What is Dune about? It is about everything; life, relgion, death, consciousness, sub consciousness, time, space, morality, evolution, and so much more. It is about life right down to the worms. Most of all it is about a war for a limited resource in a desert setting, a resource essential for transportation. It is about a bunch of desert people who wage a jihad against western powers, and win by using nukes, Dune is a prediction, we are seeing it happen in our time.
Dune is fantastic. I never really considered myself a reader, but after hearing about it on the net I researched a lot about it, specifically how it inspired my favorite childhood movie series, Star Wars. After reading the book I know quote the Bene Gesserit quote every time I'm confronted with something about me or my surroundings that makes me uncomfortable.
if i was a multi billionaire id give a dune remake an avatar beating budget and give David lynch the chance to do what he wanted to do with total freedom. holding back a visionaries mind is a disgrace which is what happened to dune. but i think there are enough smart fans out there who see what it could have been not what it was. i just hope if there is a remake it wont be a waste.
@marsneedstowels I get what you're saying,; it's hard for non-Dune readers to get even the slightest idea of what the heck is going on, but I am a HUGE fan of both Herbert & Lynch who stayed (obsessively perhaps) assiduously close to the source material. THANK HEAVENS - he didn't butcher it. i quote passages from the book along w/Paul, Pieter the Mentat,Leto et al. Herbert created the most incredile universe and is very scientific but in a way that's not too didactic. :Long live Arrakis!
David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning
The Original movie's art design was true to Herbert's vision and was beautifully shot but the mini-series' script was far more faithful to the source material. If only they could merge into the ultimate Dune experience in IMAX.... 3D... Directed by Darren Aronofsky with music by Toto, Brian Eno and Brian Tyler ala Children of Dune.
Marvelous tribute, i love it, the fan who made it make Frank Herbert still alive. I hope this video signal will go far in space and join the energy of a planet and create is first rain drop.
I am a TOTAL Dunie...........both the 6 books and movie were total Masterpieces.I am well read and cultured.............I can think of only one other 20th century artist that has touched me more and that is Gabriel García Márquez!!! Hemingway and star wars are mediocre...
Volgan, you are correct, its a great film there is nothing else like it...the acting, the music, the mystery, the lyrics, its one of a kind - amazing stuff
Despite the new Dune series effects being more 'advanced' technology wise, this one looks far better. Especially the worms. The casting and costumes for this are awesome, nearly as perfect as you could get. The new one is badly cast (fat Stilgar WTF??)and the costumes are sloppily done, looking like redyed period drama pieces then original costumes.
However good or bad this movie might be, I doubt one will forget it after seeing it. In this world of dime-a-dozen movies, that has to count for something.
I'm starting to appreaciate this movie more and more. I think you've captured the best parts and best music from the movie. My fav part is when they arrive at the planet Arrakis. I love that score.
There was indeed a lot right and wrong with this movie, but it wasn't as bad as the writers below believe. It tried to capture the essence of the extraordinary books and to some extent, at least in terms of style, I think it succeeded. Personally I (almost) loved it, though the books really are something else.
This movie is nothing more than David Lynch's ego projected on film than an actual adaptation of my favorite novel, he totally raped it. Just bizarre stuff, grotesque images like nipples getting ripped out from heart plugs and other sleazy stuff from Lynch's mind than Herbert's. I'm glad it flopped at the box-office and got bad reviews even from fans like myself, he was the wrong man for such a project.
It's hard to talk about this movie when you watch it AFTER reading the book. Maybe they should have tried to make a trilogy with it, not a single movie? A trilogy that became a hard competitor for SW? Or maybe they should try to remake it? It's hard to talk about it, definitely.
@Votapardo Even given an expanded treatment (like the 2000 mini-series), I doubt Dune could ever compete with the popularity of Star Wars... the latter being more accessible, and greatly simplified by comparison. Would Joe Average want to make the effort to take in this rich, detailed world Herbert created? A story of cut-and-dried good, evil, and lightsabers is probably going to be more digestible, and sell more tickets/copies.
@Votapardo There were certainly some adventurous films made in that decade... one wonders how an Alejandro Jodorowski version of Dune might have turned out had they gone through with it.
Duke Leto: A person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside... a longing to grow. Without change, something sleeps inside us... and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken!
Translation: Travel is good for your health. I've never had such a good night's sleep as I had on Arrakis. I think it's the climate.
A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that is is the year 10191. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the Fourth, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange.
Lynch had his hands really tied on this film. That's why he hates it. Eno should have done the whole soundtrack, not Toto. This movie had some good atmosphere, and it couldn't have been done without Lynch.
It's a pity the movie remains so unappreciated. It had almost everything one could ask for, great actors, a imaginative sets and effects, a timeless soundtrack and best of all, a script that was not dumbed down to reach casual moviegoers. Movies have become much more commercialized sice 1984 and Dune will remain one of the few true science fiction classics.
Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
The thing I hate most about David Lynch's interpretation of Dune was making the "Weirding Way" based on a voice box.
.
WW relied heavily on Bene Gesserit command of Voice and knowledge of the limitations of human perception, misdirection and Prana-Bindu training. It was "Magic" by the uninitiated. The physical aspects of this system seem to rely heavily on physical techniques using strikes, especially balland "knife edge" of the foot kicks to the throat, temple neck.
For me it is the best movie, OST and book ever!!!
It is just perfect :)
