  • Thanks - F. McDowell was a very good bluesman - and like Mance Lipscomb he was only discovered in the late 50's.

  • Hey, these guys stole Ted Nugent's song! ;-)

    Love it Steve! 5*!

  • @blindtcjohnson and Fred stole it off Big joe williams !! thanks tc

  • Great post!

A great thing about solo playing (both for a player and for the audience) is the ability to vary tempo for effect. Here his chunka-chunka rhythm under the slide lets him vary his speed while playing the heck out of the blues.

To see what I mean from a songwriter's perspective, listen to a Jesse Winchester album, then go see him live. As brilliant as his songwriting and records are (and he is one of the best), they pale in comparison to his quirky, expressive live, performances.

  • @TimMcMullen thanks tim..the change in tempo here is very effective. I love the way Fred holds on to a riff and really drives the whole song along.

  • Amazing vid, some real driving music! Thanks for sharing.

  • HI Steve. Thanks for this "LAST" post.I hope you could accept that it was a 'rock-a-billyish',blues ( 'antecedent to rock & roll.) Fred McDowell IS one of the true 'roots'.
