Forget a memory card, actual o.s., usb ports and any way to expand memory or hook up external devices.... what i want is something really thin... so if I can't fit ports or memory cards , thats okay ... as long as I can have smooth scrolling, plenty of apps, facetime, retina display (someday) & an Apple on the back ... thats all I need... that is good enough for business and play.

Reason for low battery is because it is windows 7...tablets are basically netbooks with touch input...nothing more special....

Have you actually used one. I used to think like you until I used one and I knew why people would think of it as a success. And the slate may have "more features" but the damn slate is laggy, unresponsive, and all it is a big netbook without the keyboard. Use one then you'll see the nightmare that HP has overcharged. The iPad is worth the money. Oh and the sales are exceeding Apple's expectations. Sales for other similar tablets are low. :-)

@mdtrue Wrong, try running Photoshop or any complex design programs without having it crash on a Windows 7 Tablet. And more than likely there'll be a forward facing camera iPad 2, however who would want to hold an iPad and use it to record videos and such...
I call it a nightmare because they fail, no one wants something that is unresponsive and slow. Sure it has the ability to, but can it be stable? That's one of the reason why Apple created iOS instead of installing OSX

I use a windows tablet daily, I can run Skype, Sony Vegas, & Photoshop all at the same time without crashing once. You only speak about what you have heard, or your bad experiences. i agree with skb, im not an apple fan boy but i dont think the hp slate will not kill the iPad too much. only because, as I hear, it will run windows 7, which is not made for touch. you might as well just get yourself a laptop. What microsoft should do is create a pad that will look similar to or an optimized version of windows 7 mobile.

@ishpabillion wouldn't a laptop be a better device for someone with your needs. Some things you mentioned can be done on an iPad .... Printing, drawings (sketchbook is awesome) tv and movies...come on man, that's iPad land. It's not for you but let's be real. I have a hp laptop that I used to love, now it collects dust. I would have to use the slate to see if windows and touch ui work well together.

The slate WILL be better than this iPad but I think the next iPad will come with cameras and USB ports. Plus that 10 hours of battery is a helping hand.
He is under the assumption that all tablets are meant to be used as toys like the ipad. Students and teacher in colleges (which are the majority of these buyers) would more likely need something that could replace their Bamboo touchpads while in classes. I can't wait for the HP Slate.

In my opinion, the ipad is like having a BMW on a go kart track. Yeah, you have a great quality piece of equipment... but you can't do anything outside of the confined limits Apple has set.

Apple will have more responsive software, but only for it's apps! On the HP you will be able to run EVERYTHING. The stylus that comes with it is basically your mouse, so that problem is covered. + HP HAS FLASH PLAYER. AND HP has put some touchscreen sofware enhancements in it. This thing will work as good as an ipad, if not better.
@1ssi7h Hmm let's see if it will run heavy intense photo editing software or heavy intense games? Guess it can't everything. Flash sucks on mobile devises since it drains the battery; anyone with a sense of a brain will tell you that. And Windows 7 on a slate is a BIG fail for HP...have you actually used one? It's very unresponsive, slow, and typing on it is horrendous. You might as well buy a cheap NetBook that would run better than the slate.
one thing that's gonna be HP Slate's advantage is the USB which means you can plug any USB device on it, which means you can also plug printers, cameras thumbdrives, portable hard drives and specially the portable DVD drives which will enable you to watch tons of movies without having the problem of lacking storage space.
( When I saw Mac behind you, I knew that you are an apple mac fan, and it was real, you wore so bias to iPad which is far away to beat HP slate (on features)

u a simple example.im having htc hd2 and when i connect it to remote desktop,i use windows 7 on hd2 as touch optimised.
hp slate is itself a windows 7 touch powered.also i can use any keyboard,any device,anything to the slate.
i can run any program(designed for windows) on the slate no matter if the program is touch optimised or not bcoz the touch is going to be analogous to the click.

