Just to use one of your own examples: A meme can indeed be repeated, because it's an open-sourced idea. It's not a piece of copyrighted material, such as a game review. But taking someone else's review and making an almost verbatim copy of it, now that is indeed plagiarism. It's not the style that's important, it's the content.

I am not saying one way or the other who is better, but you cant really compare James going on and on about dying in the Silver Surfer review is being plagiarized by Chris with the Aladdin review. Him talking about touching any edge was just as valid a topic of review as James's was.

It seems to me that the Irate Gamer is certainly unoriginal, but accusing him of plagiarism is a bit extreme. It's clear that he doesn't really bring anything new to the table in his reviews, and that's reason enough to dislike his show. But plagiarism implies the intentional stealing of another person's work. That is a very harsh criticism for someone that dedicates himself to this job. As a critic myself, I know that I would really take accusations of plagiarism like this very personally.
@slickis82 For instance, the fact that they both list the enemies or note that the music is way off isn't really proof of anything. Those things are sort of obvious and, if you were making a review, you probably would point out those things, too. Moreover, jokes like the, "wish I'd gone back in time," are pretty damn obvious, you don't really need to rip it off from somebody else. Note how in the TMNT review when AVGN has to get past the seaweed part, he actually tries to be careful despite the time limit and only had 3 hit points before he dies. Irate, on the other hand, went through that rather sloppily, as if to kill himself on purpose, and he had 5 hit points. Also he edited that part right when he died.

But I don't think the FF comparison is plagiarism (it's just explaining why the U.S. titles are messed up; most people would explain it the same way). IG sure does it badly though. His script is so fucking clumsy, saying "this wasn't Final Fantasy III to begin with" right after he'd used "this" with respect to the DS FFIII, and his poor use of "also" for FFVI's renaming...
Also, for some reason, people always point out the first half of AVGN's Sliver Surfer Die montage, but gloss over the second half, since IG plagarized that half too, in his Yo-Noid and Q*bert videos.
No one seems to have mentioned the toilet flushing sequences. I can't for the life of me remeber what reviews, but AVGN flushed (or at least tried to flush) a NES game down his shitter. The Irate Hack did the same thing with a GBA cartridge.

Irate Gamer is a rip-off of AVGN, and that was wrong, and James could probably take him to court. That said, I do enjoy his videos- and I think that Chris's statement was valid about reviewing the same games will be similar. As for the other incidents, Chris could have talked about the carpet ride better, but many comedy reviewers have death montagues. And what's wrong with explaining the Final Fantasy series? James was first?!?! Holy crap, call the cops! As for the game intro, hard to say

It seems to me that the Irate Gamer is certainly unoriginal, but accusing him of plagiarism is a bit extreme. It's clear that he doesn't really bring anything new to the table in his reviews, and that's reason enough to dislike his show. But plagiarism implies the intentional stealing of another person's work. That is a very harsh criticism for someone that dedicates himself to this job. As a critic myself, I know that I would really take accusations of plagiarism like this very personally.

@slickis82 For instance, the fact that they both list the enemies or note that the music is way off isn't really proof of anything. Those things are sort of obvious and, if you were making a review, you probably would point out those things, too. Moreover, jokes like the, "wish I'd gone back in time," are pretty damn obvious, you don't really need to rip it off from somebody else. All this shows is that they were thinking similar things, nothing more. Hense... unnoriginal, but not plagiarism

Note how in the TMNT review when AVGN has to get past the seaweed part, he actually tries to be careful despite the time limit and only had 3 hit points before he dies. Irate, on the other hand, went through that rather sloppily, as if to kill himself on purpose, and he had 5 hit points. Also he edited that part right when he died.

But I don't think the FF comparison is plagiarism (it's just explaining why the U.S. titles are messed up; most people would explain it the same way). IG sure does it badly though. His script is so fucking clumsy, saying "this wasn't Final Fantasy III to begin with" right after he'd used "this" with respect to the DS FFIII, and his poor use of "also" for FFVI's renaming...
