have a fluvall 305 that started making noise close this about 6 months after I bought it. searched online and found that using vasaline on the impeller shaft works, so I went for it and it works like I just bought the thing.
@calpicox Mine is doing the same thing and when I tried to adjust things firmly, the impeller stopped spinning. If I try to put it in too lightly then it bounces around and makes this noise. I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?
@kelly51698 Sorry for the very belated respond. In my case, I have a planted tank, which means lots of debris coming out of the melted plants. Adjusting everything -- as I suggested, won't help much, as the blades then kept nudged by the hundreds of tiny dead plants bits. So I put lots of sponge, virtually maximising the whole area of canister, therefore the incoming water that comes with that tiny stuffs are barred to reaching the blades.
My brand new one started making this sound. *Unplug and drain in bucket. Unscrew pump. Reach in and grab plastic propeller as it's part of a magnetic propeller. Inside of the pump and cord run a qtip all around. I held the pump upside down to ensure little grainails fall out. Clean off the part with the propeller. Take off the propeller. Grab a straw or compressor and blow out the inside of the magnet. Rinse only the small part and hole. I reassembled and wala.
I just took mine out of the box and set it up and it's making this friggen noise. I can't figure it out. I have a Top Fin filter that makes noise sometimes and its easy to fix by just pulling the impeller out but with this one it looks like I have to take the whole filter apart over the sink, urgh.
yup thats the sound. it is probably due to the fact that you got sand particles in the impellar. or for many i had got...manuafacture defects. some fliters that makes alot of noise have a uneven impellar magnet or the wall that the impellar sits in are uneven. when it spins the impellar knocks on the wall instead of spinning smoothly. sand particles also cause noise too.
i reccomend the aqueon power filter because the impellar is inside the tank and is quieter and has tons of water ourput. it also has built in bio filtration grid thingy. however, i do not reccomend it if u have anything over a 20 gallon tank. u sould use a canister if u have any tank over 20 gallons.
aq filters periodically make this noise. EASY FIX! bring to your sink remove impellar cover , pull impellar out (white thingy with fins) clean with small brush delicately. put light coat of vasiline. . reinstall. should not have a problem anymore. repeat with scheduled maint. as far as the media i just buy mesh baggies and wire tie the media i choose to put in. works well for me never a prob. and you'll save a ton of $, good luck AQ users!
Aqua clear just sucks, mine does that ad makes this annoying loud, high pitched, noise. My tetra is doing fine in the sand. Aqua clear can not handle sand. If you have sand; don't use aqua clear!
I bought the AC50 and it did the same thing... however, the noise completely went away after a week or two... I mean COMPLETELY gone. It's now the most quiet HOB filter I've ever had. I suspect that the impellers rub the housing a little, but after running for a while break-in.
I have the exact same problem with AquaClear 30 i've exchange 4 of them and they all make the same crazy Impeller noise ..... i can't understand who they say it's quiet when clearly it's not.
i had the exact same problem and when i took my filter apart it was covered with sand and it was the gears in the motor grinding! Spray ressure water into the spinning fan and remove as much little dirt as you can, i gurantee it will be quiet
mine does that too. if I fiddle with it, its quiet. I have found that the plastic fan on the impeller scrapes the plastic impeller cover causing the rattle. it is actually under close inspection that the impellar actually "walks" up out of the motor some and rubs. could be a motor/ magnet problem. just lift up slightlty on the media basket to raise the plastic cover. the basket snaps into the cover. pushing the basket down actually pushes the cover further down against the impeller. the lid al
I bought an aquaclear 50 for my tank that made the same noise. replaced it 3 times and at 2 different stores. I DID NOT put it together improperly or anything simple like that. after many searches for as to why this happens (i kept my 3rd one it has settled down in noise somewhat) fact is some run much quieter than others. If you want a very quiet set up don't go with a HOB set-up. spend the extra$ and buy a canister.
Wow thats stupid, aquaclears are the best filters. Sure there're really ugly, but they are really reliable. You should have replaced the filter media. It also takes time for the filter to settle in. THe noise goes away after awhiles. But oh well your loss. I would never use aquaclear 20 as the main filtration though. I would go a bit higher.
Somthing that I run into operating the aquaclear filtration units is they will slow if the media is heavly soiled or you might need to take of the magnet moter an then remove the spindle/attached magnet and give it a good rinse or better yet just give the whole unit a good wash and throw the whole unit back together with new media if the you ever get a bad jam, Although the new aqua clear model have a attached spindle which prevents jams.
Usually happens after you turn it off, you should fill it with water when it's turned off so when you turn it back on the water will flow quicker.

the rattling noise is from the LID of the filter.
Just remove the lid.
