Had my bike 7 months, I haven't been able to get the shifting 100% and it's been adjusted several times, always wants to slip when I'm trying to go all out. broke an x7 and just broke the x9 I replaced it with. I sported a Deore setup on my old bike for years and had no problems.
@youhenyo Im considering a new giant talon 29er, is the X5 durable? will it handle rough terrain with quick shifting? personally i had two shimanos that never did the job right :(

Come to think of it I've been riding with a deore derailleur for about 3 years now and I've never cared about it bouncing around, it does but I honestly can't think of a time where that has actually had an effect on my riding.
If it ever breaks or stops working well I'll take it into consideration but if it doesn’t effect my riding it doesn't bother me.

This is a very interesting comparison video. I use SRAM, but my husband uses Shimano. His shimano has been tough as nails. My SRAM is a bit more fickle, then again I also ride differently than he does.

@sswwrrable i agree sram has great products but you cant rule out shimano they have super good products as well just not the deore line. i have sram on some of my bikes and i have shimano on some of my bike as well. their all really good componets. and ive had no problem with either. i always say you dont like the products shut up and buy something that is stronger and will last longer. if you cant afford it dont complain.
sram's wear out alot faster tho beacuse where do you think the energy is going to go? right to the drop out and they bend alot faster, shimano allll the way.
This video helped me decide what mtn bike to get. I always was a shimano fan having used everything but XT and XTR. From just looking at a bike in a shop, Shimano derailliurs look more durable and nicer. After seeing this video however, it's obvious ! I'd like to see X-9 against SLX or XT even ? But if X-5 works that well, X-7 , X-9, X-0, and X-X must be superbe ! When I get my next Mtn bike I'll try X-7 in fron, X-9 in back and X-7 shifters. Probably a Trek or Gary Fisher.
I have a DEORE RD-M510 mech & an old XTR M952 the deore mech is so slack in lower gears & slow to change at times it cant keep the chain on Im forever stopping, I cant cycle as fast or do as much without the chain falling off. The XTR mech is really old now but still works as well as the day I bought it its looking tatty but is still stiff & super responsive.
Most mechs Ive used since my early 90s Deore DX has been junk, this XTR mech keeps on goin. its outlasted anythin else even the DX mech.
depends what you want to use your bike for. For dirt jumping or downhill use sram if you ride to work at a set passe on smooth roads using shimano is good. on rough track shimano tend to slip gears and damage the chain and paint work much more than sram i have one of each on my ride to work bike and my dirt jump bike its not which is better its which is better at what
lol Deore is like the most basic you can get from Shimano... and they are still very good components... try comparing XTR, Saint, Yumeya... those are production series Shimano is proud of... it also depends what frint gears are you using in this comparison... which is unknown in this case... i personally prefer shimano, i have an SRAM crankset since some months ago and it is already wearing a bit on 28T and 22T
@stephenpprice actually that depends on how supposed the system to work, if the rear derailleur is flexible that means shifting takes much less effort, there fore the shifters in this case do not work the same. Your riding style is another variant on the component, is not like you are going to use Deore for freeriding...
Yeah you do have a point, the style of riding is important. i prefer the SRAMs shifting on freeride DH trails whereas the Shimano may be better on the XC stuff.
That chain was too long for shimano, that's why it looks that crap. Look in what position is Sram sign and Shimano. The shimano is not stretched. There should be screw some where to set the stretch up.
this is very stupid video, sram deraileurs doesn't have a spring around bolt with who is attached to the frame, so it's body can't move at all...... sram is stronger, sharper, stiffer.... but shimano is more elegant for xc marathons!
All very nice. Unfortunately, the video can't show that my Deore has lasted 6 years, and is still going strong. Neither can it show the amount of Sram X.5's and X.7's we used to get returned to my shop. The stopper is plastic, allowing overshift and eventually a mech in the rear wheel. Nice.
What a whole lot of effort to showing NOTHING! I love SRAM but this isn't working well to show why it's superior. The whole point of these mechanisms is shifting gears. This video shows none of that.
You'll be fine. I have a lot of SRAM parts but your Shimano setup is great too. This video is next to pointless. If the video showed how bouncing affected shifting, THEN it would show something important. Otherwise, this video is irrelevant.
@mikoece002 been riding on me bike with deore and guess what compared to my bike with sram x5. i kinda visit my bike tech(s) more often with shimano deore to what ??? adjust the rear derailuer.....
i have a deore on my bigfoot it totally kicks ass i don't care what you sram freaks say either its just my opinion and moving around doesn't mean anything like all these videos try to say
