@skeymoson He indeed did. He even admits it. He listed to Sam ONLY for at least 2 years...even gargled a solution to make his voice more raspy, just like Sam.
@jay1beaux It was actually written by John Marascalco along with Leo Price. John wrote several songs for Little Richard and other performers. The cover I like best is Buddy Holly's. He was the second to record this after Little Richard. Hank Jr. did a great version too.
Wait, are you saying Johnny Mathis? Is he known as a soul singer? I don't know. Nat king Cole is one of my favorite singers of all-time so is Mel Torme, but I wouldn't classify either of them as soul singers.
@archy2frank2 .Well my opinion was not necessarily based on the artist's soul or rmb status.....it was based primarily on "popular music" genre.....withstanding that i don't consider classical or opera "pop" music.....however, based upon the background of a natking, mel or a Roy, in that where they started from......I will have to include them in this line-up......what do you think?
@tat3001 Ok this my personal top 10. 1. Luther Vandross 2. Marvin Gay 3. Otis Redding 4. Ray Charles 5. Sam Cooke 6. James Brown 7. Stevie Wonder 8. Michael Jackson 9 Al Green 10. Teddy Pendergrass.
@archy2frank2 I'll explain mine #1.sam-because , you can very well argue that his era produced probably the best singers of all time, however his raspy yet smooth vocals in my opinion transcends him over the others.2stevie- in my opinion stevie is the greatest ARTIST of all time, the fact that his vocal range is so powerful(even seated), notwithstanding that he's playing the piano while being blind is incomparable.3luther 4brian 5mathis 6wanye(boys to men) 7natking 8michael 9royhamilton 10peabo

lol well i tell ya my dear marvin is one of my favories too.and i respect your choice.sam leaving us so early didnt give us the opportunity to how he would evolved over a course of time through musical changes whereas we saw how marvin adjusted.little willie john is a favorite of marvins . sam and jackie always acknowledged his talent but somehow his contributions to music were forgotten.check him out.he deserves a crown too.once again yougot good taste i might need to keep in touch with you
@MadSkeelz16 Little Richard did record this first--about 1958. Sam recorded it in the early 60s. Of course Sam Cooke had on of the most beautiful voices ever, but Little Richard did a good job. I believe that Little Richard wrote it also.
i love singing to this great great great song R.I.P. Sam Cooke we you may not be here but your still in our memorises and hopefuly your music will live on for generations to come on
Please somebody, send me some lovin - damn if he ain't sing the shiggity out of this cut. What a beautiful voice. I wasn't born until 1969, but I have older sibblings who wore out a bunch of Sam Cooke 45s when I was growing up. Can you imagine the choir that consists of Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin, Al Wilson, Richard 'Dimples' Fields, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and so many more????
@xxrosietxx you got that right .sam is the original. the best at what he did in his own style.put sam on a stage with steve and steve would be in a world of trouble.good point buddy.
@TheSoulman44 - ur right Sam is the Best of the Best. But I still like Steve and he has always said that he takes his style of singing from Sam Cooke. I mean he has to give him his props, you cant help but hear that familiar raspyness.
@Taami oh yes mam no doubt, sam style is quite a foundation for everybody to learn and build on from steve to rod to otis johnnie taylor marvin david ruffin smokey aretha the list literally goes on and on that says a lot about the value of his talent and the impact and influence it had on the world of music. and its wonderful these artists acknowledge him.i see you have great taste in music my friend. may god bless you.
@TheSoulman44 - Oh Mr. Soul Man you just dont know. I LOVE the artist of old. Sam's voice is just so relaxing. But of course my ALL Time Fav is none other than Marvin Gaye. As much as I love Sam, Marvin is by far THE GREATEST... EVER! EVER! EVER!......... Did I mention, EVER!!
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
Man, this sounds like an ice cream cone with "sprinkles" on a hot, summer afternoon. What a gift from God this man & his voice was. It ended way way too soon.
The trouble with the world is not having, not sharing, not loving enough. Have you hugged someone today. Love always builds up, doesn't tear down. Love heals all things, bears all things, Love is the answer.
Damn he just had an incredible voice. A nice tone but raspy, but still sweet with clarity...plus his melisma is crazy...the way he floates through notes like in the words "pray", "away", "dear", "are near" "still feel"...etc...that's gospel training right there...and those "ohs and ahs"...just incredible. It makes an old, rather boring standard song like this very interesting.
Why is everything a black / white thing / If you can really appreciate great music it does not matter! This is pure heart felt music and that`s all that counts!
howdy,69 yo black grandpa-32 yo lady you are so right-this guy sings and you can understand every word--just great-there will never be another like him
@mxxxmcg. I concede that art is too subjective a term to debate so let just say that any songwriter that uses the words "motherf-----, bitch, shit" and worse is not worth researching. If I can't understand the lyrics on the radio because its all just a series of censoring bleeps then its not worth listening to. If I can't sit with my boys and enjoy a song because they would get grounded if they sang along, well then to me, its not worth anything.
Sam Cooke was the best in his field no impersonaters can come anywhere near to him, it been a long time coming to find someone with a sound like Sam Cooke

