  • This video is recorded by SRAM, click on the poster's link to find out...

  • that's what gives to shimano the soft of his components

  • Lucky bastard. All I have is a Shimano Tourney and this is shit.

  • I have an X5 on one bike and SLX w XT RD on the other and I always prefer the crisp shifting of the X5.

  • @youhenyo Im considering a new giant talon 29er, is the X5 durable? will it handle rough terrain with quick shifting? personally i had two shimanos that never did the job right :(

  • OK, tenía mis dudas con que grupo iba a equipar mi bicicleta, pero creo que apostaré por SRAM X.5...

  • man,,,in coclusion,,,,i mean,in my opinion, everyone thinks like that:``if i have shimano on my bike,i will like forever shimano, and reverse with Sram,or if my first bike is equiped with Sram ,i will love it forever.I think all of us should be a little bit more friendly winth the both parts=))

  • are the deore shadow is the same as x5 in movement?

  • Comment removed

  • ppl say- I broke 2-3 (your number) X.5 or Deores- what exactly did u break?

  • Come to think of it I've been riding with a deore derailleur for about 3 years now and I've never cared about it bouncing around, it does but I honestly can't think of a time where that has actually had an effect on my riding.

If it ever breaks or stops working well I'll take it into consideration but if it doesn’t effect my riding it doesn't bother me.

  • cool video. very helpful

  • i have deore shadow and its very good

  • I broke two X.5 ... Since then i bought all transmission parts shimano deore and i have no problems at all right now!

  • Shimano..es mejor...

  • sram is more reliable for me...

  • i still prefer the deore over that x5............

  • PASEN LA VOZ, NO COMPREN EN JASCO PARTES DE BICI, YA QUE TE PARAN ESTAFANDO, ME AN ECHO IR POR PARTES MAS DE UNA VEZ, Y EN LO QUE VA, YA ME ARTE, ES UNA ESTAFA, TE DICEN VIENE TODO EL JUEGO Y A LA HORA QUE VIENE, TE DICEN NO ES POR PARTES, ME E GASTADO CASI 1 000 DOLARES EN UNOS AROS SHIMANO, EL JUEGO COMPLETO Y AHORA QUE LO ESTOY ARMANDO NO VINO TODO

  • The only thing bad about SRAM is that in many slavic languages it means "shame/disgrace" lol :D

  • @VictorSobakus LOL, I did not notice that and it is on Serbian as well same meaning SRAM=SHAME :)

But on other hand pronounce of SCOTT bike is something as BASTARD :)

  • Comment removed

  • @tramvaj12 In Polish it means "I shit". And that is probably why you cannot find it on new bikes.

  • SRAM FTW the only reason People say shimano ftw is cuz it's cheaper and the only shimano product I would use is saint but SRAM is better

  • Shimano FTW

  • Jedite govna majke vam ga nabijem :)

  • I do not ride on these roads

  • Disc brakes are stupid

  • At first I watched this video and thought "Wow SRAM FTW"

But then I looked back at my experience. I had a Deore on my old bike for many many years. PERFECT shifts every time.

I've had a X5 on my current bike. It occasionally slipped between 5th and 6th. After having it a whole 2 months it snapped.

Then I see another commenter here has had 2 snap on him.

Then I see you're running the Deore in highest gear (lots of chain slack) & SRAM in medium gear (less chain slack)

    Shiz video, BS conclusion

  • Thank you for this awesome video!

  • this is a comparison of absolutely nothing. move along.

  • uhhh who cares.. if you love to ride then just ride and stop comparing about which parts are better. Its all about the rider not the bike.

  • i liked the part where the doohickey moved about! i hate it when my doohickey moves about so the sram gets a big old double thumbs up from me yay!

  • Yeah i use shimano and i am really impressed of it accualy it works perfect...and my opinion is that the shimano is better becouse it absorbes the inpacts and with that u gain more live...my friend use sram and yes they are preatty good but they got less life than shimanos...

  • I've ridden with both , the shimano with in a few days of use was battered and bruised to the point where i had three gears that i could use on my back cluster ,the sram is still working like the day i got it .

the shimano managed to chip the pain on my bike it bounced so much.

