  • nice interview.. hahha they really do dance naked? lol

  • Great video, makes me miss the UK.

  • nice to be here

  • nice school!

  • waw

  • it entertains me..

  • then we just chundered everywhere!

  • "It was wartime when Stephen, the Hawkings’ first child, came into the world, and his mother, Isobel, had chosen an Oxford hospital for the delivery because the university town was safe from German bombing. (The German Luftwaffe agreed to spare Oxford and Cambridge if the Royal Air Force would do the same for Heidelberg and Gottingen.)"

    Oxbridge cunts.

  • Urmm.. I would love to go to Oxford because it's like the oldest university in England and it has really high level of education, just wondering is that true? Someone has anything interesting about that?

  • Compared to their reputations hundreds of years ago, today Oxford (and Cambridge for that matter) are just liberal socialist establishments that churn out people with meaningless degrees who don't seem to have intellect or common sense.

  • the asian gentleman hit the nail on the head- it's not abnormal to find fat toffs and nerdy pakistani oxbridge students considering themselves to be 'elite'.

(by the way, just to be completely clear- as dead-pan as it read- this was just "naughty comedy" too- albeit of the sit-down variety) ;)

  • @gnamp

Hmm, very droll - but there is neither a toff nor a Pakistani in that video.

  • @bigtommyg isn't that what great comedy's all about?

  • OK everyone, time to fess up. My name is Tom Greeves and that's me on the right. My friend and I were indeed undergraduates at Trinity College, Oxford.

But we have also always been rather naughty, and I am a stand-up comedian. So please take this video (which by the way is not contemporary, as so many commenters have assumed, but over a decade old!) with a BIG pinch of salt!

  • Hi, Tom,

Nice to hear from you again. I filmed you in 1997. Never thought any of my travel videos would end up on the internet, but they all did. 37 by now. Who could have predicted your popularity on YouTube back then. And all those responses.

What often seems lacking is appreciation for attempts at humor. My videos are full of nonsense. Among over 400 clips on YouTube, serious responses miss the point, as in my discussion of Norwegian Trolls.

    Dave

  • I was thinking of applying to Oxford to major in English Literature, choosing Oxford for obvious reasons.

  • oxford is shit, i got 4 A's, i applied and i got rejected by Oxford and accepted by at Cambridge! racist shits.. he couldn't take it that i balance his piss easy long ass chemical equation in 15 seconds flat. dicks!

  • @da3533 Oxford and Cambridge have always been madly in competition with each other, so much so that we're not advised to apply to both cuz there is a higher chance of being rejected due to this rivalry...

  • @da3533 However, i'd say the main reasons would be that Oxford is more strict than Cambridge, they strongly believe in keeping within the 'high society' families and the one's that av already attended their colleges previous to Uni always av a high chance of geting in before anyone else.

  • @da3533 As a result of this, there are very few 'outsiders' of Oxford education that get accepted, but only cuz there is a limit of how many students they can accept. So you might not av done enough outside education (volunteer work etc), to earn a place.

  • @PTD01 'high society' - <-- if thats the case, its rubbish. the person that interviewed me knew i was clever than him! jealousy, thats all it is. he couldn't take it that i had what he never had at my age.

  • @da3533 Okay... I suppose its possible, you know, if it wasn't against the policy of educational institutes to act upon 'jealousy'. Look, either you had it or you didn't - You Got INTO Cambridge, so what do you care? Why should you care? Seriously... Besides one of my friends sisters got into Oxford and hated it. She got bullied OUT of Oxford by her dorm mates. Why go to such a place, huh?

  • @PTD01 no but i had an opportunity to go to the best. i never went cambridge after all, i just thought it was all bullshit to be honest.

  • @da3533 Understandable. I sure hope your happy now either way though, despite being rejected from Oxford. Trust me when i say that the best is not always the place that seems to have a great reputation. Oxford is certainly not as great as its played out to be.

  • @da3533 Like i said before, the rich take care of themselves like family, but when a black sheep crops up, choas ensues. The only reason my friends sister was picked on in the first place was because she was from the north east and not london like the rest of them...

  • @da3533 When you refer to them as racist, may I know to whom are they racist?

  • NERDSSSSSSS!!

