  • Wouldnt the 660 tons strain the frigin bdlg daily more than a small quake?

  • This Damper thing is nuts. If it ever broke lose the thing would go straight thru the bottom 87 floors.

  • Seriously, all these dumb ass comments.

Just look up Discovery channel on Youtube on Taipei 101, there is the full show about the building.

  • ...@xlr8up

  • @lkj17

    Like I said, troll.

  • @ohhmygod89 sdf

  • this was on how do they do it

  • That is Chuck Norris' left testicle.

  • i know this mass is 660 tons but whats the building's mass?

  • @rosafromluxemburg its a larger multiple of 660 tons in order for it to swing at a harmonic thats opposite to the buildings motion and to slowly cancel out the oscillation as it will put a huge strain on the building when its total kinetic energy has to dissipate through the elastic absorbtion of the buildings steel and concrete joints. The inertia of moving the the steel lump will absorb the vibrations at a rate which prevents fatigue of the buildings construction material.

  • @rosafromluxemburg That's a ridiculous question

  • Fuck yeah Guelph

  • @LacrimaChristi777 This tuned mass damper was designed by Motioneering Inc. (motioneering.ca) part of RWDI Inc.

  • That must be intense watching something like that.

  • LoL~!!!! bla bla bla bla bla

    fren: i know

    bla bla bla bla bla

    fren: i know

    XDDDDD

  • Walker Texas Ranger has BIGGER BALLS!!

  • This is quakeproof

  • Could you sneak into Citi Corp's damper room in Manhattan? I'd love to see that in action! Cool video, keep em coming.

  • Now that's engineering!

  • the damper is designed to withstand the building movement due to the wind....not the earthquake... :)

  • and the ball is not actually moving.

  • @JagermeisterDetox Are you blind? It's rocking like its in the ocean!

  • @xEskimoEmilyx no, i was hoping people would understand. that huge mass damper isnt moving, the building is moving around it during an earthquake.

  • @xEskimoEmilyx No xEskimoEmilyx was correct. The mass isn't moving (or at least not much). The building is moving. Its all relativity. Because they are standing in the building it looks like the mass is moving. However, if you were able to see the mass and building from a stationary object in the air then you would see the building moving back and forth and the mass saying relatively stationary.

  • 這麼恐怖

    上去看阻尼器剛好遇到地震!!!

    但也不錯

    看到阻尼器運動的過程

  • Great Engineering!

  • If those metal strings brake, the whole building would collapse cos its so heavy and so high. It is a selfdestruction demolition ball.

  • @skyfallen360 ... oh poo well I guess I will suffer with whatever comes my way because your just so right. Well until then ouch oooo yeah burnnnn... your good.

  • @skyfallen360 .. draken had a good point? Interesting. And respectable? You want me to be respectable to an individual who is an obvious racist biggot. Sorry but I could care less what you or anyone else thinks of me if I choose to add some colorful choice of words into my vocabulary. And just to let you know I did not forget YOUTUBE is international I kind of figured that out from day one, but thank you so much for reminding me of the obvious. Now I am not attacking you so please dont get crazy

  • wow....

  • Will it blend?

  • @MrJrhather Gold.

  • wow!i heard people saying earthwuake on chinese i speak chinese but don't know how to write in chinese i'm a ABC

  • very nice, amasing

  • what if it goes over slightly too far?

  • Its 730 tons.

  • its funny how many people are so quick to call real videos fake, but they can't see how obviously fake the 911 plane crash videos are!

  • @agentzippo - Heh heh...hehehe...AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAA

Are you serious bro? Unless someone installed a video screen in front of my eyes on Sept 11th, what I saw was exactly what they showed on tv.

  • @agentzippo

9-11 was not fake and those people did die on those planes and in the towers.. Please have a little more respect for them. And if you are an American have some respect for your fellow citizens.

  • @JehovahSaveUs What the hell does 9-11 have to do with an earthquake damper in Taipei 101? Jesus would you Americans forget about 9-11 and how you deserve world wide eternal pity???!!!!

  • @cptstubing/.... No need to be a jerk. If you read what I stated I was not asking for anything you said.. No need to be an inconsiderate jerk.....

  • @JehovahSaveUs You were just BEGGING to get a response like from someone. Even your god would agree with me here. Do yourself a favour, look forward, not backward.

  • @cptstubing ... You know what maybe so were you when you failed to follow your own advice. So before you decide to preach anything else, take a look in the mirror and realize your an idiot who is cold and heartless.. All I said was for that individual to have respect for the dead and his fellow citizens if he was American... So take it for what it is and move forward... and learn to read on your path to becoming human...

