  • True Grit 2010, some heart-rending tracks.

  • anychance you can upload hurtlocker and westpoint

  • also forgot the movie and the band played on . i love the music in the moive it helps tells the hunting story of how aids was introduce into the world

  • The best modern film composer. His music ALWAYS adds to a film.

  • @triplettam im not slamming carter burwell in any way...but i reckon hans zimmer would give him a run for his money

  • @S0NiCCCCC No, you're right. Hans is great. Danny Elfman also. Carter just has a style that is very unique. I still remember the opening of "Fargo" and that violin when all of a sudden the whole orchestra hits and you see the car coming out of the snow fog. Powerful stuff. Slainte.

  • @triplettam Me too!! Fargo will always stick out to me as well as the music for Being John Malkovich, the opening of Fear (Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg) and The Jackal. The music for the Spanish Prisoner is pretty amazing too

  • No offense, but the Carter Burwell score for Psycho 3 is the kind of music that belongs in a Sega Genesis game, like the cue at 6:23.

  • @jennaE36 It was 1986, give the guy a break LOL! That type of music was popular then.

  • Comment removed

  • @jennaE36 The sample at 6:23 is not from the OST but from Scream of Love, a single released to support the film. No one involved with making the movie wanted to do it but the studio insisted on having some kind of music tie-in, so they could use MTV for free publicity. Rather than hiring a generic rock band, Anthony Perkins managed to convince them to go with a 'popped up' version of the score. If you want to hear the haunting and brilliant original, search for Psycho 3 - Maureen in the Desert

  • Another team: Joela and Ethan Coen, and Carter Burwell.

  • in bruges the best

  • being a composer must be so hard

  • i can't believe he did twilight... in bruges was so amazing (the soundtrack)

  • I don't know why, but I love the music from The Hoax!

  • Anyone knows the American Dad episode with the Raising Arizona theme in it?

  • Fargo ='s Burwell's BEST!

  • I love Fargo!

  • Blood Simple for christ's sake!

  • If there was ever any music that didn't suit the film, its gotta be conspiracy theory. For reals...

  • @josswhedon692 to be honest with you I had never heard of Carter Burwell until twilight. Even though I had seen movies with his songs in them. But since Twilight sagas scores cds it's opened up my eyes to more instrumental music and I have to say his one of the best. So dont be mad that thats what you get most of. Think of it this way. It is something that is getting both him and his work noticed by more people and more people are liking his music. In the end everyone is winning.

  • the theme to barton fink is just so powerful and amazing, just like the film!

carter burwell is easily one of my favourite composers of all time. he just writes music so fitting to whatever its featuring in, and it can be listened to out of context and still have such a powerful effect on you.

  • I dont know if I've already commented this, I probably already have, but which song from the 'Rob Roy' soundtrack is used in this clip? And the Alamo? Oh film soundtracks, who the hell needs pop music!

  • A SERIOUS MAN FTW

  • Great

  • At 3:00, oh yeah!!! His greatest hit ever!!!! God Bless you Carter Burwell!! :)

  • Bella's lullaby is ALL that comes up. Burwell is one of my favorite film composers

  • my favorite of all his work is In Bruges.

  • His best work is The Generals' Daughter...heart wrenching gut churning stuff.

  • love "the alamo" and "Conspiracy theory"--those're two of my faves. and you guys say he did "In bruges"? didn't know he did that--wow, i need to look that up again, love that insane flick.

  • WoW, the best song ever!

  • As evidenced by the score for Psycho 3 synthesized music was a bad idea.

  • love carter burwell!

  • Try going to his radio station via Carter's website. You might hear it because many of the selections are rare...Michael

  • anyone knows how to get his song of the movie : it takes two (1988)??

  • Didn't you notice the similarities between Fargo and Rob Roy?

Personally, I'm not a Carter Burwell fan, he's very restrained, though I did enjoy his score for The Hudsucker Proxy.

  • I clearly hear the similarity! :D But first after I read your comment... :D I'm a big fan of his work on The Twilight Score and Gods And Monsters - but I like Clint Mansell best... ;)

  • I don't think that the 'Fargo' and 'Rob Roy' themes are that similar however they are both very Burwellian (not surprisingly), and both have influence from Folksong, Norse and Gaelic respectively, and so that may be a reason that some see similarities in them.

  • You're right.

  • Where is Lady Killers songs?!

Ones of the best movies of Coen Brothers with 4.5 stars music

  • To be honest, even if people hate Twilight, the score for that movie is great. I'm not saying the movie is anything but average, but the score he really good.

  • The movie is pure trash, but the score is still being Carter Burwell, so is pure awesomeness.

  • Hey dude, you don't have any Micheal Nyman, or Clint Martinez, and Clint Mansel.

  • Where is his work on "The Rookie" (2002), thats his best job, imo, just wonderful texas folk music, as seen in parts of No Country for Old Men

  • He did the work on a Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger and that was one of my favorite soundtracks ever. It introduced me to him!

  • 7:20...

    Great cutting!

  • I hate looking up Carter Burwell and getting page after page of BELLA'S LULLABY TWILIGHT BELLA'S LULLABY TWILIGHT TWILIGHT

  • I couldn't agree more. I haven't seen twilight but I hate it for this fact alone.

  • Annoying isn't it... although it must be said his work on twilight is brilliant and this piece alone (type in Carter Burwell 'I know what you are') would work miracles in a thriller of some sort... It lifts the film to the proportions the teenie boppers want it to be. Fortunately he didn't work on its sequel man - CAN YOU TELL!

