RICHARD ELLIOT IS ONE OF THE BEST! JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THEN KING CURTIS WHEN RICHARD ELLIOT PLAYS I FEEL IT DEEP DOWN MAN LUV IT!. EDDIE GAMBINO
His mouthpiece was a Strathon adjustatone, the ligature was "built in". Tom Scott was using the same one for a while.
Personally I like the sound of his Yamaha and Strathon much more than his current setup. But that's just me, I've always had a hard time with change! :)
The story I remember hearing was his Yamaha and Strathon were stolen, and Pete LaPlaca who owned LA Sax at the time gave him new gear.(tenor and mpc). I love this CD. Saw him LIve when he was on tour with it, it was an incredible show> He had gone to the Carnegie Deli in NYC (he was a Vegetarian at the time) and had a corned Beef on Rye, that night he said he changed the name of "In Your Face" to "Gastronomic Distress." He was a blast.
I hate to be negative (in regards to Elliott's image), but I actually like him better here than I do today, and I saw him about two years ago here in Tampa. Any idea what tpe of sax he's playing?
Richard has never played on a Selmer, at least not during his pro career.
Back when this was recorded he was playing ALL Yamaha, this being a YTS-62. He started using both Yamaha and LA Sax on his Soul Embrace CD (1993), and eventually became LA Sax full time.
Personally, I've played them both, and the Yamaha has it all over the LA, and I like Richard's sound better back then, too.
He also used to play a Strathon Adjustatone mouthpiece (in this video), now he plays with a metal piece.
I don't know which mouthpiece he uses today, but I just prefer his "older" sound, like on this video.
He undoubtedly as a player has gotten better, I just never saw anything wrong with the sound he had. In other words, I don't know why he ever switched to LA, Yamaha's have quite the reputation.
He still has his own sound, just in a different way. Obviously you're like me, and prefer his old sound. That's not knocking him, it's just being honest.
Very nice!! The last time I saw Richard Elliot, he had this same band, about '91 or '92 if memory serves correctly. Just an awesome lineup, so tight, you can tell they played together a lot. Also, you gotta love the mullets!!! lol Seriously, this is great, really brings back some good memories!!!
Why can't sax players today play more like this? I've played for 15 years and still lvoe this kinda stuff. I can't see how people at "smooth jazz" shows wouldn't rather hear this than what's out there now.
That's the beauty of cd's, they stand the test of time :)
I agree, I prefer the music he used to put out, it was more upbeat, and more versatile. What do I mean by versatile? Well, his new music will appeal to an older listener, sort of one dimensional, great for cd sales, though.
His older music could be listened to by both older and younger listeners, it wouldn't put you to sleep, like some of his newer stuff can. Just my opinion, but he's not hurting for money, that's for sure!
I wonder how he's doing financially. His keyboard player, Ron Reinhardt (and brother Dave) both live in my area here in the Tampa area. I know Ron will fly out to LA for a couple days at a time. Given that some smooth jazz players are doing the group thing, like Elliott and Braun, the Sax Pack, etc........makes me wonder how well in fact he really is doing.

I saw an old Tower of Power concert and Richard played a Selmer M6 on that, so this was during his pro-career!
He nowadays plays a LA sax moutpiece (copy of guardala)

Perhaps in his old tower of power days he did, you may be right.
I know for certain during his "solo" career, he was all Yamaha, then switched to LA Sax.
