@Lesley1000 Most of what I've learned about music before the 2000's I've learned because I heard it on youtube and that motivated me to read about it.
I am so fascinated by the 1920s. Imagine driving north from Central Park on Lennox Avenue and stopping your Oldsmobile to go inside and see this beautiful girl sing! That was during Prohibition, but that wasn't too much of a problem, like in the 80s we always found pot during Reagan's "War on Drugs".....
Josephine breathes more life into this simple song than I thought possible - really elevates it. Love Oscar Peterson's much later piano version. Thanks for the gift.
It's a shame that she was patterned after the original Harlem Renaissance Blackbird Florence Mills. There are very few images left of Florence Mills who died in 1924 and you can see that Josephine Baker was heavily influenced by her.
@busessuck1 WHAT racial ambiguity? Josephine Baker was a black girl from St.Louis..just like Redd Foxx and Nelly...aint no ambiguity about them! Pppl should just face it and stop trying to find a reason why she is so beautiful...jeez!!!!..
@bodoildi1 Thank you too! Please understand, it's not my intention to insult you...I couldn't allow your video (Solymos Tóni, Bye Bye Blackbird) on this page. With all respect, your version belongs to a total other world...nothing to do with jazz` (more to sing at Fancy Fairs e.g.).
Unless there were two Josephine Bakers, she was a spy for france during WWII
msn had it on their new's feature today. There were quite a few female spy's one for the revolution, several for the cival war (Both union and confederate), and so far she's the only one for WWII
@stam9998 Um no. A white woman getting a tan (Josephine is much darker than 'tan' by the way) and pretend to be legendary black entertainer in their video sounds ridiculous. Even for Lady Gaga.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful recording, with the verse! It's hard to find anyone singing the verses anymore. (There is another verse, about the bluebird.)
I don't think it is grammatically incorrect to say someone looks like someone that was born after the subject of the sentence. Don't know why this has so many thumbs up (unless I'm wrong...)
@Tsexe07 No one dissed you. They just said (since Alicia Keys was born decades after Josephine Baker died) it'd be Alicia who looks like "another Josephine Baker," not the other way around. : )
Alicia Keys was not born "decades" after Josephine Baker died. She was born a little less than six years after Baker died. Keys was born in January 1981 and Baker died in April 1975. .
@masanf Thanks for setting the record straight. I didn't realize they nearly overlapped (in terms of time on earth). The point is that Baker preceded Keys by several generations.
its amazing the treasures like this people work to preserve. even after wars and natural disasters we can still hear this almost a century later :')