The only thing that makes me sad is that David never was allowed to finish his 4 hour version, which he actually directed. Only in the end rafaela de laurentiis made him make this short version, and thus cripeled his vision... I am still sayng that this is the best movie ever, but it colud'ew bin much beter!
hmm i googled "peter burg dune" and some news-site stated that he is no longer involved and that paramount are looking for another suitable director.
well, it´s not very likely going to be a good movie anyway. there´s just too much background information requiered to display the subtleties of the story. unlike for example "lord of the rings" where you can leave aside a lot of the 3000 years backstory and still be left with a good vs. evil plot that anybody can grasp.
but i´m still looking forward to it. the old dune movie had a lots of faults but i still like it very much and i hope (if there ever is a new movie) they´ll keep some of the baroque 19th century-ish look of the 1984 movie, which imho fit really well with a society some 20000 from now where computers are banned and all that :)
I agree with you on your observation. So many movies are being remade by Hollywood that nothing is sacred. When I made my original comment I should have indicated that I wanted David Lynch to a movie in a similar vein because he is so talented. I doubt that a new Dune movie will be any good and will probably be a lot of action and special effects because the story is too dense for the current audience to grasp....sigh....where have all the good movies gone.......
Some movies you grew up with or your faves could be remakes like Scarface for example, Ben-Hur, The Thing, Heat and more. Remakes have been around since the 30's even Maltese Falcon was a remake.
Dune is such a complex story, what about the empire after paul, the worm god leto, there is enough for a lengthy tv series, maybe in the same style as galactica, I found the appendix of the book as interesting as the story, the fremen as an oppressed race, Liet/ Kynes, Agamemnon and his titans, the swordmasters in the jihad...there is a lot of detail...as much as tolkien if not more...huge project..I would definitley watch.
Also, a short "intro scene" should accompany the start of the film, just like in the Fellowship of the Ring. It succinctly and very awesomely gave the backstory on Sauron and the Ring of Power without getting bogged down or becoming confusing. A similar set of scenes could be done in Dune, with some narrator (Irulan?) detailing how man revolted against thinking machines (showing battle scenes) and the start of the Guild, Imperium, and Bene Gesserit.
Yeah, I know what you are talking about, but what I am envisioning is definitely something akin to the intro of The Fellowship of the Ring movie, i.e. actual filmed scenes of the past Butlerian Jihad, foundation of the Imperium, and the start of the feud between House Atredies and House Harkonnen. In comparison, those stills for the Alan Smithee version can only be....bleh.
This movie is great, but I did see it right BEFORE I read the book, so I can be fair and see its shortcomings, as well as agree a remake of the film is totally possible and a GREAT idea. A Peter Jackson LOTR-style treatment must be used, even though this is one book. I'd recommend splitting the book into two movies in order to do it right (like Jackson's Hobbit). This also works as the novel itself is split into three "books".
I enjoyed this movie, but it wasn't very good. He spent far too much time on the part before he joins the Fremen. That part, as I recall takes up only a third of the book, or less, and he takes up half the movie with it. As a result he ends up having only the vingnettes of Paul coming up the ranks in the Fremen, and it makes very little sense.
Yeah, apparently only the critics thought Dune was bad as far as I can tell, and the ones that hought it was bad and aren't I guess would have rather seen some overly-bloated FX soaked piece of crap that is the norm of today. The cast, the music, and the over-all look of this film is nearly unparalleled. There's never been another sci-fi film like this one, and chances are never will be again.
David lynch shoud make a dune DVD like Ridley scott did with blade runner. 6 DVDs or so. All cuts, the theaterical cut, the workprint, the mini-series, the smithee cut, a new version by Lynch all restored with new cgi effects but also the originals thrown in for measure, commentaries by director/producer/writers/actors for the shorter cuts and rotating comentaries for the longer cuts. restoration doco, doco about the film, rare vintage feturettes, behind the scenes, make up tests, effects, etc..
Fat chance! Lynch hates this movie as he disowned it for he refuses to speak of it or would walk out if Dune is ever mentioned for it was a big painful memory for him. It taught him and Hollywood a lesson, NEVER EVER hire David Lynch for a big budget movie for he will screw it up.
Any film maker taking on this project is taking on the same challenge as filming Lord of the Rings or even The Bible. Such is the scope and the scale. However even if you only get it half right (and chances are that is best you could hope for) then the quality of the source material is such that you will have an darn good movie at the very least. This is the case with the David Lynch film. I'm going to watch it again now!
I've read Dune and I'm reading dune messiah now, and just really don't understand people who hate this film - I think it's awesome! Also, the children of dune miniseries is one of my favourite movie/series.
Often times when people dislike a movie but liked the book it was changes made from the book which can cause the disliking of the movie. In the film version here, Duncan Idaho dies where in the book he not only survives but plays a part in the later stories. The rain at the end of the movie was certainly not in the book.
Still when making books into movies the different medium may require modification and/or editting of the material for the film.
Im glad this movie came out. I know many Dune novel fans hate it, but if it weren't for the movies or miniseries i would have never gotten into the novels. These movies sparked my interests in the Saga of Dune.
If I was the richest man in the world, I would make a deal with David Lynch: do all Dune in movies, whatever it takes. In exchange, I would fund the production of Johnny Rocket...
this movie is quite good in its age, but if you didnt read book, you wont understand many things, for example: what is alia doing with knife at the end. Many things is imaginary, the most ridiculous is emperor operating with defence tower.
very nice, finally someone who made a good tribute with just the right lines..."without change something sleeps inside us and seldom awakens..." this movie always has been highly inspiring to my life!