i beat my alivio to hell and it always shifs great and its a step down form deore and x5. my buddy has a gary fisher piranha w/ x5 any my alivio always shifts better than his. may just be because i know how to tune mine.
I don't think they are compatible. Most SRAM components have a 1:1 actuation ratio which are only compatible with each other. I think you can use a Shimano front derailleur though with SRAM shifters, just not the rear one.
There are advantages and dis-advantages from both.
The shimano mech. is absorbing all of the energy from the rough terrain by moving up and down and exerting it, this leaves a lot of chain slap, but a long lasting mech.
The sram isnt exerting the energy, but simply transfering it to other components, primarily the chain, but it dosent produce as much chain slap as the shimano.
To be brutally and totally honest i think that you just favour the SRAM company as i have watched more than one of these videos and you always seem to put the movement lines on the shimano shifters from the top of the bracket to the bottom of the main body whereas on the SRAM you only measure from the main body so the shimano will look like it moves more. I have had 5 shimano shifters with no problems, they are meant to move like that to take the pressure. I think there better personally.
Look closer, and realize the chain in the SRAM component jumps a lot more, it means, the chain is receiving all the impact, and with the Shimano, it absorbs part of it.
In this comparison, I'd go Shimano, because the movement absorbs part of the impact and absorbs it, then, the chain has less possibility of breaking.
However, both top of the line brands, the difference is Shimano makes also cheap and affordable components, as much as good and expensive, SRAM goes for the medium high level only.
The der. might be a few grams lighter, but the X.5 shifters are useless junk. Deore have a MUCH more sound and quality feel to them. And that's saying something.
@theluckyman74 First of all, you are comparing apples to oranges here. Shimano is the biggest producer but that in no way means they don't use quality materials to make their products. Your analogy fails.
@TheIncridibleOne The only reason that shimano is a bigger producer of parts is because they make a much wider range of parts and they have much higher end parts as well. Not every shimano part is good. Maybe you should do a little bit more research before you comment on something.
Hey DARKSCOPE001. shimano is way better. reason is y is bouncing all over the place is cuz it has to transfer all that energy to somwhere. sram is wrecking itself cuz the energy from the bike going over rough terrain is stuck on the mech. however in shimano, too much chain slap sux. so u gotta strike a balance.
I have have both and like the deore much more than the sram. The sram have destroyed the cassete on my bike in only 200 miles and requires adjustments all the time. It seems very weird because I'll adjust it and 50 miles late its moved and pops out of gear. Maybe there's something wrong with it. I've just about had enough.
Turns out it wasn't moving up and down correctly and that it was bent so the bike shop replaced it and none it works perfectly. It does have a hard time on tree roots.
Never Buy a 29er? Really? You can make that broad and ignorant a statement without some unpacking? Sad day indeed. I live on the east coast, lots of roots and rocks... 26in hardtails rattle like crazy out here and 29er's are pretty much the norm in racing (on the podium anyway) Maybe you should do a bit of research before you make yourself sound ignorant... to the point, The shop I work at replaces shimano derailers regularly, sram ones usually destroy the hangers... very sturdy!
i kinda think this test is rigged. when you ride with the sram gear it looks like you are choosing a more flowing line that moves over less obsicles. now that said i am a sram man myself. im sure shimano is great im not dissing it in any way shape or form its just my local bike shop deals mostly sram components so thats what i buy. ill give shimano a try one day but it pry wont be for a while because i have sram everything on my bike.
That is a good point. I work as a bike mechanic and can say that while sram may perform better here the deore mech will be far more durable over time. maybe because it has this flexibility.
How dumb is this comparison! It is one derailleur that was BUILT WITH an articulation pivot (articulation is something to articulate) and compared to another derailleur that was BUILT WITHOUT articulation pivot; Compare XTR Shadow and X-0 if you are so smart.
i have a sram x5 on my 2007 norco manik and it makes a clicking sound. it really annoys me so please respond on tips on how to fix this. i will be very greatful. :)
Thank you for this comparison! I'm getting ready to purchase a bike and the rear derailleurs are the only difference between the two bikes. It just so happens one has the Deore and one has the X.5. I am comparing a Gary Fisher Cobia (X.5) to a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29 (Deore). The specialized is also more expensive!! Go Gary Fisher, Go SRAM!
SRAM Rules ! I remember I had horrid response from my old deore xt groupset with my old bike and my new bike now sports a X-9 groupset which has never let me down yet

