  • @ZamaSoldier. You can kill a turkey with buck shot but it would be a lot easier to use turkey shot than shooting it 3 times and you would need to have a turkey choke on the end of the gun.

  • Great video, i was watching this while hunting turkeys in theHunter. :D

  • will just regular shotgun shells work on killin turkey. i keep hearing something like a "turkey shot" or something. any ideas

  • Got my gobbler this morning!

  • its spring turkey in vermont right now, i missed my chance to get one this morning, but im damn sure i can get him tomorrow morning. its a blast anyway. its my second love. people that wanna try hunting birds. its a blast and i recommend it to anyone. great video, helped me out some. Goodluck to all you hunters out there. go murder that gobbler!

  • Great video!!! Can you explain why the turkey would make those different sounds (cutting ,purring, yelp ect.) and when you would use them. Thanks so much.

  • good stuff well done

  • Excellent! Thanks for posting. I enjoyed how you explained and demonstrated several different calls.

  • its eather a glass or a slate lol

  • Hi thanks for watching my video....I normally use just two hen decoys..here in Mo Ive seen a tom or jake decoy actually scare of a less dominant gobbler...Yes it doesnt scare them all but it will a few. Thats my opinion.

  • Hi great video and I live in Minnesota and how many decoys is good I was thinking two hens one Tom im not sure what do you think is good? (its my first year) Thanks

  • Its probably a double reed split v...Thats one of my favorites to use. I cant remember what brand that one was...I started out using HS Struts mouth calls they are good and can be found at most wal marts,

  • what mouth call are you using in this vid. and whats a couple of real good ones

  • I just got a primo ol' betsy slate call for christmas it has a wooden striker. How much pressure should I apply to get a good sound? Do I need to press hard or really light? I'm having a hard time getting sound out of it. I'm a beginner upcoming spring will be my first year.

  • @grillmasterjim Just use as much pressure as you would use to write with a lead pencil on a piece of paper...If you are doing it right you can make the same sounds by pressing hard or soft just louder or quieter...make sense?

  • @likinmo yeah thanks alot! And thanks for the cool videos. Really helpful!

  • How far away does a turkey have to be to hear the call? and i really enjoyed the video!

  • @winkelman64fan Well it depends..if theres wind not as far...but ive called turkeys and they responded as far as 1/4 mile or so. Thanks for watching!

  • Hey thanks alot Greg! been taking my 11 year old son turkey hunting starting this Fall and he is loving it! We are using a Genesis compound bow and slate caller.

  • with the slate, use the call with or against the grain you created with the sandpaper?

  • Tanks for the tips....great video

  • I live in Minnesota how much should icall in like the mornings and evenings? alot or a little?

  • @bikar13 I think that I would call more in the morns because most birds want to group up as soon as they come off the roost...they want to meet their neighbor so to speak..LOL.....and in the eves just some light soft calling should do the trick...hope this helps go get em!!

  • I keep running into turkeys on the farm in OH. I figured it was about time to get one, but I'd never seen these calls in action before. You're video was exactly what I needed, thanks brother!

  • @Pertusetian Thanks man!!

  • do you want to use coarse sandpaper or the fine stuff, cause im going turkey hunting for the first time and im trying to learn the most i can by next weekend

  • @tkoboxer23 If your using a brand new slate I would ruff it up the first time with a ruffer paper then a fine grit will work fine after the first initial ruff up.....I hope that helps ya! Good luck

  • Thanks Greg I did find it helpfull....as a new Bow hunter and Turkey hunter...all the hints people have been giving me and my boy have beeen very helpfull....thanks

Youth day in wmz 21 here in maine on saturday so, Bo is gonna hit the blind and see what he can come up with....your demo has given us some good ideas thanks

  • Ooorah88 I found that Jake decoys turn off toms I've had Toms turn around as soon as they looked at it and walked back into the pines

  • A double sided lynches box call sounds way better

  • It was just my opinion man chill out

  • @Fearyourgovernment No problem Im as chilled as I can be....One bird in the fridge and going for number two tommorrow!

  • that box doesn't sound very good

  • @Fearyourgovernment HMM after 112,000 views your the first one thats said that...ILL try to make it sound better next time for you!!

  • thank you!

  • thanks, good tips. It's less than 24 hours to go in Ontario, and I'm looking forward to seeing my first gobbler "blowed up".

  • awesome video thanks

  • do u have any tips on late season turkey hunting? i'm using a primos "the freak" with crystal and the primos power owl. I also have a jake decoy with two hens, what is the best way to use decoys to my advantage?

