  • Thank you for sharing this video. Reinforces my doubts about Scent Lok.

The MythBusters television show ran a similar test but with even more strict standards in “de-scenting” the target. Full body wash, Tyvek suit, respirator mask, really sealed up the runner – didn’t faze that bloodhound either.

The take-away for me is better woodcraft and wind analysis rather than depending on gimmicks.

I think you have done a service for consumers in sharing this information.

  • Okay so if a bloodhound is after me i wont bother with my scent lok, but it cant hurt, and you need every advantage in the deer woods

  • @HuntersHeartTeam Not to mention hes only wearing base layers

  • good girl bonnie!

  • Beauiful animal! Go bonnie!

  • To everyone saying the guy sounds out of breath, have any of you ever walked a bloodhound locked on to a scent? My puppy is a workout in its self when i take him for walks in the woods.

  • I've read that a bloodhound's nose is far better than a deer's, does anyone know the stats on that?

  • you sound a lil out of shape there papy!

  • I've been involved with tracking dogs since 1967 first in vietnam and later with police tracking dogs and combat tracking in the USMC. This is a very good video proving that human scent cannot be masked. There are things that I could add but since we still have marines in the field i'll remain silent.

  • Blood hound FTW!!! Sure was exciting watching her catch that scent. She earned that treat, in 10 mintues!! BTW handler you're out of shape, looks like she's taking YOU for a walk heh

  • Scent lok keeps your scent from coming through the activated carbon. We don't know if the outside of any of the clothes were covered in his scent. Was every inch also sprayed with scent killer?

  • Just wanted to add....... Good girl Bonnie! Good Girl!

  • @GrizzlyMike1... The test is perfect, not flawed at all. Bloodhounds are utilized for tracking a Specific Scent, meaning you know who you are looking for. If you know who you are looking for then you should have a scent article. You may not know them personally, but even if they commited a crime - their scent is at the scene and you have it. Bloodhounds track the skin cells that are left behind, that's why a good "trained" bloodhound can almost always track a person down.

  • Nice job! I love tracking with my dogs. You should be proud of her!

I would like to add that discrimination is not specific to bloodhounds. My ScH and AKC titled dogs have to dicriminate as part of their tests, as their are cross tracks, especially at the VST level which are done in populated areas. This bloodhound is using air scent as well as "crushed vegetation", as you can see by watching her head. Again, super nice video and dog!

  • Good vid guys.

  • scentlok just lost a ten million dollar class action law suit. google it. people tired of being cheated. deer and deer hunting mag just did an independant lab study on scent eliminating sprays. the best was the original scent killer brand (now only found at wal mart due to its lack of popularity among the"pros". dead down wind finished dead last. always thought the old stuff worked better. bathe in ivory, wash clothes in baking soda, and hunt high! simple really.

  • THANK YOU.. This goes to further prove that this bogus crap that is scentlok and scentblocker is a huge waste of money... Play the wind people. :)

  • my blood hound followed me to a stand. i was wearing scent lok and rubber boots. sprayed the boots with scent killer after i got of the four wheeler. i was a mile from home where the dog was. but have not ever been busted by a deer in seven year with it thou

  • Scent-loc claims to eliminate human scent, bullshit! Thats why they were sued and lost in court.Nothing but away to get the money from hunters.Stay away for this company, they lie.

  • loved the vid great hound!!!!!

  • Very nice video, I enjoyed watching it. Nice dog, very nice. Thanks. Good luck.

  • Nose to the ground, tail in the air, great to watch a working dog! Are you self taught or have had tuition from an instructor? There is virtually only one Bloodhound breeder in my part of the world and he only sells you a Bloodhound if you agree not to do any trailing with it. No I'm not joking, it's like selling a car to someone on the basis they won't drive it.

  • Scent-Lok is a waste of money that would be better spent toward a new bow, new rifle, or a buttload of ammo. Great video!

  • This would be a great way to show the talents of Bloodhound SAR dogs as well. I like how she worked her way back after blowing a corner then as she got into the scent pool at 7:30 under the tree she shook of the scent and then looked up..she had him :0) Way to go Bonnie!

