Just got the books, spent the whole night reading the DMG. I was pretty skeptic at first but 4th ed seems like a really good game, lots of cool stuff.
Even tough 3.5 also rules, they're both great games.
I enjoyed reading the DMG its not a must have, but its the best DMG they made, I don't know about the cost. I think books should be around 30 USD is that what they are?
4E is gay as fuck. WotC has told all stores to send back their 3.5 books to increase sales of 4E. Hm, if they needed to do that, shouldn't that be a hint that 4E sucks?
Honestly I think they could've cut the book into the monster manual and cut down the buy in price for new GM's. If they were really going for adding new players to the hobby then bringing the price below $80+ would've been a good start.
The first DM's Manual was useful. The second DM's Manual seemed to be too simplified to be of much use to me. My friends that grew up on 2nd edition feel that is extreemly useful. I loved 3rd edition because I felt like I didn't have to buy the DM's Manual.
Things I found useful were random dugeon generator lists of herbs monsters and rooms etc, wilderness and getting lost, xp, fort building, henchmen, magic creation. The first had alot you could turn into story and game.

Ooohh! 4E mentality. There is just no place to get advice on running a good game (D&D or not). It's too bad there isn't some place where people could type questions for other people to read and reply with advice of their own to help you learn more about running a D&D game.... Oh wait, isn't that what forums are for (specifically GleeMax for D&D)?? And how cool is it that you can put an entire creature template on a post-it note? Looks like they won't need a "D&D for Dummies" book; it's the DMG!
my friends and i played for many years and kept playing 2nd edition when 3rd proved to be more trouble than it was worth. sadly we no longer play together. infact a couple of us have graduated to warcraft. its fun.. but jus not the same as hangin together.
Pen and paper are just a different animal. You don't have to wait for powers to get changed around, you don't have to wait for the authorities to realize people are cheating. It's all fixable on the fly, completely customizable, and leaves more room for everyone's imagination. There will always be room for pen and paper RPGs, whatever the brand.
I was a little worried about upgrading, having DM'd 3.0 for the last couple of years with house rules, but the more I hear and read about 4ed, the more it sounds like something I'd love to own and run.
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. This is the book I have been waiting for. Both the 3.0 and the 3.5 DMGs were not very n00b friendly. This one sounds like it has the advice and guidance to get you out the door as a DM and to help you DM well.
When they want more money they will crank out 5th edition

You don't need the DMG: just get the encounter building info, and you can build what you want with Players handbook and Monster Manual.

This dude is kidding himself. I can make a lich in about 15 minutes, right off the top of my head.
What's the big deal?

Why should they "look at things differently"? What was wrong with all the other jazz?
"Putting together a fun game for your players" - well what was the problem with the previous editions then, bud?

I'll stick with 1st edition. I still have 50 adventures to play first before I upgrade.

'Graduated' to WoW? I play WoW as much as the next gamer, but it's got nothing on a good game of D&D.