  • Thats where they did a bunch of scenes from the Harry Potter movies especially the Hogwarts scenes...

  • oh what poor elite rich bastidges. bitch and moan.

  • if you don´t like it- go away!

  • I DID! but then I had to come back and reply to your snide remark.

  • @Dogsville08 There not all rich and elite ,some of them are just intelligent ,i suppose both of which or opposites to you?

  • Do you mean THEY'RE not all rich and elite? Obviously you aren't a student there. lol

  • I'm in Hertford College reading Economics.

  • AAAAxferd lol

  • whats best out of cambridge, oxford, ICL, warwick and duhrum

  • this is a bit of a narrow question, as all of these universities you have mentioned have their different attributes, and different universities will obviously be suited to different individuals, but if you mean in terms of league tables, Oxford and Cambridge come top in most subjects they offer

  • I went to ICL and it was shit.

  • It depends on what you want to do, but overall, Oxford, closely followed by Cambridge.

  • @philluco Oxford. Didn't you watch the video?

  • @philluco oxford

  • I went there, it didn't get me anywhere in life but it sure takes me back to read embittered comments from people who didn't get in, or who can't be happy for someone who's excited about going there. It reminds me how i could never mention the university i studied at without hurting people's feelings, so i had to side-step the issue. Don't rain of their parade! well done fashionistadarling!

  • @trvbaker What did you read?

  • French and Spanish. Now I'm an English teacher in Spain. U?

  • What part?

  • An opulent and brilliant university; however, it does seem - from my experience - that many of the students are not as gifted as the prestigious title connotes. Many are in fact mundanely clever: not exceptionally clever. Universities such as UCL certainly rival Oxford in terms of academia.

  • I am studying English Literature and Philosophy

  • god "it gets quite debauched here"...they couldnt ave picked two more geeky or off putting people!

  • i applied to oxford this past fall and got in. i am starting in september. i am soooo excited! and i feel very lucky to have been accepted. i am very excited to go to college there

  • congratulations if thts true...wat r u studying?

  • haha...okay, makes me excited to attend...NOT

  • Comment removed

  • I take it you got rejected when you applied then..... Nice to see you aren't embittered in any way :D

  • I agree. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that people studying at Oxford (or any other major university) are brilliant students but when they are deemed "the intellectual elite" , they might get a bit too full of themselves. Humility is a virtue , particularly for people who are clever enough to study at Oxford

  • They were being ironic. Humour is also a virtue, you know.

  • They're just trying to say that Oxford more than a place of learning. Most of us try to enjoy ourselves, and not take things too seriously.

  • talk about a way to put people off applying

  • I finished at Oxford last summer and it's the most amazing, awesome place to study. I loved it. But watching this video is so embarrassing. They've just chosen the two most arrogant dickheads they could find. Most people are nothing like that, honest

  • ¿Is it really great? Besides having to dress like a penguin. jeje Just kidding.

It indeed must be an amazing experience.

    Congratulations.

  • They chose to talk with me and be filmed.

I had limited time and absolutely no idea what they might say.

  • Not blaming you for what they said! But what they said was embarrassing. It's just a shame that nobody nicer volunteered to help you.

  • @gologusonn Yeah I just started at Oxford - I put on 5 Kg in a week from all the 3 course meals they were serving me - going to Oxford should come with health warning!

  • Wow the thought of him naked is truly terrifying.

I'm applying for '10 entry to law, but these are exactly the kind of guys I don't want to meet when I'm there.

  • If you like this sample clip, consider watching the complete free video of Britain and Ireland, "My Pub Runneth Over". You need a broadband connection. Just ask a search engine for:

    Intrepid Berkeley Explorer

  • uni is alrite, but its rather for show than anything else, there are better uni's..trust me..

  • There are????? Name one.

    Apart from Harvard or whatever.

  • hahahahahahah

  • Im sure they're smart guys.. but not very likeable. I don't think I'd like to study with guys like these at all.... a little bit too full sure of himself that guy on the right. A smugness hiding insecurity. But then again, he's balding, mildly overweight and probably a postgrad (who didn't get in to oxford as an undergrad and worked his ass off at some reasonably ok place like leeds to right the wrong! :p).

