How thick should your hearth be? I have a willow hearth and it's a little over a inch and a half.

There is no real rule as each bow-drill set is different. It depends on the moisture content of the wood, but for willow, I generally use a 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick hearth.
Keep practicing it is 99% determination that gets the results - don't give up!