  • Lance rides SRAM on both MTB and Road enough said...SRAM wins

  • @martino0626 But he won 7 tour de France on Shimano, and lost the last two where he rode on SRAM.

This just doesn't prove anything anyway, Lance didn't choose to ride on SRAM or Shimano, they just sponsored his team at that time.

  • Thia video is and one who made it a bunch of bollocks!!!!

  • have you heard sth aboud shimano shadow? ;)

  • deore moves because it has more movible parts and that absorb impacts.

    i already broke two X.5

  • 15 people ride shimano

  • ive got both and i have more problems with the shimano

  • chain 2 long? maybe have a tinkle with the single top screw.

  • the chain is moving the samo by both derailleurs !!!!!

  • Sramcakes

  • @jaso0n1986

sram don't have high end parts? Have you seen what they charge for x-0?????

  • There are many reasons why Shimano are better, but just use what you like and enjoy!

  • This is a very interesting comparison video. I use SRAM, but my husband uses Shimano. His shimano has been tough as nails. My SRAM is a bit more fickle, then again I also ride differently than he does.

  • man, before I do this test I thought shimano one is performing worse than competing components, but it is not, I'm the national champion of Triathlon and xc Romania. I have tried the shimano and SRAM at all competitons where I was. clear.shimano and is far beyond SRAM company. Plus, a competitor needs responsive shifting, not a non moving shifter.in this comment I said about shimano and SRAM my opinion ...... if you're a real rider then try shimano ..... ............

  • @RiderPro12 Felicitari! Si pe mine ma pasioneaza ciclismul, deci stiu ca e si distractiv si greu. Respect!

  • i got yout f*ckin tricks here!.. the shimano deore geear placed at high gear so the chain was long and make a high movement. and the sram place at low gear so the chain was long and was tigh to make big movement.. damn to those agree that sram is greater than shimano.. shimano deore is the best part...

  • @matind21 you have to go to check your eyes

  • i got yout f*ckin tricks here!.. the shimano deore geear placed at high gear so the chain was long and make a high movement. and the sram place at low gear so the chain was long and was tigh to make big movement.. damn to those agree that sram is greater than shimano.. shimano deore is the best part...

  • My Sram X-5 is the first derailleur to ever slip and slip a lot.

I've tried to repair it 2x already and its still slipping.

  • the point of this video is to show that shimano is moving more than sram? Lawl in mountain biking you would wreck that sram ...

  • i hadto put foam padding on my basic deore because it bangs quite hard on the chainstay.

and i hadto service the pulleys pretty fast after buying about 300km, they started to make alot noise and when i opened them they were completely dry and had dust inside

other than that it works for now, ill get something stiffer next time for sure these came with the bike

  • Shimano Deore suxx SRAM rulzz)

  • @sswwrrable i agree sram has great products but you cant rule out shimano they have super good products as well just not the deore line. i have sram on some of my bikes and i have shimano on some of my bike as well. their all really good componets. and ive had no problem with either. i always say you dont like the products shut up and buy something that is stronger and will last longer. if you cant afford it dont complain.

  • are u sure? x5?

cuz mine is silver.. and i had no problems yet.. hard dirt and freeride

  • TRY THE NEW SHIMANO DEORE SHADOW

  • @jimmybtt94 yeah man!the new shadow deore is juz the same as the xt!amazing!plus its way better than the deore in this vid!

  • sram's wear out alot faster tho beacuse where do you think the energy is going to go? right to the drop out and they bend alot faster, shimano allll the way.

  • This video helped me decide what mtn bike to get. I always was a shimano fan having used everything but XT and XTR. From just looking at a bike in a shop, Shimano derailliurs look more durable and nicer. After seeing this video however, it's obvious ! I'd like to see X-9 against SLX or XT even ? But if X-5 works that well, X-7 , X-9, X-0, and X-X must be superbe ! When I get my next Mtn bike I'll try X-7 in fron, X-9 in back and X-7 shifters. Probably a Trek or Gary Fisher.