  • Unless scent-lok can keep the person from breathing, then the hound is going to locate the runner. Human scent comes off every part of the body, no way to eliminate that! I love to let folks wear their scent-lok clothes though and let my hound find them! WTG on disproving this product. You cannot hide from a correctly trained bloodhound, PERIOD. ;o)

  • This test flawed since the dog was already alerted to a specific scent to look for . Talk about a very bias/ tanted test

  • Of course the dog was given the scent to look for, that's how bloodhounds work. The POINT of the test is to find out if Scent-lok ELIMINATES your scent. Eliminate means to completely get rid of all traces of the wearers scent, which obviously did not happen, therefore, Scent lok's claims are FALSE.

  • @smaxwell1966 Was the rag of Scent Lok or just the subject?

I think that may be what grizzlymike was thinking.

  • I'm assuming that the rag your talking about was the scent article I gave her - that was to tell her whose scent I wanted her to find. The material was NOT Scent Lok, but was just the shirt that the runner wore the day before, with his human scent on it. So, according to Scent Lok's claims, the wearers human scent should be "eliminated" so there should be no human scent escaping through the Scent Lok clothing for the dog to find and use to trail the runner. Hope this helps.

  • @smaxwell1966 That IS what I was wondering. Thanks.

Looks alot like my hound. Mine isn't trained even tho she has a severely good nose.

    Great dogs!

  • @smaxwell1966 well the real question here woul dbe this did the target wearing the scent lok clothing use the recomended body wash and other odrer reducing materials that scent lok tells the user to use prior to puttin ght eclothing on? was the scent lok clothing properly washed and placed in a scent free tote and only put on in the woods? did he clean and spray his boots with scent killer? did he also take car to not break branches and things like any good well trained hunter knows?

  • @JCrain03 Yes to all questions, Showered with scent free / scent killer soap, washed clothes in the scent killer detergent, clothes placed into an airtight plastic bag, put on at the start of the trail to avoid any contamination from the pickup truck ride, wore rubber boots. All clothing, boots, etc was sprayed down with the scent spray. The only thing he didn't do was worry about breaking twigs, as the dog trailed him one full hour later. The dog doesn't look for or listen for snapped twigs.

  • @GrizzlyMike1 You would do well to read some good info on tracking/man trailing. There is a point to giving the dog a scent to look for. Otherwise the dog is just "tracking" only and not man trailing.

  • Im from the city in Cali and never owned a Bloodhound, olny American Bulldogs, so Thats was amazing to me. Ive been thinking about getting one but i dont hunt so idk if that would fair to the dog. Either way great job!

  • You sound outta shape man. haha Great demo. I am not sure if the dog was tracking the disturbed grass or the actual scent of the man. Try this after 6 hours then 12 hours. Of course, I would hate being the guy waiting. haha

  • It was the scent. Bloodhounds senses are dominated by the nose!

  • A bloodhound is not a deer. Those dogs can smell cancer INSIDE YOUR BODY (!!)... I have had great success with scent control clothing & sprays... ON DEER. nuf sed.

  • There is a reason scent loc is getting is ass sued off. It's a fraud. I haven't been using it for years and have had plenty of deer down wind that didn't scent me. Get in on the lawsuit and get some of your money back.

  • i dont believe that scent lok works 100%, which was proven here, but if you use it combined with the body washes and the sprays your chances of getting winded are greatly reduced. i've been using it for years and i've had plenty of deer walk downwind and never wind me. another thing is, in many parts of the US deer are used to a certain amount of human scent so if they smell a very minimal amount they wont spook. no matter how careful you are about scent you should always play the wind.

  • scent shield/lox is way over rated, sorry realtree boys

  • i did this with my dog with the scent away spray it actually worked until I accidentaly moved and made some noise then she found me.

  • I feel for you. Trying to hold a video and record while holding back a hound dog on a trail. I've never owned a bloodhound, but I had a walker mix. If he got on a scent trail, I had to hold onto his leash for dear live

You did a good job, also she's a beautiful dog. Well done. 5/5

  • Trailing dogs are scent discriminating and require a scent article from the subject, and follow the indviduals scent path. The bloodhound is the prototypical Trailing dog.

Tracking dogs will follow ground disturbance using non-human scent (eg, crushed vegetation, mushed bugs,)in following the subject's movements as in sporting type events such as AKC and Schutzhund Tracking. Tracking dogs do not scent discriminate between individuals as Trailing dogs do.

