I like the rail idea with the grooved bearings. Do you have any issues later on down the road with the aluminum rails wearing do to the hardened "v" shaped bearings riding on the rails thus causing more play in the gantry?
@roncoffey The hardened steel bearings essentially "cold roll" the aluminum creating a pressed grain structure with residual stresses, which makes that part of the aluminum rail stronger. As time goes by, the rails exhibit the same profile as the bearings and with the increased surface area, wear is almost non-existent. However, adjustment is necessary during the rolling period.
i just put this one together, after assembly its like 20"x48", it is amazingly solid for its size, the price was well worth it, but i think my next one will be custom.
@KritikalDimensions Thanks for that comment. These machines also offers a great way to understand the mechanics. After assembly comes the confidence to build another if you so desire. Enjoy the blueChick and please inform on the progress on the new machine.
@anajonesr thats it exactly, i was a little apprehensive, but the setup is so simple if you use mach 3. After throwing the numbers in and wiring it, the complete understanding of a stepper motor makes my imagination explode.
@litosk84fun yes, theres some great somftware for gcoding complex programs. Because your using a pc instead of siemens or fanuc controller, the memory is very capable of long strings of finely detailed 3D patterns.
Yes, I have been designing these machines for 4 years now. And I will probably be designing these types of machines until I'm 100 years old or until I die, whichever comes first.

Is this a hobby? it is really cool. I wonder if he designs these himself. I really could use a cnc machine to cut vinyl stencils.