  • sram x5 sucks ass mine broke 2day first day of owning it

  • I have a DEORE RD-M510 mech & an old XTR M952 the deore mech is so slack in lower gears & slow to change at times it cant keep the chain on Im forever stopping, I cant cycle as fast or do as much without the chain falling off. The XTR mech is really old now but still works as well as the day I bought it its looking tatty but is still stiff & super responsive.

Most mechs Ive used since my early 90s Deore DX has been junk, this XTR mech keeps on goin. its outlasted anythin else even the DX mech.

  • depends what you want to use your bike for. For dirt jumping or downhill use sram if you ride to work at a set passe on smooth roads using shimano is good. on rough track shimano tend to slip gears and damage the chain and paint work much more than sram i have one of each on my ride to work bike and my dirt jump bike its not which is better its which is better at what

  • Shimano makes great cranks and front derailleurs. For rear derailleurs, chains and shifters, go SRAM.

  • must to do the comparition but with sram x5 and the shimano deore 592, model 2010, shimano no move too

  • Good video... thank you!!

  • All we see here is that Deore is shaking more than X.5 on very rough terrain. It does not necessarily mean that X.5 is better in all circumstances.

  • they are both good components, however if you want some head turning parts you choose SRAM.

  • no, SRAM is much better .

  • eeeah no vale madre shimano... jaja mejor sram!!!

  • lol Deore is like the most basic you can get from Shimano... and they are still very good components... try comparing XTR, Saint, Yumeya... those are production series Shimano is proud of... it also depends what frint gears are you using in this comparison... which is unknown in this case... i personally prefer shimano, i have an SRAM crankset since some months ago and it is already wearing a bit on 28T and 22T

  • there both shit get X0 OR XTR

  • Thanks for the advice. Those of use who don't live with our moms have nothing better to do with $200 than spend it on a derailleur.....really.

  • more movement is better, that what it's supposed to do, move :)

  • no, more likely for the chain to skip a gear.

  • @stephenpprice actually that depends on how supposed the system to work, if the rear derailleur is flexible that means shifting takes much less effort, there fore the shifters in this case do not work the same. Your riding style is another variant on the component, is not like you are going to use Deore for freeriding...

  • Yeah you do have a point, the style of riding is important. i prefer the SRAMs shifting on freeride DH trails whereas the Shimano may be better on the XC stuff.

  • That chain was too long for shimano, that's why it looks that crap. Look in what position is Sram sign and Shimano. The shimano is not stretched. There should be screw some where to set the stretch up.

  • Are you kidding me 16 grams will not make any difference.

  • are you kidding me 16 gra

  • this is very stupid video, sram deraileurs doesn't have a spring around bolt with who is attached to the frame, so it's body can't move at all...... sram is stronger, sharper, stiffer.... but shimano is more elegant for xc marathons!

  • Wow how pointless! i Still wouldnt buy anything sram

  • @hiddencupcake well they did get one thing right there avid brakes and rockshox forks but thats about it

  • Sta pricate seljaci jedni iz Amerike, samo nesto serete ko magarci...ponika je zakon, kakav Shimano, kakav Sram, sram da vas bude...

  • All very nice. Unfortunately, the video can't show that my Deore has lasted 6 years, and is still going strong. Neither can it show the amount of Sram X.5's and X.7's we used to get returned to my shop. The stopper is plastic, allowing overshift and eventually a mech in the rear wheel. Nice.

  • What a whole lot of effort to showing NOTHING! I love SRAM but this isn't working well to show why it's superior. The whole point of these mechanisms is shifting gears. This video shows none of that.

  • shimano is best on all world

  • SHIMANO SUCKS ARE YOU BLIND DWARF?

  • thanks for the great vid. but i'm just a little too late. i bought Shimano Deore RD M531 just today. should have bought SRAM..='(

  • mike-

You'll be fine. I have a lot of SRAM parts but your Shimano setup is great too. This video is next to pointless. If the video showed how bouncing affected shifting, THEN it would show something important. Otherwise, this video is irrelevant.