  • It was so cool watching her use her nose.I told my buddy Scent -lok was overpriced garbage years ago. After he watched this vid..now he believes me

  • Bloodhounds are bred to track people. A good one will do it instintcually, just like a retreiver will retrieve or a pointer will point without being trained to do so. The handler must learn to read the dog though and know if the dog in tracking, goofing off, confused or distracted. That is the real key.

  • how do you train them to do that?

  • Also not mentioned is the fact that a GOOD dog will not only lock onto a persons scent, but also the smell of the broken grass where your boots made contact, as well as the fresh earth scent from the disturbed soil surface where you step! The scent lock MINIMIZES human scent, it does not eliminate it!

  • Some dogs are trained to follow the scent you are talking about, called of "ground disturbance", however my dog does not do this. I know this because 1) The dog has to be trained to do that, dogs do not naturally follow the scent of broken grass and squished bugs 2) I have run many successful trails in the city, where the dog passed by or crossed the trail of dozens, if not hundreds of people, on concrete sidewalks and ashphalt streets to get to and ID the person we were trailing. They are cool!

  • A search and rescue or Schutzand dog, will, but a GOOD Bloodhound wont. The are trained to only follow the scent of a specific person, barring everything else. This is called scent discrimination. I can take twenty different people out to the woods with me and have them fan out and she will only track the person whose scent I give her.

  • @smaxwell1966 That skill is not breed specific, I have a Belgian Malinois that will do the exact same thing as this blood hound will. It is dependent upon the training they receive. This bloodhound was doing a combination of tracking/trailing. There is a difference. Also if you will notice she is air scenting as well as putting nose to the ground. The obvious sign of a good tracking/trailing dog.

  • The Bloodhound has an awesome nose, I trained 2 for mantrailing both were fantastic, the female could get a mans scent if conditions were right from a hundred yards or more (Wind light, and in right direction, cool temp, and a slight mist in the air). My male once tracked a 28 hour old trail, really cool!

  • that was badass! loved it!

  • Hoping to have our first bloodhound in a couple months. We feel like expectant parents! Bonnie's a real good girl. Fun to watch her do her thing...

  • Good dog, I love mine. best dog I've ever owned. The sure do love finding things with that nose.

  • Great tracking clip mate.

  • your dog is beautiful...and she did a good job...but 10 minutes is soooo long time which makes it a little boring...

  • shit u dont need that scentlok garbage, i took a piss under my stand this year and climbed up my stand and 45 minutes later the biggest buck of my life come from down wind right under my stand and i harvested him deer do have a great sense of smell and can deffinately detect humans, but no matter what u do u will never fool their nose, if the deer want to come in they will

  • Last I checked, Scent Lok doesnt make sneakers, which could have something to do with how easily the dog tracked him. Test is totally BS due to improper use of product.

  • Subject was wearing rubber boots, sprayed down with a generous amount of carbon spray. Clothes were put on wearing rubber gloves. All Scent Lock was reactivated per manf. instructions the night before and were sealed in plastic bag until they were put on in the field at the start of the test. Subject showered 30 min before test, using scent free soap and shampoo. Scent free deodorant was used. Underwear and socks were washed in scent free detergent and also sealed in plastic since night before.

  • Sure Sure, if you say so.

  • This test doesn't prove that scent lok doesnt work. Yes it does prove that Bloodhounds have an incredible sense of smell (10 million-100 million times more sensitive than a humans). But for practical purposes like deer hunting (Deer's noses are only 100 times more sensitive than a humans) Scent Lok does work. I did this same test with my yellow lab.

  • I first wore ordinary clothes with no scent prevention and she found me no problem. I then showered with scent killer, used rubber boots with scent killer and put on my Scent Lok gear and went into the woods. My lab never found me, and according to the person helping me with the test, never even got on a trail. A lab is no bloodhound, but I would assume it's nose is comparable to a deer, and i am not hunting bloodhounds so my Scent Lok will do just fine.

  • Nice job! Nothing can replace good hunting tactics, and a big part of that is hunting with the wind in your face!

  • shes a great looking hound. really nice markings.

  • No zr2PK your just a cheap fuck,

  • i think scent lock is a bunch of BS. nice camo though. i just use scent killer spray on my cheap ass walmart camo when i bow hunt. ive had deer walk under me and not detect me.

  • Thats was great! Thanks for sharing this with us. Very interesting.

  • Do you think it would have been easier for the hound to find him if he had not been wearing scent lok...or would it be the same level of difficulty regardless?
