i think my list i endless since im on my com almost 24/7 -fr work to play... but essentials i need: - Google Chrome - microsoft security essentials - 7zip - Notepad++ - MS Office - iTunes (own an iPhone, so i need it) - DropBox - flashDevelop - TortiseSVN - Steam - VLC - utorrent
I have to agree with Chris. I have iTunes and obviously have used it, but...ever since I downloaded and signed up for [free version only of] Spotify, I can listen to music for free OR I can listen to music that's on the hard drive (via legal methods -- eg. ripping from CDs we own).
The Best Windows software, runs on Mac OS X Lion!!!
Parallels Desktop 7
Running any Windows virtually and being asked when shutting down Windows if I like to delete og merge every changes that happens since I started up Windows every time is great!
THAT keeps Windows running without viruses, trojans, malware, bloatware, keyloggers etc..
My current mandatory programs that I MUST have at ALL TIMES; Chrome, Thunderbird, Windows Live Messenger, Notepad++, Faststone Capture, Filezilla, Eclipse (Dev program), Android SDK (functions like a program, sort of..), Evernote, some printer software program, and of course, Photoshop CS5.
Pretty hefty list of programs, they're a needed.. And I use them on a daily basis on average. Need more RAM, usually have many of these running simultaneously. Aspiring developer & entrepreneur. :)
Sorry for adversing on your video Chris, but i just want to reach out to a crowd. So you may bew asking why i am giving it away? It's because its gonna be worth it later in time if i ever become youtube partner.
Zune! (itunes sucks, and takes why too long to update, when I'm running dual quadcore xeon proccessors and 20Mbits down it should not take two hours for a simple update!!!!!!!!! :(
As i watch this i am using Notepad++ (portable) to write my webpage, which i am uploading to ther server using WinSCP (portable), :-D going good so far [and the rest are spot on]
i use alot of paid software - WinRAR & VMWare - which i guess is just as good as the free ones.
I actually like iTunes - i most probably shouldn't? I have tried WinAMP and Foobar 2000 - but im far from finding something that is visually pleasing. I am yet to find a replacement for iTunes - but if one came along id happily jump ship! (it'd be awesome if this alternate version had DIVX/XVID support)
@NarcoticEvil What don't you like about Winamp? I agree that the ultimate media player hasn't been made yet although Winamp is very close.. and still the one i've used for years. iTunes is just plain shit. It supports nothing and the layout is awful
@Baalund I dont know. I tried really hard to get used to it. I like having an 'audiowall' for my albums, being that all my albums show by artwork in a large pane. And from when I tried WinAmp i couldnt find something like that. I also tried other skins - but i hate multi-window interfaces, its very... well its outdated for me....
Unless you know of a media library that has an 'audio-wall' or a plug-in for winamp, then yeah sure ill try it again.
photos i just use the default what is on windows... Security I use Nod32.. eset! I disagree with itunes as well! also MIRC!!!! I this is a MUST! what else? Electric sheep :D
WinSCP is ok but I would rather use FlashFXP for that.. much better then anything but not free. I used that when I first started but no way! filezilla is good but I only use that on my mac because I cant get flashFXP! .. PUTTY? no way! use SecureCRT.. much better then putty! But again not free while putty is. chrome I use.. skype is good but I never use it.. pigeon not even sure what that is, team viewer is very handy.. 7zip? dont have a need for it. VLC is the best for sure!
In fact, iTunes is one of the best discoveries that I had on my PC. I don't use any Apple hardware or software, but I found iTunes the only way I can organize my 200GB music collection. It's just switching your mind from classical "browsing folders for media" approach to organizing all your music on one big library with numerous of view options and smart playlists. I have about 35 smart playlists, and I finally have a way to control my music collection. So for me, iTunes IS essential software!
Chrome, WSE, Skype, Win Live Messenger, MagicISO so that i don't have to mess with my cd's , i just use backup iso images, Notepad++, WAMP, TeamViewer, Adobe Reader, For my text editing and stuff i use web based apps like google docs. And BTW Yii is one of the best PHP framework's :)
Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot Search & Destroy, Steam, Google Chrome, VLC Media Player, Dropbox Software. Thats it. MAYBE FireFox, as a backup browser.
Avast antivirus is nice. I know a lot of people don't like Spybot Search & Destroy, but it does have quite a few useful tools and does a fair job of disabling spyware and malware. Also check into IObit in general. They have several freeware versions as well as professional for many of the medial tasks that we don't usually get to.
Thank you Chris for hating iTunes too. I only have it because of my iPhone. I don´t know how it is on OSX but on Windows iTunes is the slowest piece of software i´ve ever seen. My PC can run BF3 on highest details but iTunes stutters sometimes!!! For most stuff it can be replaced with CopyTrans Manager and iFunBox, but sometimes there is no choice.
Notepad, only recently realised that. Though i'm a IT pro as long as Chris, i never liked notepad because its was lacking soo many features. Notepad++ is still my favourite. But Notepad is so useful and light. Best thing about is because it's soo shitty. It is a great tool strip any formating and metadata from text. Something as a coder i need often.
A great collection of software... It's easy and fast to install... You just pick which apps/programs you want and download a single installer (that installs all of the software).
Aren't LibreOffice and OpenOffice seperate entities? I can imagine one was a spin-off of the other, but I was under the impression OpenOffice is still fully supported
Openoffice is great but to use it effectively, you need to be good at grammar. Other then that its extremely useful. its only weakness is grammar checking.

what program would you recommend for managing music on windows other than iTunes? I have an ios device, but I'm tired of iTunes crashing... I'm trying Spotify, so far not many issues, just wondering if there is something out there better that I am missing - thanks