  • i bet ur pumped. your turkey season starts in 4 days. i've been seein alotta gobblers. how bout you?

  • @huntingisthelife12 Im really ready to hunting its been a long winter....very tough on our flocks! Its going to be a ruff season I think its been 3 bad hatches in a row..

  • @likinmo yes it has been tough took my cousin out today and not even a gobble.. not even on the roost i was bummmed but ik they are there so im gonna keep at it. but im savin my really good spot for may 1st, any luck so far?

  • well our youth in NY is 24-25 so i am takin my cousin and friend. our regular season starts may 1st

  • Thank you much, as a beginner turkey hunter this video was really helpful. Good hunting. God Bless

  • thanks dude im pretty good at getten the right sound i just never know what sound to use next

  • i prefer a slate call i got one and it sounds really good ive never used a box call and prolly will stick to my slate cause ive had really good luck with it

  • whats the turkey season in missouri??

  • @huntingisthelife12 Starts april 19th and goes 3 weeks

  • wow, ours in south carolina last the whole month of april. the 1st through the 30th

  • Youth season is April 11 - 12th, so take a kid... Birds seem to be alot more fired up in there season too. We always see some crazy stuff on the youth weekend.

  • do you have to sand the slate everytime before you call?

  • @augTard No Just listen to the sound of the call if it starts sounding bad or you cant get good friction with your striker its time to sand

  • My dad has the very last one, and he's having trouble on it. Good job though, you convinced him to by the first one :)

  • i got my first bird, callin him in with that same single sided box call

  • @nanihwaiyaboi15 u might have sanded it to much

  • you cant break it really lol....try holding it at i different angle or pressing harder of lighter or something and hold the striker twords the bottom more

  • is that the primos boxcutter box call? it looks just like mine

  • How are you holding the striker? do not hold it straight up and down. Try rotating it at different angles until u produce the sound you are looking for. Try lookin on google or something for different instructions that can help you.

  • nice job explaining to the lay person...very interesting!

  • i got a triple diaphram call

  • awesome mouth call im 12 and i got my first one today do you think you could make a vid on the, quaker boy foam fit easy double, thats the one i got

  • the diaphram is my favorite to

  • Is it possible to drop a turkey at 10 yards with twelve gauge non-magnum #4 shot loads through an improved cylinder barrel?

  • Most definately!!! It just takes 1 pellet landing in the right spot....Go get em!!

  • awesome, dude. you're great on that mouthpiece.

  • great video! with the slates, have you ever tried a plexi glass striker? works real good on the glass top slates.

  • awesome video i love to call with a box and diaphram

  • Ya that was a Jackpot slate. I go through one a year. I crack everyone usually its because I smash them in my turkey vest.

  • Great tips man!!! was that 1st slate style glass call you had, was it a Primos Jackpot glass? I had one of them, worked great but it got wet one day and I guess the wood swelled and it cracked. I now have me athe new H.S. Strut RingZone, starfir crystal, works great also. Once again, great vid, and it deserves 5 stars!

  • thanks for the vid good tips good luck next year..

  • hey am trying to us a mouth call but i cant get it to sound ever god any tips

  • say the word chick for a yelp and te chuck for a putt

  • good video nice way to present the slate calls and the different hand motions for different calls

  • wow u r a beast on a diphram i wish i was that good what do u usualy say when u yelp and pur?

  • i gotta tell you man your slate call K&H Ol' Yellar is prolly the best call ever made. i've killed numorous birds with my one slate call that i started with.

  • but nice vid man thanx i was calling this morning in te gully just souting heard a tom near ill try that with my box call ty

  • i live in ontario canada in the country i got a tent on my grandfathers hey field nothing yet so far but almost got a 27 pound tom he had a massive beard

  • wow this really helps I'm going on Saturday by my self and I'm kinda worried about calling because of i use i box call and I'm afraid of calling a turkey in and pulling my gun up and scaring the turkey away. But thanks for the tips there gonna help alot

  • Thank you for good descriptions on the box, slate and diaphragm call. Good video for beginning turkey callers

  • Thanks for the great video, it really helped.

  • One of the only 9:00 videos I've watched every second of. As a deer hunter trying my hand at turkey for the first time, this was very informative and concise. Awesome vid man.

  • That's not shocking.

  • Good One!! LOL!

  • Hey guys I do love teaching how to turkey hunt!

  • Hi thx for the tips. They just opened up this hunt up in Quebec last year and im trying it this season .

