This is nothing short of eloquent, moving and inspired from enjoying the last few moments of sunlight before an apocalypse. VNV never ceases to impress.
im still amazed because this was all improvised on the spot!
Ronan has sang it about three times, and he doesn't like singing it because he himself said that he doesn't like it when his music makes people sad or depressed, that isn't what a VNV concert is about.
and is it me or does he say "The darkness come, take "him" away" on the live version?
The live version from Pastperfect is way better, (IMO) Forsaken was improvised on the spot while on tour with Covenant in 98' and recorded on Solitary EP as an afterthought. I've always considered the PastPerfect version to be the base due to the quality and refined styling as VNV progressed.
if you're frightened of dying - then you're holding on - you'll see devils tearing your life away - if you've made your peace - then the devils are really angels - free again - from the earth. (vnv nation)
this song and this band mean more to me than i have ever been able to tell them, and back when manray still existed in Boston, i tried to tell them but i didnt want to come off as a fanboy, this song means so much through my life. but well a band at a club can only talk to one person so much.
The "Jacob's Ladder" sample at the end is well known, but the opening samples are from "1984" featuring a young John Hurt. This is the part of the book/movie when Winston Smith has finally been mentally beaten by Big Brother (a.k.a. The Party) and confesses his "treason".
Thanks for that. I knew I heard it somewhere. It's been ages since I've seen 1984. And while Hurt was younger, I don't know if I'd call him 'young' ;) He's always had a great, unmistakable speaking voice.
My close friend Bridgett died and this song was put on her eulogy. This song will forever make a moment of silence for me. Rest in peace Bridgett.
She went to SCAD and was a Fashion Major, was very active in the fashion community. The world lost a special person. We still dance for ya girl...Dj syn
yea, Assemblage 23, Tom, is a very powerfull lyrics writer. I wouldnt mind seeing VNV and Assemblage 23 come out with a song or 2, now that would be interesting.
This is one of his absolute best vocal performances. Shame the lyrics themselves are of such poor quality compared to pieces like Further. They devolve into complete babble at times, though that may be the point.
I don't know if you understand the story behind this particular song. If I recall correctly, his fiancé/wife (I can't recall) died. This song was probably written very soon afterwards, as songs are what Ronan turns to in order to express himself. It would make sense that the lyrics don't have that flair of philosophy, but they contain a rawness of loss that people understand come from loss; not so much intellect, as emotion.
Of course it's the point. It has to be the most emotional song I've ever heard in my life. His voice sounds way too pained to be forced. Just because they're not the most poetic lyrics doesn't mean they're not powerful.
This song was only released (in a vocal version) on a rare release called The Solitary EP, which came out back in 1998. Very hard to find these days. Great upload.
appearantly swearing is still en vogue with children... I like this song a lot though <3 I think you also get a interesting listen in his' synth's filters, I wonder if this is the Access Virus C he used so much in his first couple albums...
DAMN!!! FUCKING GREAT! sorry my bad language...but i couldn't find another way to discribe what feelings this song makes awaking in me....best band ever VNV NATION!!! i love you ronan harris!!!!
seeing this the first time he performed it live back in 2000.. it was overwhelming... Ronan cried... this song wasn't supposed to have vocals.. just one time he grabbed the mic and started singing.. everyone was like whoooaaa! NO WAY!!!
ty LHPscandinavia, didnt´t know this f******** great vocal version! And I didn´t hear a song like this since many years ago. The last 2 minutes are.... woohhhhaaaaa!!!!!!!!!
Beloved helped me through harder things than this one but some think that beloved is something like a follow up to this song. this is pain, beloved is acceptance.. they both make me cry.
This version is tough to find and I'm glad its posted. This version is to much of a downer to make my playlist but its one of m favorite songs VNV does.
i cry today at the same part, just because of my grandfather. he died 9 years ago. the day, my whole live has changed.
RIP glory big man.

I cried the first time I heard this song. Just because of the part saying;
"The day you died I lost my way.
The day you died I lost my mind."
It remembered me of my uncle who died in march this year. :'(

:S this song would be better not as a techo. the techno over rides the awesome lyrics. at some parts you can barely hear them.
but despite that, it's an awesome song ^^.

it isn't even techno

That's Synthpop and not Techno ;) I like the "Melody of this Track, it has a great symbiosis with the Voice of Ronan... It makes me melancholic ~.~

The Lyrics may be just depressing or very intense; is all up to you, as you mat receive it.
For me, it says all I want to say, from the day that 've lost something so important, that my life will never be the same.
Shame some people thinks that Ebm is just bullshit, this is a freat tune.

I already went to a couple of VNV Nation Concerts, but they never played this song Live. I think it has to much personal meaning to Ronan Harris.
