The big crunch as been refuted and dismissed for the most part.
The acceleration of the universes expansion negates the "bounce" Hawking himself says this as well.

maybe you can link me to this quote by hawking's. Ive been entertaining the idea's of the demise of the universe allot lately. A closed system like the big crunch makes the most sense to me. But of course I could be wrong. I haven't seen any of my favorite physicist or cosmologist tackling this question.

hawking isnt the god of science. just because he says something it isnt so. hawking radiation can be observed. that is why it is a fact not opinion. and this acceleration has only occured during the time we have been studying it. nothing in the universe is static not even the speed of light.

Ya atheism has nothing to do with cosmology. It is more to do with different criterion's of evidence or sometimes, in the case of Hitchens' anti-theism, rejection of the morality of theism.
