Trigbiffy, gr8 memories here. I'd seen them on on this same tour, it was the Joshua Tree tour, summer of '87, Croke Park Dublin, still (like you) the best concert I was ever at. And bit like you I've seen them quite a few times since and while good I still 'measure' them against those 1987 concerts.
I saw them also in Dublin June '85 and I knew I'd seen something special, then two weeks later; Live Aid.
They were absolutely stunning that day!! I was stood at the front and will never forget this gig ,, watched them this year at Glastonbury they were good but not as great as 87..
I was there - still have the t-shirt - with my late husband, Dave (who died a couple of weeks after this) and my little brother. The Pretenders and The Alarm were the support acts. A great day.
this is the best concert i have ever been to. i have shivers watching it, brings back some great memories of that day. being welsh makes it even more special as cardiff arms no longer exists, sad day for welsh rugby.
back in the day i was a massive U2 fan and someone offered my dad two tickets to see them at elland road 1987 . he never bought them . said he thought i wouldnt of wanted to go !!!!!!!! i was gutted .
Also saw The Alarm at HTV studios for the Elinor program. They sang New South Wales with a choir, they stopped after and had a chat with us and signed autographs Mike Peters was a real nice guy.. Looking back i believe The Alarm were just too far ahead of their time....The Stereophonics if you like but in the 80's
The Silencers were good as well ... oh yeah the Pretenders now i remember them lol U2 who ....only joking Fantastic day...Remember seeing The Alarm flag at Live Aid toooo !!!!!!
I just watched this video and it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck...I was also at that concert taking a few crappy photos at the back... have you got any more footage I'm in Cwmbran (not that it makes much difference) but would love to see more ...don't suppose you went to the Achtung Baby one as well.Zoo tv with your camera??? I want a trabant lol
I was there too, it was amazing! Seen them live on most of their tours tho dont think any of them have come close to this. Pretenders and the Alarm supported them, amazing day
great night .i was 14 ,mum said yer not going to far lol i was in preston ,i bought a ticket 25 quid and went to see my first ever u2 show at cardiff , lol txs for posting
yeah what memories!!!! that whole joshua tree tour will never be forgotten....id been to the 2 wembley stadium shows but i was overwhelmed as it was the first time id seen em live i was too pschyed up....so me and my mates drove down to cardiff and i was able to enjoy the gig more and take it all in...we were big alarm fans and they very nearly took the honours but U2 just shaded it due to those dark atmospheric tracks like unfort fire and bad...incredible response from the welsh crowd
Damn! Went to this when I was 18! Was one of the most awesome days ever-me and my mate John McColl travelled up from Kent, and we never made it home till next day like Ian!! Remember lots of people getting pulled from the crush and stewards hopelessly dowsing overheated crowd with plastic cups of water! Happy Daze! The Alarm were brilliant this day too-unforgettable concert.
Saw U2 last night and this song just made me sob again as it always does and as it did Im sure at this gig on the JT tour in 1987!! Very very fond memories of a totally awesome day!!
First time that I saw U2 - fond memories - and I thought 15 quid was a bit steep for a ticket. Just seen them do unforgettable fire at Wembley. I think some band called the Silencers also played. At the end all the Welsh (most the crowd) pulled up bits of the sacred Arms Park Turf
I was at this gig - 20th June 87. Alarm & pretenders in support - travelled down from Liverpool (via Birmingham) - happy days - kipping in the bus shelter :0)
July 25th 1987 fuck- nearly 22 years ago. What a day. People towers, Edges piss poor attempt at kicking a rugby ball, U2 coming ou to Stand by me by Ben E King. Top gig promoting probably the best album of all time. As for the support The Alarm where superb in their home country.
never seen footage of this gig before..Thanks for posting... A brilliant day, the Alarm stole the show that day for me... great reading the comments too 'human towers' what ever happened to them!!
I went to this gig too. I seem to remember the lineup being The Silencers, Alarm, Pretenders and then U2. The thing I remember most was all the plastic bottles being thrown around by the crowd, the human towers and a sore neck as a result of having my girlfriend sat on my shoulders. A superb day out.
This was the Joshua Tree tour, it played Dublin June '87 and similar to last post, among the 2 best gigs I was ever at , that Dublin gig in '87 was one. Tune in and I'll give the 2nd best gig next time!.
I Remember the show being excellent! The alarm really set the tone for the day, no silly barriers like today. Came down from Burnley only ever been back to ninian park, but thats another storey! Ha Ha
I was at Cardiff in 87'. It was fucking ace. I'm pretty sure they started with a slow one then ripped into 'I Will Follow'. I was down the front and the place errupted, bit of moshing too, albeit friendly Welsh moshing ! ha ha
vbance, yeh I remember the Alarm too, who were fantastic. They played 'Bells of Rhymney' with everyone cheering from their respective towns n cities when Neath, Rhondda, Swansea, Newport, Cardiff etc were mentioned. It was recorded and put on the B side of 'Rain in the Summertime'. The Pretenders also played, maybe the scottish band, The Silencers were the opening act ?? Great day, I remember Tescoes closed early coz people were stealing the booze ! ha ha
saw them in leeds that year the crowed were half-sleep .drove down for this 1 .we had people towers 7 high ,80,000 ,pissed, full volume bono could of sat this one out cardiff was av;in it
the alarm were there too that day