    Thx for the advices

  • thank you. this is probably the best video on turkey calling ive seen. nice oneand good luck in the field

  • Have fun!! Thanks for the compliment!

  • Thanks for the video! I'm just starting to learn about turkey hunting, and this was really helpful

  • Thanks for making this video, it's just what I've been looking for! Great job, keep'um comin!

  • You cant teach through a video mouth calling you can only try to immulate what you here. Press firmly with your tongue and let off as you blow....I try to make the sound KEOWK...Its hard to teach technique...Just leave a call in your mouth and practice.

  • ok thanks

  • nice video, just one question, what do you do for the clucks witht he mouth call, i cant get them right

  • the way i learned how to cluck was to try and say PUCK witha very quick burts of air. do not try to put a lot of tongue pressure on the reed(s). good luck.

  • kk ty

  • Thanks for doing different calls back-to-back so we can hear the difference.

  • Great Video. Thank you!

  • thanks for your help i'm a beginning turkey hunter and ur video was real helpful

  • Very nice demo. Very informative thanks

  • Thanks for the nice comment! Go getcha one!!

  • awesome video!!

  • so which way do you put the reed in your mouth, i do diffrent and dont know if its right i put the reed torwards my trought and suck, i know i have almost sollowed the call before, but i have also called some in, i have scared more than i have called

  • The open end of the reed goes to the front of your mouth....you deff. don't need to be sucking on the call. You should be forcing air under the call. Normally this can be done by trying to say words such as put, cluck, chirp, chip, chick, etc.

  • Yes dont suck on the call or you might swallow it. The latex goes towards your front teeth! Then you press firmly with your tongue and blow and as you blow let off so slightly. KEOWK is the sound you want!

  • great video. gets me psyched for the turks

  • good tips thanks, slates i find are most realistic in sound and box calls do carry farther in distance so I bring em both and a hen decoy.

  • Good Vid....Openin day so I'm off right now

  • Please look at my video titled "Gander and Turkey Fight." I literally trip over wild turkeys! Thanks...Kathy

PS...I can't look at them being shot, so can't watch full video...Sorry!

  • I would go with a double reed split v cut.

  • I agree, and expanded on your reply.

Good information in your video, I forwarded it to my wife, a second-year turkey hunter. Keep it up, maybe decoy placement or flock behavior?

What's a "blowed-up" gobbler? I don't think we have those in Northern Missouri.

  • a blowed up gobbler is a turkey thats just struttin

  • I know what he meant...I was being what you may describe a facetious, illustrating the differences in northern and southern vernacular.

  • o ok.i didnt know if you were or not.ive met people here in tennessee who dont what a blowed up gobbler is

  • what kind of mouth call would you recommend for a begginer

  • I like Primos and Knight&Hale brands. Both have good waterproof tape and "playable" latex. It flexes well, and doesn't take a lot of pressure from the tongue to change tones.

Get good at a two reed call before you try crazy cuts or 3/4 reed calls.

Practice until you can make CLEAR calls QUIETLY, then go hunting with it. Otherwise, you might find it to be too loud, scaring off birds of all kinds.

  • One thing I would say is keep a call in your mouth for hours at a time and practice practice practice!

  • hey great advise i have a couple box calls and aluminum calls but i have been trying to learn how to mouth call for awhile you have any extra tips to help me out?

  • Man thats great Im glad you had success at one the best sports in the world!! Hunting! Keep gettin em!!

  • just want to let you know last fall I took your advise to buy a box call if I was a beginner, so I stopped at the local hunting shop bought a license and a box call and had a turkey by noon, should have tried turkey hunting yrs ago what a blast!!! Thanks!

  • I hope it helps you kill the biggun this year!!

  • I've been playing with my calls so much this past month my wife is about to knife me... haha I use a slate and mouth diaphram but this is a good video, thanks for putting it up.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I was practicing with my new slate call while watching the video as a reference.

  • I really got smarter...:-)

    Thankes!

  • thanks man that helped out alot. im new to turkey hunting but im learning fast

  • PRetty good video, thanks for putting something out there that's actually helpful for new hunters. I've been hunting for years & this is one of the better instructional videos I've seen. You have your mouth calls down pretty good.

  • thnxz i just started hunting this year and i didn't relly know what i was doing

  • Great video...definately go with the double, i bought the triple to start and it was difficult. Just ask my wife about all the practicing i had to do...:) She was ready to kill me. Really good instructional video man !!!!

