I am a HUUUUUUGE Groucho fan and love his Cavett interviews which makes this recording all that more hilarious. My stomach hurts so badly I can't stop laughing ... especially at the part where Gottfried does Groucho describing how to make tea at 3:50
@46spoony Groucho on Cavett is way before my time, but someone uploaded them on YouTube. The guy's username is user/cavettbiter Go through his videos and you can see all of the Groucho interviews.
This is incredibly, incredibly funny!!! But I have to disagree with the assessment of Groucho on the Cavett interviews. They show a seasoned and experienced comedy legend reminiscing on life. They are the only interviews you can find of him ever being serious. He was still very funny, and was not failing, it's just that for the Cavett interviews he made the conscious choice to be serious because he really liked Dick Cavett and considered him witty and urbane and enjoyed talking with him.
As a Groucho fan, I wince a little when I hear this clip. But it is so dead on accurate that it's funny. Search for Groucho & Dick Cavett and you can see what they mean.
I agree. I saw Gilbert at Caroline's in NYC about 20 years ago. He was doing things like Humphrey Bogart in the post office and George Jessel. He was brilliant.
Respond to this video... Back in my day, living in Brighton, TN, there wasn't much to do in those days, except look out the windows at the cows or watch a hog run down Main Street, or maybe watch a horse pee and laugh at that...Gilbert & Howard were my life then.
this is pure genius. I've heard this impression 10 times at least and I can't get enough. Why doesn't Gilbert do more of this stuff and less pussy, shit and cunt jokes(not that I mind those but he is obviously a really intelligent guy and I wish he would use that more in his comedy.
This recording is worth a million dollars! Thanks so much! I had this recorded on a cassette tape back in 1997. I thought I would never get to hear it again!!!
That's exactly what I was thinking when I heard the show that day. I wanted to preserve that moment on YouTube so I could listen to it anywhere. Glad you enjoyed the clip! Shame Gilbert didn't reprise his role as Gilbert Gottfried during his appearance on the show this month. It was not like a western this time...
Now there were other people who would drink tea. And the way they'd make tea was they would heat water and they would take a tea bag and they would dunk it into the water. And eventually the tea leaves would flavor the water. And they could also add sugar to tea. Which few people knew about. U could drink iced tea also. They would add ice cubes to the hot tea.
AHAHAHA This NEVER gets old. I must've listened to this clip 20 times over the course of 2 weeks. I don't know much of anything about groucho...and gilbert still has me laughing my balls off every time i listen to this.
I've been looking for this clip for the last couple weeks, ever since I heard this episode. Gilbert on Howard is always comedy gold. But is was actually from 1/14, not 1/13
@FirebirdCamaro1220 That's OK, back in my day we had days of the week. There was Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & so forth, it was like a Western, it felt like a Western.
This doesn't just hold up play after play, it actually gets funnier with every listen.

Me too. I vaguely remember Groucho on Dick Cavett. Howard is the only person who can bring out Gilbert's genius.

This is the kind of dribble that culture has become.
Indignant jabs at Groucho Marx.
Can you imagine it?
Listen to the laugh of that awful woman!
Attacking the weak and unhypocritical is the easiest to do so.
Some of those Dick Cavett interviews were hilarious.
It was a subtlety of humour that the likes of this Gottfried wouldn't understand.
wonderfulwhippet123 10 months ago
@wonderfulwhippet123 I think you meant "drivel." Nice self-righteous rant otherwise, though.

@Username00011000 I about passed out laughing when this aired. I would relate things to westerns for months afterwards.