But then I looked back at my experience. I had a Deore on my old bike for many many years. PERFECT shifts every time.
I've had a X5 on my current bike. It occasionally slipped between 5th and 6th. After having it a whole 2 months it snapped.
Then I see another commenter here has had 2 snap on him.
Then I see you're running the Deore in highest gear (lots of chain slack) & SRAM in medium gear (less chain slack)

You'll be fine. I have a lot of SRAM parts but your Shimano setup is great too. This video is next to pointless. If the video showed how bouncing affected shifting, THEN it would show something important. Otherwise, this video is irrelevant.
britney00 2 years ago
thanks man.. been riding with deore rd and works really fine at all..^^
mikoece002 2 years ago
@mikoece002 been riding on me bike with deore and guess what compared to my bike with sram x5. i kinda visit my bike tech(s) more often with shimano deore to what ??? adjust the rear derailuer.....
SarsaNiTomas 2 years ago
i have a deore on my bigfoot it totally kicks ass i don't care what you sram freaks say either its just my opinion and moving around doesn't mean anything like all these videos try to say
GREIVINGDEATH 2 years ago
it soesnt matter about movement. as long as it provides clean quick shifts. shimano rapes sram
bandoboy32 2 years ago
And how can it provie quick and clean shifts if it's bouncing like that.
Thundermand 2 years ago 2
i beat my alivio to hell and it always shifs great and its a step down form deore and x5. my buddy has a gary fisher piranha w/ x5 any my alivio always shifts better than his. may just be because i know how to tune mine.

Can I use a Shimano XT derailleur and a SRAM XO shifter? Are they compatible?
perto75 2 years ago
I don't think they are compatible. Most SRAM components have a 1:1 actuation ratio which are only compatible with each other. I think you can use a Shimano front derailleur though with SRAM shifters, just not the rear one.
VicDeRattlehead 2 years ago 2
depends on rear or front. you cant use sram shifter with shimano rear drailleur. but you can use shimano front with sram shifter.
shimano=2:1
sram=1:1
(front doesn't matter)

No.
ftpaddict 2 years ago
I'll go for Shimano. I have a Shimano Deore DX since 91. And only recently that I replaced it with a Shimano XT derailleur. The DX served me well.
perto75 2 years ago
There are advantages and dis-advantages from both.
The shimano mech. is absorbing all of the energy from the rough terrain by moving up and down and exerting it, this leaves a lot of chain slap, but a long lasting mech.
The sram isnt exerting the energy, but simply transfering it to other components, primarily the chain, but it dosent produce as much chain slap as the shimano.
Both have there ups and downs :D

To be brutally and totally honest i think that you just favour the SRAM company as i have watched more than one of these videos and you always seem to put the movement lines on the shimano shifters from the top of the bracket to the bottom of the main body whereas on the SRAM you only measure from the main body so the shimano will look like it moves more. I have had 5 shimano shifters with no problems, they are meant to move like that to take the pressure. I think there better personally.
lupidoz367 2 years ago 5
Form this video, you can see, sram is better. But now is isnt true. Todays deore is very better, like that, what you can see on this video

siema IN POLAND ,,SRAM,, IS FIRST ------PRODUCT
hoolgolo13 2 years ago
Look closer, and realize the chain in the SRAM component jumps a lot more, it means, the chain is receiving all the impact, and with the Shimano, it absorbs part of it.
In this comparison, I'd go Shimano, because the movement absorbs part of the impact and absorbs it, then, the chain has less possibility of breaking.
However, both top of the line brands, the difference is Shimano makes also cheap and affordable components, as much as good and expensive, SRAM goes for the medium high level only.
LZcool 2 years ago
So what exactly does this comparison prove? Deore is designed to move like that and to absorb shock that way. Pointless vid...