much respecto for people who listen to Heavy Metal, for instance. Probably it's possible to feel the music and to be touched be it in your heart listening to Heavy Metal(i repeat, i say Heavy Metal for instance, nothin particular against this kind of music), but, why listening to other music, when you can hear it raw, directly from Sam's voice, or Otis's, or Aretha's, Simone's...and many many other black soul singers ? i like hip-hop, but when i listen to soul music, i deny of it
Thanks to my mom playing this around the house when I was little, I grew up to appreciate Sam and the music of this era. I went to h.s. and college in the 80s and I'm so thankful that my mom gave me this gift. I am now trying to do this with my young son. He's already noticing songs and making "requests". I just put it on in the house and in the car and just let his little ears enjoy just as I did.
Well, here we are...folks lucky enough to remember this man's music are truly blessed to be able to hear the pure sound and feel of soul.... everything he sang was from the inner spectrum that only great singers have....but, the newer generation should listen and compare his style and genius with the singers of today.....very few, if any, can compare to this standard of music....
Well, I find Little Richard's original version is more funky rock'n roll, and Sam's cover is more soulful. Both are the masterpieces of the geniuses of the era.
such ah legend and such ah sad and confusing ending i know up to this day no one realy know who and wat was responsible for realy killing him but i know God knows and a change is gonah come!
@pinky8465 my cousin sounded just like him......but growing up i didnt who Sam Cooke was....discovered him in 1998.....I heard my cousin 100%.......he must have been a Sam fan.
This is the first time I heard Sam Cooke's version of this song. I always liked Little Richard's version which is more Bluesy. This is very nice and smooth.... typical Sam Cooke.
I am a 32 year old white female and Sam's music is always on my playlist and my kids' ipods. People like 'lil wayne and drake are not 'artists' they are entrepreneurs. They sell a product....but it is not art.
GOOD FOR YOU. YOU SAY YOUR KID'S HAVE SAM ON THEIR I PODS AND THAT'S A GOOD THING.
WE NEED TO BRING BACK REAL MUSIC THAT IS FILLED WITH LOVE AS OPPOSED TO A BUNCH OF NON-SENSE BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN IN LOVE.
IF LITTLE WAYNE AND THE REST OF THOSE PEOPLE HAD REAL LOVE THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO SING ABOUT IT. BUT THEY CAN'T BECAUSE THEY HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED IT SO THEY HAVE NO PASSION WHEN THEY SING.
@eenafit Well said. Although I'm not sure about the definition of "art", it does seem as though the main focus of today's artists is money, where as in years past...it was music.
@eenafit while you have to respect some music as classic like sam's, I think you are making a generalization here. If you listen to some songs by Drake you will find that there is meaning to them and he is expressing issues he feels strongly about. Whether that is what you find beautiful or not does not make it a "not and art form." I don't think you have done enough research into all the music of wayne and drake to label all that they release as an artless product.
@eenafit Right on. I am a 34 year old black man and I love this music as much as you do. I agree with you too. Lil' Wayne and Drake are not artists, they are just tools for capitalism exploiting music to sell junk. Sam Cooke may be long gone, but his music has a lot of originality and class to it.
By the way, Sam Cooke was one of the best dressed men in history, and I follow his styles. Not to mention if you saw me dressed in a suit and tie, you could mistake me for Sam Cooke!
@eenafit You are telling the truth...I'm 35 and I'm so grateful that my mother turn me on to Sam when I was young and my kids also love his music...I totally agree with you....
This song sung by Sam is absolutely beautiful..........Thank you for posting very much appreciated...........

much respecto for people who listen to Heavy Metal, for instance.

SCREW THE 5 PEOPLE WHO DISLIKE THIS SONG

Well, here we are...folks lucky enough to remember this man's music are truly blessed to be able to hear the pure sound and feel of soul.... everything he sang was from the inner spectrum that only great singers have....but, the newer generation should listen and compare his style and genius with the singers of today.....very few, if any, can compare to this standard of music....

Well, I find Little Richard's original version is more funky rock'n roll, and Sam's cover is more soulful. Both are the masterpieces of the geniuses of the era.

@eenafit
MIMI88998899 1 year ago
@eenafit Well said. Although I'm not sure about the definition of "art", it does seem as though the main focus of today's artists is money, where as in years past...it was music.
KrfNYC2 1 year ago

@eenafit why do you say you are a "32 year old white female"? Is that relevant? Or are you selling something?