  • @JehovahSaveUs You were the first one to come in here preaching how 9-11 wasn't faked, and preaching to your assumed fellow Americans to respect and never forget those who died during 9-11, even though it was bound to happen and Americans are STILL surprised today that extremists are bent on sending you a box of bombs and not a box of candy. ... beyond me..

  • @cptstubing ,... seriously dude I did not say 9-11 was fake it was the idiot like yourself. Secondly who the fuck are you to say well basically we deserve to die because of the policies of our idiot government... Its fuck heads like you the reason why the world is so fucked up. you have no respect for people or life. your a piece of shit asshole who should really go back from the top read, and realize your a stupid dip shit who attacked the wrong guy you stupid fuck face bitch

  • @JehovahSaveUs I'm the reason "the world is so fucked up" ??

I'm not the one calling anyone here a "stupid fuck face bitch" or "stupid dip shit", or "stupid tard", and saying "our allies... not like you are worth anything to us (Americans)".

    Get a grip, compadre.

  • @cptstubing ... We are 2 seperate people... your the one who looks at the earth with a blind eye... at least i try to be open.. but with people like you, there is no middle ground.. you have no soul and no heart and will never see reason.... so you know what talk all the shit you want because I am done with fighting with trash like yourself.. pray to whatever you believe that they give you a heart you SOB./.. oh and GOD BLESS AMERICA ASSHOLE!!!!!

  • @JehovahSaveUs No, we're the same. That is your first problem, you classify people into groups, you divide... and not unify.

Trust me, we are the same. you just get angry easily. To me, you have no middle ground, you just resort to a violent mouth, because you can't even articulate your thoughts well enough to argue properly.

Pray for youself, you need it more.

  • @cptstubing.. your right I did say it was not fake because it was not.. it was in response to someone else's comment you stupid tard that I asked for a little respect.. What country are you from, hopefully not one of our allies... Not lik you all are worth anything to us anyway's...e

  • @JehovahSaveUs good to see u give a crap about the rest of the world....only reason u have allies is cause u got bombs

  • @tbreen09ify ... your right.. please continue on like the idiot before.. ramble ramble blah blah.. what else.??? right aww like I care.... thanks a whole bunch for your 2 cents because you just made the world so much better... yayyy

  • @JehovahSaveUs Lmao!!! Your name is JehovahSaveUs? That must be a joke or mockery name with the bad mouth you have lol.

  • @PZCherokee.. And who the fuck are you to judge me??? Oh that's right another sinner... besides maybe I am working for the other team and this is just a way to get idiots to hate religion even more.. who knows.. either way, I really don't care about my "bad mouth", especially when stupid fucks have thier shit all twisted.. wow there goes my "bad mouth" again huh?? shoot maybe I will pray a little harder for my father to help me with that...

  • @JehovahSaveUs LMAOOO!! Oh my!!

  • @PZCherokee ,, Look fool.. Im not a bad person.. I cherish everyone no matter where we come from.. we are al in this together... seriously look back at what I orignally posted and judge me from that.... I love everyone because even no matter how much I may hate what others say,,, we are ALL brothers and sisters,,,

  • @JehovahSaveUs See how nice that was? I'm no fool either :)

  • @JehovahSaveUs #LOL "look fool...Im not a bad person...I cherish everyone"

    excellent way to contradict yourself

  • @drakeneyez .. OMG CAN YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GET OVER IT??? Jesus that was like so long ago and your still stuck on that shit. Get a life you stupid bitch.. Seriously think of something else..

  • @JehovahSaveUs #LOL, a week is a long time to a person like you, unemployed, uneducated, virgin, and you're telling me to get over it? it's my first comment you shit4brains

  • @drakeneyez .. Right cause you live with me huh... seriously just shut the fuck up,, you want the last word fine you got it you win you stupid bitch, now just shut up.. okay YOU WIN.. Please seriously just accept your win and go along with your life and try to find something productive.. FUCK, shit it's like what, you have nothing better to do.. stupid!!

  • @JehovahSaveUs #LOL listen cockbreath, if you take the time out of your busy day you'll see that right below your name is clearly posted how long ago you or that other person posted the comment. Retard. Go take your ritalin emo vampire fag.

  • @drakeneyez .. you don't get it do you.. the subject is done. Over. You won you stupid bitch okay.. do you understand that.. Now since you seem to have issues with understanding let me help you. I will from this point forward not respond back to you because you don't seem to comprehend get the fuck over it.. so I will let you win just to keep the peace and so you can just shut the fuck up..

  • @JehovahSaveUs the subject is done and you keep replying back? for fucks sake how retarded are you? I mean, seriously. Were you abandoned in a trash can as a slithering little freak of nature or something?

