u buggin'...It's a fact. Michael has slightly more range, and he can do more things with his voice. Michael's voice is just more versatile & unique. He can sing pretty much any Brian Mcknight song, but it doesn't work the other way around. A lot of people (for some strange reason) overlook Mike's supreme vocal abilities because he's talented in so many other ways as well.

I love Brian Mcknight but he is not the singer Micheal Jackson was. If you truly have an ear for vocals you know this to be true. Mikes tones were almost flawless.
But MJ doesn't play the piano. He can't play any instruments. Have you seen him play anything? And MJ can't belt. He doesn't have the powerful vocals that Brian has. Michael sings as if he was speaking. Without his dance, Michael would not be this famous.

Just listen to MJ's version - his voice is more mellow and really emphasizes the melody of the song = his voice range is wider - from low to very high. MJ puts more emotion to this song. BM's voice sounded forced and he cannot reach the high pitch - which is required to get the real melody of the song.- that's why he tends to sway off from the true melody of the song.
There´s 2 different versions. Michael is more pop vocals, and as you said, "mellow". Mcknight made a R&B version, focused on techniques. MJ NEVER did melismatic vocals and yodeling fast and good as BM (actually few people in the world do). And BM sang in a lower key, obviously he wouldn´t reach same high notes than the original. BM is not "forcing". He´s using a technique called "cover belting", pretty common with R&B singers. Sometimes sounds weird for those who isn´t that into this style.
that's what i am trying to say - Michael has a longer and wider range vocal chords and can easily reach high notes. you cannot say that with BM. with Michael you can really hear the melody, BM deviates from the real melody because of his limited vocal range
BM have 4 octaves, same as MJ. The difference is Michael is a contratenor, while Mcknight is 2nd tenor (but Mcknight hits a lot of Stevie Wonder´s high notes, and have low notes that Michael would never reach. And yes, i know 2000 watts). Even this is contestable. Michael sings with a technique called speech level singing and as Mcknight, he belts a lot too.
Range don´t mean a thing. The one known as "The Voice" (Sinatra) had less than 2 octaves.

that's what i am trying to say - Michael has a longer and wider range vocal chords and can easily reach high notes. you cannot say that with BM. with Michael you can really hear the melody, BM deviates from the real melody because of his limited vocal range

BM have 4 octaves, same as MJ. The difference is Michael is a contratenor, while Mcknight is 2nd tenor (but Mcknight hits a lot of Stevie Wonder´s high notes, and have low notes that Michael would never reach. And yes, i know 2000 watts). Even this is contestable. Michael sings with a technique called speech level singing and as Mcknight, he belts a lot too.
Range don´t mean a thing. The one known as "The Voice" (Sinatra) had less than 2 octaves.

Ladies and gentlemen please take it easy. I love them both as vocalist. It depends on how you look at it. MJ in his prime had to dance and sing at the same time wich is nealy imposible to do. Have you seen any modern artist dance with such intensity and singing in tune these days? No, they all have to cheat with lipsync. When Michael was a kid he was a great vocalist- but the way he uses his voice now is pathetic. Michael's "adult" is flat, nasal, and shows no vocal talent other than being on pitch- Michael's adult voice doesn't even have vibrato. That little trill michael does instead of vibrato is pitiful. He needs to get another nose job so he hit better notes.

Michael is freakishly gifted as a vocalist, and his voice coach, Seth Riggs, who has also coached the likes of Stevie Wonder and Barbra Streisand has said Michael is the most talented male vocalist he's ever heard. Michael could do what Brian does EASY. You better believe it. The man is outstanding and a much better singer in terms of timing, control and phrasing.