Althman 2 years ago
@Althman They sort of did this for the Alan Smithee TV version. It was a set animated stills.
silencer303 2 years ago
Yeah, I know what you are talking about, but what I am envisioning is definitely something akin to the intro of The Fellowship of the Ring movie, i.e. actual filmed scenes of the past Butlerian Jihad, foundation of the Imperium, and the start of the feud between House Atredies and House Harkonnen. In comparison, those stills for the Alan Smithee version can only be....bleh.
Althman 2 years ago
@Althman Yeah that would have been a nice introduction. You never know they could have filmed some of that but it didn't make the cut.
I like the speech by Princess Irulan though, I think its in the character of the book.
I'd like to see another attempt at a proper cut for the film. I really like the actors and atmosphere made for this film.
But I believe David Lynch has no interest in it whatsoever.
silencer303 2 years ago
Enter Pierre Morel, who is supposedly directing the remake of the film. Can't wait to see how that turns out (if at all...).
Althman 2 years ago

Why don't you read the book and you'll realized this movie is a turd..

DUNE remake is overdue. If ever produced, I hope they start with the Machine Crusade novel plot. I will even volunteer to play Duncan Idaho! ;-P

I don't know why, but Lynch hates this film.

if you want all these things, why don´t you make a movie by yourself?
someone has to pay that. did you forget that ridley scott is bankrupt? i guess he put too many extras on is dvd´s.

Fat chance! Lynch hates this movie as he disowned it for he refuses to speak of it or would walk out if Dune is ever mentioned for it was a big painful memory for him. It taught him and Hollywood a lesson, NEVER EVER hire David Lynch for a big budget movie for he will screw it up.

Nice! I absolutely love this film! Together with Blade Runner they are my favorites.

Internetizen02 2 years ago
Duncan dies in the book as well...but comes back as a Tleilaxu ghola named Hayt. (I know ...score 3,000 nerd points :-P )

500 additional bonus nerd points if you can name where he died twice. And please no picking up your dune books.

I read the book after I saw lynch's movie.
Honestly I think it was better that way.
The confusion made it interesting, lots of suprises and interesting things. Kept you thinking.
(like many of Lynch's films)
I saw this when I was young and it burned itself into my brain.

this movie is quite good in its age, but if you didnt read book, you wont understand many things, for example: what is alia doing with knife at the end. Many things is imaginary, the most ridiculous is emperor operating with defence tower.