  • please for oher peopl ewho make this kind of video: try to let more than 1 sec the camera fixed in one point, and do not move it... here it's really hard to see the ball moving because the camera do not stop moving too...

    anyway, that is impressive.

  • @docsharp00 it might have been difficult with the earthquake happening.. unless he could have mounted it firmly against a wall, railing, something.. but not always possible. When you're that high up during an earthquake, the building doesn't shake much, just sway slowly back and forth as much as 10 metres probably.

i agree though, hard to tell what is moving sometimes, the cam or the ball.

  • i have been there, i am half from taiwan

  • @nycitygirl100 How are you HALF from Taiwan???

Was top or bottom half born somewhere else??

  • Comment removed

  • @vaibhavd85 That thing was more then 500 tonnes , you call that fake?

  • @vaibhavd85 Google may 12 2008, at least google it... there was a earthquake that day that killed 80 000 people. How can you say it's fake? There was no tremor only because the earthquake was thousands of miles away.

  • China wishes they could have one.

  • It's awesome ::))

  • i see that the people not panic right..??

mybe they normal with the earthquake.....

    good luck taipei 101..

    from malaysia.

  • yeah... that stables the building.

  • on the history channel they said it was 720 tons in the show "Life after

    People"

  • whoa and that's from the earthquake in 四川!?

holy crap! I went to Taipei 101 and saw this a couple months ago. Interesting to see the damper in action - thanks for uploading!

  • For the record its 730 Tons not 660 !!!!

  • it's 660 metric tons.

  • It's both actually depending on what type of tons you are using. 660 metric tons, 730 short tons. It's really confusing. No need to argue.

  • why isn't Taipei 101 in the guinness world record book?

  • it is in one of them.... but it is no longer the tallest

  • cool

  • That is ingenious engineering . . . the ball's inertia and the way it is hung freely means that it stays mostly steady when the building sways around it, and the pistons on the bottom transfer the force in the opposite direction of the movement to the building to stabilize it . . . gotta hand it to the Taiwanese! :D

  • It was designed by two companies from the US, not from Taiwan, look it up

  • It was actually a Canadian Company called Motioneering, which now is a part of RWDI, located in Guelph Ontario.

    Look it up.

  • @jding19711 designed by a foreign consultancy

  • @jding19711 The concept of mass dampers was not invented or even designed by anyone in asia! The concept of the Tuned Mass Damper was invented in the US by Hermann Frahm (US Patent #989958, issued in. 1911)

This particular mass damper was designed by a canadian company.

It is an amazing use of engineering!

  • @ohhmygod89 fake~

Taipei101 is designed by taiwanese and built by one japanese company and three taiwanese companys

  • @ohhmygod89 designed and produced by Taiwanese. Look up discovery channel and see for yourself.

  • @shuan3 why don't you say designed by Engineer? you speech is discriminary

  • Comment removed

  • @shuan3 Taipei 101

    Architect: C.Y. Lee, country: Taiwan

Structural Engineer: Thornton Tomasetti, country: USA

  • @ohhmygod89

Designed by american? It's fine, whatever you like... But built by korean? You dumb ass!! Taiwanese hate korean, they just don't let korean build crap or get any hand job in their land!

  • @M3G4SP0T lol u fucking idiot white boys . I'm not Chinese and will never be. How about saying this shit in person ? Such a loser for talking shit behind the screen =) fuck up.

  • Comment removed

  • @ohhmygod89 excuse me? im not white. IM TAIWANESE AND IM PROUD OF IT

  • @M3G4SP0T shut up no one wants to hear ur annoying mouth

  • Scaaryyyyyy!!!

  • haha- @:35 "thats not good." " i know" "thats not goood!" "i knooow!"

  • I'm surprised that nobody was screaming or crying, I guess you just get used to earthquakes.

was there anyway to tell how much the building itself moved? The TRI Towers by my house swayed about a foot during a small earthquake.

  • Felt the building moved. But the view on the streets looked normal. Cars/people looked normal... therefore we were less panicky.

  • @phuaalvin they also said the ball is used for high winds

  • @phuaalvin 101 is rated better than nuclear power stations for earthquake safety in the area, nothing to worry about

  • @calvinthedestroyer i didn't scream or yell when a earthquake occured. i just stayed quiet and calm

  • @calvinthedestroyer wind caused the movement

  • @calvinthedestroyer theyre buildings dont crash theyre earthquake proof so i dont think they would be scared it would just sway, damn japanese are smart

  • Taiwan had an earthquake this sat. 12/19/09. I wondered how it fared.

  • For those who don't know, this ball weighs as heavy as:

    907 african elephants

    5 blue whales

    10 M1-Abrams US tanks

    7,260 200 pound people

  • 101 is such an amazing place

i love the shops in there!!!!!

