I havent seen the second one, but I love it when a horror doesn't try you with copious amounts of violence, just really subtle things that are made scary by timing. Like the end you were just waiting for something to happen but instead it was the anticlimax and then the ominous girl. It's just not like....for lack of a better term, all up in your face. Awesome.