  • this is like the united states' harvard

  • Elite my ass. You know how easy it is to get 3 A's at A-level nowadays???????????

  • but it's not easy to get into oxford.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes it is very easy to get 3 A's. However, Oxbridge entrance takes more than that - all academic grades, entrance exams, interviews, personal statement, submitted work, reference. All this is made harder by the fact that the country's best pupils are competing for a place.

  • Oxbridge takes note of percentage marks in A level scores, plus their vetting is much more rigorous...it isn't, "hey I got 3/4 As, Oxbridge will want me." You have to perform well in interview, send extra work in and have an outstanding school/college reference too. Plus at Oxford get brilliant scores on the independant exams like the ELAT, BMAT and STEP papers.

  • nobody cares about your fucking mate. fuck off

  • biggest nerds that'll be running the world.

  • There is no point inb arguing about whether UK or US universities are better. If you look at an average university in each country they are going to be around the same level.

I am currently studying in my first year at Oxford but the fact is, as all polls etc. agree and though many of my friends would be very unimpressed with my saying so, Harvard is on the whole the best university in the World. However, once you get into the top ten world universities the difference is negligible.

  • The reason that the USA has more universities in the top twenty, 12 i think someone said, is cos they have a population of 300 million but the UK only has 60 million. So if 300 million weren't to beat 60 million in number of universites in the top twenty there would be something very wrong... Of course funding plays a part as well; you would expect a university that had 35 billion (Harvard) to spend to exceed one with 3 billion (Oxford).

  • THERE IS MY DREAM!!

I want to attend Oxford University when I'm older, maybe even get PHD written before my name:P

  • oxford is expensive!

  • Not any more than any other good uni.

  • let's talk to some students!

  • Do you have to get straight As to get in?

  • more or less yh

plus all the other things they require

u dont wanna go to oxford or cambridge mate

trent uni is where its at (H)

nottingham boy all the way haha

  • who would have a 40 hour a week job and study alevels. you're destined to fail x

  • USA does have top univirsities, but oxford and cabrage are worlds best, you can get that quality of education in the states, no way, no how.

  • actually, oxford and cambridge are only at about the 5th and 6th best universities in the world: the American unis Harvard and Yale are at the very top. Google the top 50 unis - i think it's the guardian or the times website that has a list...

  • thats true, oxford and cambrdige cant match the funding the american universities get.

  • But it depends what you mean by "best". If, for example, you want more one to one attention, Oxford is definitely better. If you want better library access, and facilities generally, Harvard is certainly better. All these debates can get a bit silly...

  • i cant tell if their being serious, becuase if their charicaturing, they are geniuses

  • Just so you know Pomp and Circumstance is only played at graduations in the U.S.. No other country uses it as a graduation anthem.

  • Yes, I am quite aware of that. But being an American here was a chance to use Pomp and Circumstance for background music.

  • understandable. What do they use for graduation anthems in Europe?

  • @Richardtheincredible Wrong! here in Puerto Rico we use it too. Probably for being a colony of the US. -_-

  • I've been there :D

  • "the USA has 12 of the top 20 universities in the world whereas the UK only has a measily 4. Again, that is 20 to your lousy 4."

*raises eyebrows and looks apologetically at floor*

  • ye butno 1 likes the usa ..

  • and you yanks still can't spell. wtf is with that.

  • Yeah but the USA is about 5 times bigger than the UK population wise so obviously it has more uni's and more 'top 20' uni's.

  • the usa has like a massive population DUH !!

  • Britain has very fine schools indeed. No doubt about it.

  • eu quero estudar aiii ='(

  • kaplanuniversitystudentforums com

    Nice!

  • THES- QS university rankings:

    1st- harvard university

    2nd -University of Cambridge

    3rd- University of Oxford

    4th- Yale University

    5th - Imperial college london

Considering the U.S has around 5 times the population of England, it fails.

  • Considering that that's a British ranking that has been highly criticized, even among British entities, for being strongly biased and favoring British institutions, I wouldn't bring that up.

  • True words.

American Universities are the best in the world, No doubt, but Cambridge and Oxford are brilliant aswell.

  • The UK has plenty of great institutions. If you take a look at other rankings, the countries that have the most Top-500 colleges "per capita" are the US, the UK, and Canada. Like I said before, instead of trying to compete with each other, we should be glad our countries have, by far, the best higher education systems in the world.