  • thanks man.. been riding with deore rd and works really fine at all..^^

  • @mikoece002 been riding on me bike with deore and guess what compared to my bike with sram x5. i kinda visit my bike tech(s) more often with shimano deore to what ??? adjust the rear derailuer.....

  • i have a deore on my bigfoot it totally kicks ass i don't care what you sram freaks say either its just my opinion and moving around doesn't mean anything like all these videos try to say

  • it soesnt matter about movement. as long as it provides clean quick shifts. shimano rapes sram

  • And how can it provie quick and clean shifts if it's bouncing like that.

  • i beat my alivio to hell and it always shifs great and its a step down form deore and x5. my buddy has a gary fisher piranha w/ x5 any my alivio always shifts better than his. may just be because i know how to tune mine.

  • sram buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • No son de la misma gama, ademas la cadena del desbiador deore esta mas larga,

    XTR & SRAM

    DEORE & SRAM no

  • Can I use a Shimano XT derailleur and a SRAM XO shifter? Are they compatible?

  • I don't think they are compatible. Most SRAM components have a 1:1 actuation ratio which are only compatible with each other. I think you can use a Shimano front derailleur though with SRAM shifters, just not the rear one.

  • depends on rear or front. you cant use sram shifter with shimano rear drailleur. but you can use shimano front with sram shifter.

    shimano=2:1

    sram=1:1

    (front doesn't matter)

  • No.

  • I'll go for Shimano. I have a Shimano Deore DX since 91. And only recently that I replaced it with a Shimano XT derailleur. The DX served me well.

  • There are advantages and dis-advantages from both.

The shimano mech. is absorbing all of the energy from the rough terrain by moving up and down and exerting it, this leaves a lot of chain slap, but a long lasting mech.

The sram isnt exerting the energy, but simply transfering it to other components, primarily the chain, but it dosent produce as much chain slap as the shimano.

Both have there ups and downs :D

  • Comment removed

  • To be brutally and totally honest i think that you just favour the SRAM company as i have watched more than one of these videos and you always seem to put the movement lines on the shimano shifters from the top of the bracket to the bottom of the main body whereas on the SRAM you only measure from the main body so the shimano will look like it moves more. I have had 5 shimano shifters with no problems, they are meant to move like that to take the pressure. I think there better personally.

  • Form this video, you can see, sram is better. But now is isnt true. Todays deore is very better, like that, what you can see on this video

  • siema IN POLAND ,,SRAM,, IS FIRST ------PRODUCT

  • Look closer, and realize the chain in the SRAM component jumps a lot more, it means, the chain is receiving all the impact, and with the Shimano, it absorbs part of it.

In this comparison, I'd go Shimano, because the movement absorbs part of the impact and absorbs it, then, the chain has less possibility of breaking.

However, both top of the line brands, the difference is Shimano makes also cheap and affordable components, as much as good and expensive, SRAM goes for the medium high level only.

  • So what exactly does this comparison prove? Deore is designed to move like that and to absorb shock that way. Pointless vid...

  • good job with the vid dude! :)

and gmarte12, don't be such a dick, you can't put an x9 on a normal Xc/A bike ...lets say a Cube Aim or something

  • thx buddy for that video! you really help me! i always think that shimano is better, but i wrong! SRAM RULES!!!

  • huhh, thanks man!

  • The der. might be a few grams lighter, but the X.5 shifters are useless junk. Deore have a MUCH more sound and quality feel to them. And that's saying something.

  • video for noobs... the least anyone should go would either be an xt or a x9

  • i got 2 Bikes

one with shimano and one with SRAM X.5

    SRAM is verry stronger.

    shimano moves to much.

SRAM is more for ofroad and jumps.

i think that this test a good reason is why SRAM works better.

    holla at ya P2 Cr-Mo

  • untill now i thought shimano was the best... well thanks for letting me know that my bike is piece of shit lol

  • Shimano XTR is the best

  • nope, sram X.0 is the best.

  • shimano sux at all!

  • If shimano sux at all, they wouldn't be biggest producer of bike-components

  • @TheIncredibleOne McDonalds is also the largest fast food franchise, but does that mean they make the best food?