Ok i'll shut up now but i've been a CB fan since the Coen days and you can just tell when his mind is involved. Pure Genius.

  • I totally agree!!!!!

  • So do I

  • @theincrediblePenis calm the fuck down dude

  • @josswhedon692 Carter Burwell is one of my favorite composers. And while I agree it makes me angry to see him only credited for Twilight, he did some awesome music for it, such as: I Know What You Are.

  • @josswhedon692 exact same experience HAHA --search results-- me; "Are you serious?"

  • Fargo what a fn' good film ! So original and deep !

  • was that millers crossing one used on band of brothers at 5:19

  • Barton Fink, blood simple and Fargo always come back to me

  • My favorite score is from "The man who wasn't there" with billy bob thorton

  • How about 'The Gold' from 'Three Kings'. Shame that one ain't on Youtube

  • All time fav for me has and always will be from "Gods and Monsters."

  • you forgot left out his work in In Bruges

  • @QUINN1313

A million thumbs up for "you forgot left out his work in In Bruges"

  • @QUINN1313

    Yeah, that's a great one!

  • He did the score for HBOs Mildred Pierce and it is amazing!!

  • Carter Burwell... Un des plus talentueux compositeurs cinématographiques de toute l'histoire du 7e art...

  • My favorite Burwell Score has to come from the movie "It Could Happen to You" Great Score!!!

  • Î think the score he did for "before the devil knows you're dead" is extraordinary. does anyone know where to find it on youtube?

  • benydebney, thank you for making all of these Greatest Hits videos!! so many songs!

  • He seems to favor fiddles and such.

  • i loved film simone

  • Just found out he wrote the amazing guitar piece over the end credits in No Country For Old Men... breathtaking

  • What, no Doc Hollywood?

  • Bella's Lullaby is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

  • The only good thing about Twilight was Burwell's score.

  • Yes the music is amazing but I don't think it fits the Twilight Movie so well... Well Twilight Movie was a big whoops I think. Its gone in just what? One week?

  • It's still in theaters, with devout fans. I did not enjoy it.

  • i almost completely agree ;) the music practically made that movie.

  • The hoax has a nice beat! Love it. The Alamo was very sad but love the music! Barton Fink was cool with the ding in the back ground. BW2 was dark. Very cool! Fur was nice with the Piano! made it sound a little scary. A knights Tale was amazing@ I love that movie and the music just makes me love it more! That was my favorite music.

  • The movie is sappy, but I love Burwell's score to "It Could Happen to You." Any other fans?

  • That main theme from FARGO always give me the chills. It's terrific!

  • I just love the "fargo", "barton fink", "miller's crossing" and "being john malkovich" themes!

the "psycho III" is a little weird.

  • You can hear The General's daughter coming through clearly on Being John Malkovich...my second fave score from Carter Burwell. His genuis is second only to Ennio Morricone's and perhaps John Williams.

  • Good selection, though I can't help but lament the absence of IN BRUGES, which I truly hope nets Burwell an Oscar nomination next winter. Beautiful score.

Hearing the cut from GODS & MONSTERS, I definitely hear the resemblance to BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (right down to the chimes), but that doesn't take away from the beauty of either work.

  • Fargo and Gods and Monsters are my fav.

  • burwell's top5:

    1.Rob Roy

    2.Fargo

    3.A knight's tale

    4.Gods and monsters

    5.Barton Fink

  • Where's THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER? Though I'm a huge fan of Mr Burwell's work, notice how one could interpolate his cues from BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, GODS & MONSTERS and THE HI-LO COUNTRY and it would sound like the same theme? Hafta think that an editor used one for a "scratch" or "temp" track and the director fell in love with the cue. Either way, my vote for his best score goes to HI-LO COUNTRY, an entertaining and under appreciated flick directed by Stephen Frears.

  • Oh thank you...I can't belive noone has mentioned The General's Daughter. That score was incredibly moving and sad

  • Did you know that Don Davis and Carter Burwell also did the score for "A Goofy Movie"?

Possibly that's being saved for a Don Davis Greatest Hits video.

  • i heard he is composing music for the twilight movie. and he replaced robert pattinson's "lulaby"

hope he composed a good peice. he better not screw it up.

    lol

  • yah im kinda of afraid of that..but idk..i hope they still publish robs though

  • rob's music made it into the background music

    :D

  • really?

    wow.

  • actually rob´s lullaby was too long (5 minutes) and very slow so production decided to put another one, but rob has composed 2 songs of the twilight soundtrack

  • wait what? background in the movie?

  • Yeah, one of his songs, "Never Think" is on the soundtrack but his other songs are part of the movie, just not the lullaby. Dang it.

I'm just afraid that the lullaby won't live up to expectations. I mean--Carter's music is beautiful! I just worry if its not..err...right?

  • Barton Fink & Fargo....!!!

    BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • He certainly is pleasant to listen to! Thanks so much for posting! Now I want to get many of those, particularly Rob Roy, that sounds lovely. Didn't know he did Knight's Tale, that's really cool.

  • I don't like too much Carter Burwell's music. For me his best score is Rob Roy.

  • Conspiract Theory is awesome!

  • Blair Witch 2 is much better than "The Blair Witch Project" because it's more scarier and it has got more suspense

  • what's the title of the song from Psycho III? it's great, plz answer

  • title´s Maureen in the desert hope your pleased with the answer.:P

  • yes, thank you :) but I've already got it. There are two versions of this song, that's why it took me some time to find this second one :)