  • And I see that you've conveniently forgotten to mention that the USA has 12 of the top 20 universities in the world whereas the UK only has a measily 4. Again, that is 20 to your lousy 4.

American universities are better, so much in fact that we've dominatde the THES 100 list year after year.

  • I forgot LSE. My point, however, is that there are notable British Universities other than Oxbridge. It also strikes me as a pretty mindless competition when considering the completely different teaching systems and population sizes.

  • And it is uncanny that you can gloat over British universities being "superior" to any American university when in fact, we dominate the entire THES list by far and wide margins.

Neither Oxford and Cambridge aren't even number one as they cannot compete with Harvard. Your Ivy League competition has billions of dollars in endowments, its better funded, and Harvard recruits the finest scholars from around the world than Oxbridge accomplishes.

A Harvard education on one's resume-- it pays.

  • It's also uncanny how you can put words into my mouth. My initial point was that Oxford and Cambridge aren't the only notable British Universitities. This has, of course, simply descended into the usual mudslinging. As for the LSE comparison; it hardly speaks in your favour when you have to argue such rubbish.

  • And most British universities are subsidized and the tab picked up by the government. Oxbridge has the brains, but neither the cash nor the will to compete with the Ivy League.

LSE (London School of Economics) is our equivalent to The Wharton School of Business (Univ. of Penn)

  • THES - 100.

    1.Harvard - Endowment:$35.6 Billion.

    2.Cambridge - Endowment:£4.1 Billion

    2=Yale - Endowment:$22.5 Billion

    2=Oxford - Endowment:£3.6 Billion

Can you imagine what that table would look like if Oxbridge had the same amount of money as Yale and Harvard?

    Facts:

-Cambridge has produced more Nobel Prize winners than any other universities.

-Harvard was founded by someone from the University of Cambridge.

  • The fact is, the United States as a country has produced the most Nobel Peace Prie winners. I am not talking about univeristies or schools. I am talking about its people.

Nevertheless, Cambrisge is a fine university and I trust that an Oxbridge education is equivalent to an Ivy League education.

It's just that schools like Harvard and Yale can recruit better scholars around the world than Oxbridge can do. And your American counterparts have a lot more money than their British competittion.

  • not trying to get at you but its funny since america is so war hungry (bush that is not all of its people)

  • There is nothing wrong with war as long as they are all fought in Asia, the Middle East, and in Europe where wars are meant to be fought. History has proven such.

  • Seriously, get a grip.

Oxford isn't fully of stuck-up, elitist, privately educated little pompous rich kids like people seem to think.

I should know, I hold a conditional offer and have spent a night there for interview.

    This video is SO misleading.

  • I'll thank you not to call me a "thick cunt" when I'm the one defending Oxford from the reputation of being full of posh people, while you are reducing the university to a place to "slam posh chiks".

Before you'd get any "posh chiks" you'd have to learn a grasp of English language, and politeness.

    Idiot.

  • Remind me how man foreigners are in those universities though (not saying it's any different for Oxbridge). They're hardly solely "American".

  • To oodles15: And that is exactly what makes Harvard University the best. Not to mention, it has the largest endowment of any university in the world. Having a foreign student and teaching body is beneficial, recruiting the best minds from around the world. Something in which Harvard pulls it's weight.

  • Although I do see where you're going, you have to consider that the United States is, in terms of population, five times larger than the United Kingdom. As such, it is just understandable for the US to have five times as many good universities as the UK. Why is it always US vs. UK? What really matters is that, despite whatever the rest of the world says, the US and the UK have the best post-secondary education systems in the world, with more and more prestigious colleges than any other country.

  • Consider the fact that the United States awards more bachelor degrees per capita than any other country in the world. Of that, the United States also awards more engineering degrees per capita than anywhere in the world.

The only two universities that the UK have of any importance is Oxford and Cambridge. And that's about it. The USA has a lot better universities that draws scholars, professors, and students from around the globe. We've got more money than our British counterparts as well.

  • Imperial College, St. Andrews, Durham, Kings College, University College, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh.

