@alfebre1 Oppressed Husband?????????? she lets him fly a helicopter for gods sake LOL, there's nothing oppressed about that, wish I could fly a helicopter, much better than a motorbike.
Utter crap. That's the problem when you get non-experts drawing conclusions. This just over dramatises the situation...not good for the industry...
You can't hear the rotor blades... you can hear is engine sound...when a helicopter needs to descend the engine uses less power so the tone drops...the rotors were at the right speed all the time.
The pilot made a 'precautionary landing' for the safety of his passengers. Of course he descends quickly. I think this flight turned 'Good'.
@PHAJ3399 You must be an expert and we acknowledge your expertise and your eloquent social commentary. But, hey, we were just along for the ride -- "non-expert" as we were. Sorry our drama got in the way of your day.
@wboyd1234 Look, I understand you being scared, but fear is 90% ignorance, right?
This was not a the major incident you have portrayed. The pilot acted as any pilot would...to make a rapid descent to a safe place in order to determine the cause of the noise.
Just like Hollywoodportrayal , videos like this only damage the industry as a whole to the point that people (you guys) were nervous before getting in!!!
Instead of thanking the pilot, this video indirectly makes his job harder.
The high pitch whine is the rotor. It stays constant as its meant to. The low pitch sound is the engine. As the helicopter descends less engine power is used. The tone drops.
As you descend quickly, the wing tips go through disturbed air of the previous blade. This causes the whop-whop blade flapping sound.
@PHAJ3399 As a helicopter pilot myself, I have to agree with you. There wasn't really much drama to it. The pilot was cool and collected, he did the right thing and returned right away. However, to a passenger, especially one who's never been up in a helicopter before, I can see how that would have been kind of un-nerving and a little scary. As for you, wboyd1234, I hope this doesn't alter your opinion of helicopters. Don't be afraid to do it again. It is a lot of fun!
haha, he didnt close the engine compartment all the way durning preflight... glad you guys are safe, all those sounds were normal flight sounds though.
Come on! Should have finished the trip. How lame was that? The copter was fine. If was going down you would know it. More like a stone. Not scary at all. Get a grip.
Sorry you had a scare; but having been helicopters for hundreds and hundreds of hours the pop was not a good noise, but the changes you heard in the rotor noise was normal during a decent.
You had a good pilot, he played it safe and turned around when he heard and felt something out of the oridinary.
I just have to put this out there. You went to Vegas, and if you gambled stats say you loose. You get in your car every day and you have a 1/100 chance of dying in a fatal car crash over a period of 50 years. You only have a 4.1 per million hours chance of dying in a helicopter crash. Your more likely to die from alcohol whether you drink or not. Did you even bother to thank your pilot for being a good pilot by not making a bad decision that would've brought you home crispy in a body bag?
i kept lowering my volume expecting some screaming image to appear and scare me. When you were saying " ok listen here it comes" i said to myself okay here comes the screaming monster on my screen!
thanks for sharing,,, we did the night tour ourselves back a few years ago, it was with a company that was on the strip (cant remember the name of the company though, but woth the tour),,, we are in vegas next year (2010),, prob do another flight.... just wish we were nearer as England is quite a way away,,, but glad it all went well for you guys...
I understand that helicopters look and sound frightening, but they are relatively safe. That pilot was just being cautious. I might have kept flying if I had no secondary indications of a serious problem. That probably didn't even make him nervous. The only mistake made, was not informing you of how minor the incident was. If they had, this video would never be on the internet making 2,358 (so far) people scared of rotorcraft.
The snap that you heard was one of the 4 engine cowling laches failing. The change in the sound of the rotors was me changing from a climb power setting to a decent for landing. Thankfully for us there was no loss of engine power. Helicopters are reasonably safe. My wife lets me fly them, she wont let me have a motorcycle though, they're too dangerous. Tony the pilot
Very cool video, probably not for you at the time. Well you still had power since he was able to land without autorotation. The pilot handled it well and got you back safely. A co-wrker of mine had to land on partial power a few summers back doing a tour, when he blew out a cylinder in a Bell-47J. Heli's are safer than most people think.
i just posted my flight over vegas, nothing like this happened. the only thing my pilot had to worry about was my hubby: an air traffic controller haha!
It was scary... and oddly enough, we didn't get a refund. As soon as we landed they ushered us to another helicopter, loaded us on quickly and did another flight over the city (successfully). I still don't know why we did the 2nd ride, but, it was uneventful and cool.
UH no one let stephen change his pants? I am glad that everything worked out OK. I said OK cause having the crap scared out of you only gets an OK. Just think of what the passengers on flight 1249 felt while preparing for a water ditching in the Hudson river.
good for you tony im an oppressed husband too

Yeah, way to sensationalize a pilot's smart call to land the aircraft before somethings bad happened. Worthless video. I want my 9 minutes back.