    I luv Taiwan!

  • Fascinating!

The only footage of a mass damper in action that I have seen.

  • That is pretty scary! Did you feel the building move at all?

  • amazing man...and dangerous too..when i'm been there...it wasen't moving

  • 660 tons if for some reason the ropes broke goodbie tower lol

  • martintod2006, yours is probably one of the worst and most ignorant comments ever. your language is not only disturbed, but an inappropriate use of the word 'fuck'!!!

  • ethiopian09 this is not a shit technique the reason why the burj dubai doesn't require one of these is because dubai is an area of low siesmic activity and therfore only requires to be able to withstand wind. The Taipei 101 has to cope with both high winds and earthquakes so this is the perfect engineering to keep it upright and being able to be resistant to earthquake effects especially those induced by Love & Rayleigh Waves.

  • @ethiopian09

You can't understand man, africa is so fucking poor that the tallest building have only two floors, all u have are ants and stones to eat lol. Run Forest run...

  • @ethiopian09 I would like to hear you say that when stood in a swaying building with no damper ;)

  • Me gustaria estar alli, debe ser increible...

  • 太強了.第一看到大球會動

  • Shibby shibby....

Like a Tamiya suspension damper on the 70's buggies they made....low and slow and full of suspension oil.

    Those who know know.....

    Pretty scary post...rock on.

  • that looks like it is swaying dangerously fast. once that bal gets going, im pretty sure it would be hard to stop. as bill bye would say: "inertia is a property of matter!"

  • it's attached at the bottom to dampers that act as shock absorbers and absorb the energy of the moving ball... all this is 'tuned' to the buildings natural sway.

  • wtf

  • on you

  • But does it tell the time?

  • @2005kanda AhAHHHAHAHahhaa

    it actually does though..

  • damn this must be SCARY!!

  • I watch the documentary of the construction of taipei 101 and i also research and i found out that taipei 101 is design to withstand strong winds up to 60 m/s (197 ft/s, 216 km/h) which is equivalent only to a category 4 typhoon... the question is how about if a category 5 a super typhoon which has a wind power of more than 155mph or 249km/hr can still the 101 tower stand on it?

  • Maybe man, maybe

  • The answer is probably, but I'd prefer not to be there at the time.

  • Yup. Sure will. I was in Taiwan 3 years ago in a typhoon that clocked 167mph winds. No problems at Taipei 101. In fact, I drove by it the next day when the winds "died" down to under 100mph, with the hopes that the building would be open and I could watch the damper move. Unfortunately, the building was closed, as were most of the businesses.

  • I don't understand the video? Does that ball amortise the earthquake in the building or what?

  • damn right

  • THe pendulam is designed to sway in the opposite direction to the sway of the tower, holdng it back.

  • Oh My God ! Earthquake !!

  • Great video!

  • next time when it moves - get out!

  • Wow you have never ever studied engineering before have you.

with that thing moving they are save as could be.

  • It's interesting how this works. The ball is so heavy and is such a dead weight near the top of the tower, it actually reduces the swaying movements of the tower during high winds.

  • now that is what you call extremely clever engineering, you shud watch richard hammond's engineering connections taipei 101 it is really interesting and when this building was being constructed a devastatin earthquake struk and the building still stood tall and unharmed afterwards , that was half way through construction, the damper keeps the building from swayin to much and givin people motion sikness, soz just thought id share mygeeky knowledge

  • actually, when the ball moves it stops the entire building from moving as much by being moved by pistons in the direction to counter the movement.

  • No, the pistons are just holding up the thing...

  • The cables are what supports the ball. What you're referring to as pistons are dampers that translate forces to the tower structure in the opposite direction of movement in order to stabilize it.

  • just a HEADSUP!!!................∑8}..........

  • I WILL T¤M¤RR¤W!

  • Could Godzilla play pingpong with that ball?

  • @khunopie lol

  • Did the building move too?

  • that's exactly what this is about, the ball is to stabalize the building. the building is acutally moving AROUND the ball, ofcourse the ball is moving too, to keep it more stable.

  • That's scary...

  • now only i found this video..a little bit late..but cool man..u are great..able to took this,,

i have been here during the chinese new year..and i dun even see a single inch movement of the damper..

and this video shows it is moving more than few inches..horrible..

if i was there..i would look at it .and said omg!!!

sichuan earthquake..at taipei oso can felt the quake movement..how disastrous is this earthquake..may god bless those who passed away..sad

  • WHAT DO U THINK?

  • lol!

  • EXACTLY lol

i just played the scary maze game so im like tryin 2 catch up 2 my heart!