HP Slate is probably gonna take the iPad and simply make it more productive and useful (i.e. cameras, Microsoft Word) The thing is, though, Apple is original with their touch-based interface. I personally despise Windows and Microsoft, but I don't watch those videos and write "Windows 7 is useless". And by the way, I'm not pissed off or some shit like that

@begmicky Look even beyond. I have a friend who is a AV technician and you can plug your mixer Yamaha LS9 into a wifi router and control it using a windows based system. (So he can walk to the stage face and test the sound out according to what he hears instead of what the assistant tells him to). Or what you can do is I am doing to my upcoming home - Use the slate to remote another desktop(throw the heavy processes to the desktop and control using vnc). This HP slate is prosumer item instantly
@begmicky Ha Ha Ha, I would like to see you running Photoshop, Vegas, Acid, and anything from AVID on the HP Slate. I'm also curious as to why those apps require USB ports? Maybe so you can plug in your keyboard and mouse? Not only are those apps not touch optimized, but they also require a whole lot more than an atom 1.2GHz & 1GB of ram. While you do a ram preview of a transition in Vegas on that I'll drive home and do it on my Mac, render out the video to my iPad and come back.

first thing you have to realize about the slate is that it's coming from hp! hp is notorious for parts breaking down, and it's pretty much guaranteed the slate will cause many users problems. secondly, the slate isn't going to run as fast/smoothly as the ipad, esp with w7. even from the hp slate commercial wasn't as responsive as i would expect.
i'm not fanatic about the ipad, but i am only captured by its responsiveness. the interface thrilling, so that definitely needs improvement.
@begmicky and while you lag around trying to figure out how to get rid of that virus, we will be finding stars with the accelerometer and changing the tone of our guitar with a tap.
Actually Windows 7 is quite good. Also, UI tweaks is not a big problem when it comes talking about user-friendly. What the iPad lacks in hardware it can never make up in UI which is easily customizable and upgradeable. Sorry, dude, you are just being way too subjective. Good job, HP!

I call it a nightmare because they fail, no one wants something that is unresponsive and slow. Sure it has the ability to, but can it be stable? That's one of the reason why Apple created iOS instead of installing OSX

@MoisesZTech I truly think you missed my point. The logic in purchasing a product for stability in everything except what I and maybe only I would use it for is illogical. I use a windows tablet daily, I can run Skype, Sony Vegas, & Photoshop all at the same time without crashing once. You only speak about what you have heard, or your bad experiences. This can be proven in a matter of minutes. Would you like to challenge me?

If they sold a Billion Ipads and only one or two Slates, I would consider myself lucky if I owned one. I'm not getting a commission as a owner/ipad user/apple partner & I have never been into popularity contest, I will just let you guys join that crowd.
Personally I think even a netbook does more that an Ipad - webcam, programs galore, cardreaders & more.

i agree with skb, im not an apple fan boy but i dont think the hp slate will not kill the iPad too much. only because, as I hear, it will run windows 7, which is not made for touch. you might as well just get yourself a laptop. What microsoft should do is create a pad that will look similar to or an optimized version of windows 7 mobile.

Printing, drawings (sketchbook is awesome) tv and movies...come on man, that's iPad land. It's not for you but let's be real. I have a hp laptop that I used to love, now it collects dust. I would have to use the slate to see if windows and touch ui work well together.

He is under the assumption that all tablets are meant to be used as toys like the ipad. Students and teacher in colleges (which are the majority of these buyers) would more likely need something that could replace their Bamboo touchpads while in classes. I can't wait for the HP Slate.

Wow clearly your review takes into consideration the minority who uses tablets for entertainment purposes as opposed to functionality.
Majority of consumers are looking for a functional unit that will provide the ability to use software that is essential on a day to day basis.
Oh, and did you forget to emphasize that BECAUSE the HP slate runs the windows 7 OS it's FLASH compatible?? That alone puts the HP slate above and beyond the iPad...other features notwithstanding.

now don't get me wrong. most of your videos are pretty informative but when it comes to comparing something... anything with an apple product you are just too biased to make a decent comparison. ipad is the one for videos pictures and web ONLY not slate. you can't do serious work on it simply because it has a mobile phones software. with windows 7 on the other hand i could run photoshop or warcraft3 or autocad or any other application that i can run on my desktop.

Before the ipad came out he was saying he hoped it had a modified version of snow leopard (the same os apple uses on its notebooks) instead of a iphone OS because he thought it would be able to run apps better.

