Definitely kitten, I've had a few of my own and that mouth thing was pretty much only the two love-to-be-outside cats did. Except they did it to birds and occasional bugs. Our biggest is a chicken but he does that at the window, and its hilarious because you just know that once he went outside he'd freak out from a leaf, shred your arms, and dash inside. Hahaha yours is just an adorable lil creature s/he is =3
So cute! The cats I have now don't do it but I've had cats that have done it. I thought it was just an excited thing; I didn't know it was a hunting thing :O
big deal my cats do that all the time and by the way they do that because there mouth is like watering almost as if they can taste what they are looking at
no.. cat's do this because once, long ago, they had a jacobsons organ. like snakes stick their tongues out to "sense" what's around them, this instinct has survived with cats (although they no longer have the organ).
Its a group trait that has survived evolution. In the wild it signals hunting partners of a target while the target does not know what the sound is as it is an uncommon clicking sound. It has survived domestication as there probably was no need for brethers to remove that trait, and probably difficult to remove as all cats have it.
lmao i know that reaction from the cat, it means it wants to eat it!!! i have seen my cat do this when he sees a bird, then he goes reallllly slowly creeping on it...although he fails to catch it
my old kitty used to do that! with the laser light.. hed make an odd clicking noise with his mouth and attack the light while his brother and sister looked at him like he was some kind of idiot
sotrmygirl2525, Yup it's calling the squirrel. The pussy cat wants to play with it.
I mean it, It's what my pet guinea pig did when it saw an elephant outside my window. The guinea pig started trumpeting its little nose off!! Really!!
But then the elephant saw the neighbours dog and started barking.
Which would have been okay if the neighbours dog didn't see the stray cat & begin to meow.
Actually, i've let my indoor cats (not declawed) loose a couple of times to see if they could catch the family of squirrels that's been invading my chimney. The cats can never get within 10 yards before the squirrels see and hear them. They're used to being behind glass where they can chatter and swish their tail around without scaring away the squirrel. But when they're outside, they have no idea that the squirrels can now easily detect them the moment they aren't separated by a glass door.

It's not chattering. It's not hypnotizing the squirrel. It's called Chittering! It happens when cats get frustrated because their prey is out of reach. It's very natural and all cats will do it to some degree. Usually a "chirping" sound goes with it. Trust me, this cat is fine. Totally natural!