  • Harvard, Yale, Massachurseets Institute of Technology, Princeton, Brown, Stanford, Univ of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, California Polytech, UC of Berkeley, College of Wiolliam and Mary, Univ of Chicago, and Duke.

    So what's your point?

  • It's been around since the 1100s, which makes it about 900 years old...

  • It's actually 900 years. Who are you?????

  • I'm the American tourist with a video camera who filmed this clip in 1997. It's part of the UK/Ireland Intrepid Berkeley Explorer free, non-commercial, feature video "My Pub Runneth Over".

The interview took place because I found a pair of Oxford students who were happy to talk on camera. We all had a good time.

  • I'd love to see if there's a difference if you went back and redid this whole series now. If attitudes have changed! I was personally quite shocked that they claimed they were the elite. What an unpleasant opinion! Most Oxonians - in fact, most kind and rational people - would never claim to be the elite. It's such a difficult concept to define anyway - what are the parameters? Sorry, I'm going off track. If you ever plan on going back the UK, take another video camera with you :)

  • Beleve me when I tell you that I am so very happy that you had a "good time". All the best!

  • This is hilarious! Not everyone here at Oxford is as square as these guys. There are a few eccentrics but on the whole everyone is normal and I would say more outrageous activities occur in Oxford than most other unis

  • You bet!!!!!!!!! And I was the for many yours after leaving Eton. We are QUITE normal. Piss off!!!!

  • Is oxford as expensive as cambridge? I know they are in a constant battle of being the best university in the UK.

  • Both Cambridge and Oxford cost about the same, they are comparatevly cheap to other uni's becuase they gain rent from tenants, which lowers the school fee. Not only is the quality of teaching high but the fees are low.

  • elitist bollocks

  • is emma watson in this school ?

  • as long as she stays away from cambridge...

  • Debauched!!Yeah, yeah, id say Piers Gaviston is pretty debauched!! TEDDY HALL for life!!!

  • OXFORD!!!!!!!

  • *snickers* that was hilarious and wonderful =]

  • Is there a reason why these people are blatantly not students? You don't prance around like penguins except one day for matriculation and only ridiculous people prance and stick around for tourist photos and I'm fairly sure Cherwell did not publish that last term.

  • im applying... im not outstandingly bright... and im from yorkshire so im not upper class... but im told i have a good chance, i suppose wel wait and see

  • best of luck to you ! :)

it is also my dream to apply for oxbridge

  • Good luck to you!

  • ohhhhhhh go for it what did u get in your gcses and as levels

  • Got 9A*s and 1A in GCSEs. Doing ASlevels now- only in year 12- but have got a maths ASlevel already cos i do maths and further maths (got an A)and got an A in my English module. My other AS exams are in May/June!

  • 9 A stars mean that you are bright! Oxbridge are 'Equal Opportunities' you should not be discriminated against because of an accent, and if you are then you can contest the decision. Good Luck to you.

  • Harvard's founded by a graduand from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University and his name is John Harvard.

  • Which is top?

    Oxford or Cambridge?

  • there extremely simmilar in academinc brillience. but according to the 'good university guide' with points out of 1000 oxford is 1000 and cambridge is just 5 under with 995

  • According to widely known Academic Ranking of World Universities of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Cambridge is the 4th best university in the world whereas Oxford is tenth, which, if my math is correct, will put Cambridge above Oxford. Quite frankly, I think these lists are meaningless when it comes to this comparison, and I don't even want to talk about the discrepancies amongst the various rankings; both Oxford and Cambridge are world-class institutions with superb education programs.

  • But in the UK rankings, Oxford have beaten Cambridge year after year - check the times or the guardian rankings.

  • That's exactly what I meant when I said that "these lists are meaningless when it comes to this comparison."

I'm NOT saying that Cambridge is better than Oxford. For starters, I'm not British, and even if I were, I would not be capable of asserting such a thing. I was just pointing out that vice versa is not necessarily undisputable truth.

  • Toffs.

  • As an American unfamiliar with this one-word comment, I found a translation for "toff":

    n. Chiefly British Slang

A member of the upper classes, especially one who is elegantly dressed: "champagne, once a raffish drink suitable for toffs and weddings" Ian Jack.

  • Most of them are upper class or are extraordinarily bright. I have nothing against these people but I am neither.