good job with the vid dude! :)
and gmarte12, don't be such a dick, you can't put an x9 on a normal Xc/A bike ...lets say a Cube Aim or something

The der. might be a few grams lighter, but the X.5 shifters are useless junk. Deore have a MUCH more sound and quality feel to them. And that's saying something.
ofcourseofcourseofco 3 years ago
video for noobs... the least anyone should go would either be an xt or a x9
gmarte12 3 years ago
i got 2 Bikes
one with shimano and one with SRAM X.5
SRAM is verry stronger.
shimano moves to much.
SRAM is more for ofroad and jumps.
i think that this test a good reason is why SRAM works better.

@theluckyman74 they make the best fast food.....because thats the category they are in.
esoberanis1 1 year ago
@theluckyman74 First of all, you are comparing apples to oranges here. Shimano is the biggest producer but that in no way means they don't use quality materials to make their products. Your analogy fails.

@TheIncridibleOne shut up you idiot.
whitewash365 1 year ago
@TheIncridibleOne The only reason that shimano is a bigger producer of parts is because they make a much wider range of parts and they have much higher end parts as well. Not every shimano part is good. Maybe you should do a little bit more research before you comment on something.
Jaso0n1986 1 year ago
@TheIncridibleOne you may talk all day and just don't say anything smart or you can say one sentence and say everythink.
and this test proofs that sram is better than shimano
Stefan15bt 1 year ago
Hey DARKSCOPE001. shimano is way better. reason is y is bouncing all over the place is cuz it has to transfer all that energy to somwhere. sram is wrecking itself cuz the energy from the bike going over rough terrain is stuck on the mech. however in shimano, too much chain slap sux. so u gotta strike a balance.
goondhu64 3 years ago
I have have both and like the deore much more than the sram. The sram have destroyed the cassete on my bike in only 200 miles and requires adjustments all the time. It seems very weird because I'll adjust it and 50 miles late its moved and pops out of gear. Maybe there's something wrong with it. I've just about had enough.
ralphp1800 3 years ago
that sounds like the exact same thing that happens to my deore rear derailleur
germankid93 3 years ago
Turns out it wasn't moving up and down correctly and that it was bent so the bike shop replaced it and none it works perfectly. It does have a hard time on tree roots.

ya me animaron me voy a comprar SRAM X.5 y el shimano lo daré de baja, con razon kiebro mi deskarrilador salu2

Never Buy a 29er? Really? You can make that broad and ignorant a statement without some unpacking? Sad day indeed. I live on the east coast, lots of roots and rocks... 26in hardtails rattle like crazy out here and 29er's are pretty much the norm in racing (on the podium anyway) Maybe you should do a bit of research before you make yourself sound ignorant... to the point, The shop I work at replaces shimano derailers regularly, sram ones usually destroy the hangers... very sturdy!
singletrack29349 3 years ago
i kinda think this test is rigged. when you ride with the sram gear it looks like you are choosing a more flowing line that moves over less obsicles. now that said i am a sram man myself. im sure shimano is great im not dissing it in any way shape or form its just my local bike shop deals mostly sram components so thats what i buy. ill give shimano a try one day but it pry wont be for a while because i have sram everything on my bike.

That is a good point. I work as a bike mechanic and can say that while sram may perform better here the deore mech will be far more durable over time. maybe because it has this flexibility.

SRAM all the way I mean they make rockshox and avids. Deores are shit, and btw never buy a 29er

bikegirl1983 3 years ago
sram does not take any hits like shimano
shimano have a spring in it to take pressure
during downhill , freeride or off-road
sram though design is nice but many have
broke thiers during downhill as it stay in it's position and dosen't take much hit
though lighter but shimano is still better..

Sram snaps gear hangers, because of the rigid design.
That is THE single dumbest test I have ever seen.
mxlemming 3 years ago 4
How dumb is this comparison! It is one derailleur that was BUILT WITH an articulation pivot (articulation is something to articulate) and compared to another derailleur that was BUILT WITHOUT articulation pivot; Compare XTR Shadow and X-0 if you are so smart.
