is the state tree of Alabama.
