if you get a chance, try the green sapotes (different from lucuma), and the canistel (egg fruit)-- sapotes which are very, very good in their own ways.

I once had a similar experience with rum balls one Christmas. They were mostly healthy ones with dates and carob etc but they had been soaked in rum and I thought they had been cooked and weren't alcoholic anymore. But they were raw... and very intoxicating!