  • paulh25....the key thing to calling turkey is not to over call him....if he is gobbling everytime you call and 3 or 4 times in between your calling hes hott!!!he will come dont over call make him find you.....if hes hott he will look for ya just give him a little call every 2-4 mins and he will come!!!

  • thanks

  • If the bird is gobbling his head off do you call a lot to get him to come your way - call sparingly to let him know you're there and not scare him or what? I had one gobbling in the woods (est 75 yards although I couldnt see him) he just kept walking on past - gobbling all the way -grrr! I called some just to act hard to get but now I think it wasnt enough. Thanks for the video.

  • wow this is really good!

  • This is awesome for us newbees. Thanks.

  • im from st.james mo. where are you from

    in missouri.

  • Licking

  • o i go fly fishing down by there at lane springs and im going to the rodeo down there next weekend

  • Try hunting at Reifsnider State Forest in Warren Co...I killed 4 gobblers there in three years when I lived in Warrenton.

  • what is the intro music?

  • Switchfoot!

  • hey i have a question with the mouth call.

i just bought mine and i cant fingure out how to use it

  • Put in your mouth for awhile untill you get used tom the feel of it. Till you dont gag anymore. Start by pressing with your tongue on the call . Press it to the roof of your mouth then blow air over it. You want to make a keowk sound. Start out with a higher pitch and bring the pitch lower by depressing your tongue ever so slightly. Hope this helps alittle. Go kill ya one!

  • hey thankx for the tip but one more question. like what part of the piece do i put my toungue on and would you prefer a single reed instead of a double if you were new to this sutff

  • press your tongue up against the rubber reed and i would use a double reed. Good luck

  • This Video Is Great. I Looked All Over The Internet Trying To Find Something To Help Me With Calling. Great Job.

  • Nice work thank you!

  • Good video. this will be my 3rd year bird hunting...still birdless but this year is the year I hope...cant get the cuttin down good with box or slate yet thats what i need to work on for this year...

  • thanks

  • how much time do you have between each call

  • Leave about 5-10 mins between calls.

  • thanks for the great video. Missouri has to have the best turkey in the country. you got me ready to take some birds this year.

  • Thanks for the tips, I am getting ready to take my son for the youth hunt saturday here in missouri, and I have never been before so this was very helpful.

  • good tips

  • Some great advice there. Thanks!

  • dude thanks so much ive killed 2 turkeys with my dad calling for me but im finally old enough to go out by myself so i plan on calling my own in for the first time this helped alot :)

  • Awesome!!... Am planning to go for my very first turkey this year... learned a lot here. I'm a novice in the true sense of the word, so wish me luck!

    AB - Manitoba Canada

  • Thank you sir. Your video was very educational. It's hard to learn this stuff from anyone out here in southern tree hugging california. Good to see I was doing somethings right and learned a few things also.

  • lil over 2 weeks till season im super excited like every season bee sein tons of birds strutin already...in missouri!

  • Thanks alot man this is a great instructional video for beginner callers and intermediates like myself. Please Keep Posting!!!

  • Thanks Go shoot you a 12 incher!!

  • Dude - thanks! You should be on Versus or Outdoor Channel. Those guys suck compared to you! It is hard to find good examples of solid calls with all types of calls without paying alot of money for stuff that is not proven!

  • Thanks for the comments guys! I was an episode of AWAY outdoors at XMAS but I was running the camera not in front. I really like doing these videos though. Good huntin!

  • Awesome!!!!!

new turkey hunter hear in Louisiana appreciates you. I have killed 4 total, but all in Texas w/ rifle. That was kinda fun, but I'm hooked on getting one w/ shotgun during spring in LA. Thanks for the help, it doesn't go un-noticed!

  • thanks bro, really helpful, you should keep more hunting vids coming do you have any more???

  • Ive got six on here right now!! Thanks

  • Great instructional video! I have been hunting for several years and i still pick up tips from others like yourself. Im a missourian myself i and know exactly what you mean about all the rain. Using a mouth call i have a problem keeping it soft. Any tips on how to? I know using less air but i still seem to be to loud.

  • One thing is keep your lips closed as much as possible and you could keep your hands over your mouth.Plus if you need to be that soft you prolly shouldnt be calling anyway...maybe a putt or purr thats it!! Good huntin!

  • Thanks alot.Excellent video from someone not trying to sell me something.Good honest help.Good Hunting from Texas.

  • Thanks, you have the best video on YouTube for turkey calling tips! Please add more!

  • Is it April 21st yet?!?!?

  • Hey thanks I appreciate the nice comments. It really means alot to me. Im going to be coming out with my locator video in a few days be looking for it!