  • @TheIncridibleOne McDonalds is also the largest fast food franchise, but does that mean they make the best food?

  • @theluckyman74 they make the best fast food.....because thats the category they are in.

  • @theluckyman74 First of all, you are comparing apples to oranges here. Shimano is the biggest producer but that in no way means they don't use quality materials to make their products. Your analogy fails.

  • @TheIncridibleOne The only reason that shimano is a bigger producer of parts is because they make a much wider range of parts and they have much higher end parts as well. Not every shimano part is good. Maybe you should do a little bit more research before you comment on something.

  • @TheIncridibleOne you may talk all day and just don't say anything smart or you can say one sentence and say everythink.

and this test proofs that sram is better than shimano

  • Hey DARKSCOPE001. shimano is way better. reason is y is bouncing all over the place is cuz it has to transfer all that energy to somwhere. sram is wrecking itself cuz the energy from the bike going over rough terrain is stuck on the mech. however in shimano, too much chain slap sux. so u gotta strike a balance.

  • I have have both and like the deore much more than the sram. The sram have destroyed the cassete on my bike in only 200 miles and requires adjustments all the time. It seems very weird because I'll adjust it and 50 miles late its moved and pops out of gear. Maybe there's something wrong with it. I've just about had enough.

  • that sounds like the exact same thing that happens to my deore rear derailleur

  • Turns out it wasn't moving up and down correctly and that it was bent so the bike shop replaced it and none it works perfectly. It does have a hard time on tree roots.

  • ya me animaron me voy a comprar SRAM X.5 y el shimano lo daré de baja, con razon kiebro mi deskarrilador salu2

  • Never Buy a 29er? Really? You can make that broad and ignorant a statement without some unpacking? Sad day indeed. I live on the east coast, lots of roots and rocks... 26in hardtails rattle like crazy out here and 29er's are pretty much the norm in racing (on the podium anyway) Maybe you should do a bit of research before you make yourself sound ignorant... to the point, The shop I work at replaces shimano derailers regularly, sram ones usually destroy the hangers... very sturdy!

  • i kinda think this test is rigged. when you ride with the sram gear it looks like you are choosing a more flowing line that moves over less obsicles. now that said i am a sram man myself. im sure shimano is great im not dissing it in any way shape or form its just my local bike shop deals mostly sram components so thats what i buy. ill give shimano a try one day but it pry wont be for a while because i have sram everything on my bike.

  • That is a good point. I work as a bike mechanic and can say that while sram may perform better here the deore mech will be far more durable over time. maybe because it has this flexibility.

  • interestign consideration...

  • SRAM all the way I mean they make rockshox and avids. Deores are shit, and btw never buy a 29er

  • sram is over priced junk...

  • sram does not take any hits like shimano

shimano have a spring in it to take pressure

during downhill , freeride or off-road

sram though design is nice but many have

broke thiers during downhill as it stay in it's position and dosen't take much hit

though lighter but shimano is still better..

  • 08 xt vs 08 x-9,which one is better you think?because i got both of em,and i have to sale one of em...thanks!!

  • crap! it's a forjed test!

  • Sram snaps gear hangers, because of the rigid design.

That is THE single dumbest test I have ever seen.

  • How dumb is this comparison! It is one derailleur that was BUILT WITH an articulation pivot (articulation is something to articulate) and compared to another derailleur that was BUILT WITHOUT articulation pivot; Compare XTR Shadow and X-0 if you are so smart.

  • i have a sram x5 on my 2007 norco manik and it makes a clicking sound. it really annoys me so please respond on tips on how to fix this. i will be very greatful. :)

  • Sram sucks.

  • The chain is too slack on the shimano tester.

  • Thank you for this comparison! I'm getting ready to purchase a bike and the rear derailleurs are the only difference between the two bikes. It just so happens one has the Deore and one has the X.5. I am comparing a Gary Fisher Cobia (X.5) to a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29 (Deore). The specialized is also more expensive!! Go Gary Fisher, Go SRAM!

  • SRAM Rules ! I remember I had horrid response from my old deore xt groupset with my old bike and my new bike now sports a X-9 groupset which has never let me down yet
