  • English professor played this and I struggled not to laugh load like an idiot

  • He is so brilliant, I LOVE the fact that he is so young and is already being studied in schools. Well done David!!! xoxoxox

  • I'm Dutch and I don't think you can hate on David Sedaris. This essay was actually spot-on, I absolutely loved it. En alle Nederlanders, hou op met zeuren, het is gewoon een geweldige essay, zie de humor er van in! Trouwens Sinterklaas en de Kerstman zijn afgeleid van dezelfde persoon. (Translation: And to all the Dutch, quit whining, it is just a great essay, recognize the humor! By the way Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus are in fact both descendants of the same person.)

    Love your work David!

  • My english teacher introduced this video to me too! Is it me or do English teachers have such an amazing since of humor!

  • i also heard it in my ap english class today!! i love it!!

  • Listened to this in my AP U.S. History class. It made my entire day.

  • This is extra nice with the YouTube Snow. Sitting by the television fire with a mug of warm cocoa and being regaled with the Story of the Spanish living former bishop of Turkey. A holiday tradition.

  • I just want to add ... ( weak adding ) the 6 to 8 black guys are white and they clime into the chimey's to drop the presents ...

really .. thats why they are black ... really .. ;) yeah really !

  • How come I'm proud of the Netherlands??

  • The Dutch Santa Claus rant is the funniest thing ever.

  • I heard this in my Acc. English class on Friday. BEST. CLASS. EVAR.

  • I 1st heard this in choir xD I love my choir director

  • @aphotog24 David Sedaris' story is not only funny, it is spot-on. Any Dutch person with half a brain and a sense of humor gets this, and believe me, my tribespeople are generally very able to laugh at themselves - the ocassional cro-magnon leftover not withstanding. "Six to Eight Black Men" should be required listening for anyone wanting to understand the Dutch.

  • Amazing, I was almost crying with laughter when I saw this earlier today. Made my day.

  • We listen to this clip every year on Sinterklaas Eve. Together with Toon Hermans' Sinterklaas... Heerlijk! I am baking speculaasjes, making a Banketstaaf and borstplaat!!

  • I am Dutch (born and raised) and I think this is the funniest thing! Well done, David Sedaris. I had tears running down my cheeks and my face hurts...GREAT STUFF! Een fijne Sinterklaasavond toegewenst!!

  • Elves are unrealistic!

  • I think you guys are missing the point of the essay. The whole idea behind it is exposing the silly intricacies behind societies. I find it funny, for example, that no one is trying to fire back against Michigan's gun laws, which are just as ridiculous.

It's the idea that some pieces of society are ludicrous. Every part of the world has their own stupid way that they do some things. He's not ripping on the Netherlands by any means, I don't think.

  • Woah, why are all the Dutch people hating on this guy? I thought it was hilarious! :D

Loved the "Elves are unrealstic" part XD

  • @Cefiay the violence in your words...no wonder the tradition of Santa and his 6 to 8 black men stuffing bad little Dutch children in a sack and then beat them appears to be wildly popular in the Netherlands. Calm down, Sedaris is a satirist...which is a type of humor...and what is so appealing about him (except apparently not by the Dutch) is that he is wonderfully able to make fun of himself...there was no slamming of your traditions, he was slamming his own ignorance and pomposity.

  • @Cefiay zwarte piet has something for you.

  • @tuberculin i know, i already got it trolled out

  • Comment removed

  • Sinterklaas and Santa Claus ARE the same . It is a proven FACT. Look into the "History of European Culture".

  • @rfsalter1 No, they are not. They are fictional characters.

  • @TheFreshBattery yeah, that's what poetje 1988 was saying. Unrealistic and fictional pretty much mean the same thing.

  • @bvvelzen shut up and enjoy the comedy, dumb loser!

  • @bvvelzen Nope, but one is at least partially derived from the other. Do yours.

  • @bvvelzen Santa Claus is a combination of different European traditions, mainly the Northern European Saint Nicholas (Dutch "Sinterklaas") and the British Father Christmas. So Sinterklaas and Santa Claus are in fact partially the same.

  • haha i heard this in my AP english class today. i found it amazingly funny XD

  • @RoboticPrism that is also how i discovered David Sedaris!

  • @RoboticPrism do you have caughey?

  • @RoboticPrism That explains why your English is terrible. Is there any reason for you to not capitalize or use punctuation with your onomatopoeia? For a person in AP English there is no excuse. Your teacher needs to do a better job, or you need to start paying attention.

  • @RoboticPrism Lol my english 3 ap teacher did exactly the same thing!! I love this video

  • @RoboticPrism as did I...

  • I love David Sedaris.. and this is especially wonderful..

  • So true!
