American football cannot be compared to soccer, they are different games. 'Gridiron football' modern ruleset originated at harvard in the late 1800's, when association football and rugby football were in there infancy. The reason it carries the name football is because it reminded people of association football and rugby football as it borrowed some concepts. It was intended to be a new sport and people enjoyed it. Contrary to popular belief, american 'GRIDIRON' football is very strategic.