LOL dude you'e so PRO apple you even have an iMac. You just can't see how the apple gets killed by the Slate just because of windows 7 and the port slots.
Apple will have more responsive software, but only for it's apps! On the HP you will be able to run EVERYTHING. The stylus that comes with it is basically your mouse, so that problem is covered. + HP HAS FLASH PLAYER. AND HP has put some touchscreen sofware enhancements in it. This thing will work as good as an ipad, if not better.

Flash sucks on mobile devises since it drains the battery; anyone with a sense of a brain will tell you that. And Windows 7 on a slate is a BIG fail for HP...have you actually used one? It's very unresponsive, slow, and typing on it is horrendous. You might as well buy a cheap NetBook that would run better than the slate.

one thing that's gonna be HP Slate's advantage is the USB which means you can plug any USB device on it, which means you can also plug printers, cameras thumbdrives, portable hard drives and specially the portable DVD drives which will enable you to watch tons of movies without having the problem of lacking storage space.

u a simple example.im having htc hd2 and when i connect it to remote desktop,i use windows 7 on hd2 as touch optimised.
hp slate is itself a windows 7 touch powered.also i can use any keyboard,any device,anything to the slate.
i can run any program(designed for windows) on the slate no matter if the program is touch optimised or not bcoz the touch is going to be analogous to the click.

An iPad is something completely likable and useful you can have at home when you're chillin. Why would you use Windows on a Slate when you can just use your laptop and do what you need to do much quicker?
When I'm just relaxin at home, I'd feel like snatching my iPad, clickin on a movie and start watching it, check out some websites, then put it back down: satisfied.
You'll seriously reconsider the Slate when you see its tiny un-typable keyboard. I'd just drop it and use my laptop.

Look at it realistically - if the HP Slate runs Windows 7, it's just a VERY ANNOYING version of a laptop without a keyboard! It's a flattop. What the iPad was based on is mainly its "feel". Apparently is complete "magic" to use that thing. If you use an iPad, you'll just simply love it. Slate's USELESS when you've got a laptop.

@begmicky I like these kinds of comments better :) Now, I don't think iPads are useless, but they could have been a lot better. HP Slate is probably gonna take the iPad and simply make it more productive and useful (i.e. cameras, Microsoft Word) The thing is, though, Apple is original with their touch-based interface. I personally despise Windows and Microsoft, but I don't watch those videos and write "Windows 7 is useless". And by the way, I'm not pissed off or some shit like that

@begmicky all of that running on a tablet is overkill, if you want to do stuff like that get a laptop. i would love to see these things used on the slate... it will be hilarious.

@begmicky Look even beyond. I have a friend who is a AV technician and you can plug your mixer Yamaha LS9 into a wifi router and control it using a windows based system. (So he can walk to the stage face and test the sound out according to what he hears instead of what the assistant tells him to). Or what you can do is I am doing to my upcoming home - Use the slate to remote another desktop(throw the heavy processes to the desktop and control using vnc). This HP slate is prosumer item instantly

@begmicky Ha Ha Ha, I would like to see you running Photoshop, Vegas, Acid, and anything from AVID on the HP Slate. I'm also curious as to why those apps require USB ports? Maybe so you can plug in your keyboard and mouse? Not only are those apps not touch optimized, but they also require a whole lot more than an atom 1.2GHz & 1GB of ram. While you do a ram preview of a transition in Vegas on that I'll drive home and do it on my Mac, render out the video to my iPad and come back.

first thing you have to realize about the slate is that it's coming from hp! hp is notorious for parts breaking down, and it's pretty much guaranteed the slate will cause many users problems. secondly, the slate isn't going to run as fast/smoothly as the ipad, esp with w7. even from the hp slate commercial wasn't as responsive as i would expect.
i'm not fanatic about the ipad, but i am only captured by its responsiveness. the interface thrilling, so that definitely needs improvement.

Actually Windows 7 is quite good. Also, UI tweaks is not a big problem when it comes talking about user-friendly. What the iPad lacks in hardware it can never make up in UI which is easily customizable and upgradeable. Sorry, dude, you are just being way too subjective. Good job, HP!
