Unfortunately, many (so-called) Northern Soul fans on Youtube are of the blinkered "don't rock the boat, don't say anything remotely controversial, let's pretend it's still 1976, lets pretend Wigan never closed" crowd! - and many are not even Soul fans at all. They just like wearing the pretty badges. LOL
You R still an arrogant cocksucker DrWhatever..there R plenty of us around fm as long ago as U & longer..that R welcome to hear newly discovered trax...fm the undiscovered gem store of the golden yrs of soul..but we actually LIKE reliving our way of life from the beginning of the 70's to about 77/78..{apologies to the Mods & Cat's Crew}..Wigan was in the middle of my fave yrs..but U have an arrogant attitude of the pricks that they 'know better'..I know about 25 other clubs fm then U know 0 of.
Thank you for your oh-so-typical semi-literate comments, but please learn to write in English before you spout your tired insults. I never understood morse code...
I abbreviated to get everything I wanted to say into the letter space that UTube allows. There is nothing wrong with my English..you're still a pompous prick..& you ignored the point I was expressing.
Your elevated opinion of yourself just counterpoints the arrogance of the underlying metaphor that you inflict on the scene that thousands love. But you think you are so far above that you can decide how things should be. And would be if you actually amounted to anything.
You have obviously completely misunderstand the points I make, I suspect because you choose to ignore them, which only reinforces my comments above about being afraid to voice opinions that differ from the herd. I stand by my opinions on the overblown antics of the ex-Wiganite publicity machine, and have yet to hear them refuted with anything other than cheap insults.
What is this "underlying metaphor that (I) inflict on the scene" that you refer to?
this track accompanying the video wasn't actually in the film, they used a track i believe was called the price of pain, in the film (which i thought was bloody awful !)the 45 rpm single the dj put on the deck was on the SSS international label does anybody know the artist (if indeed he existed?)
cheers for that mojo rebel,i had a feeling it was him when i first heard it,but after looking at virtualy every tracklisting on edwin star's albums i couldn't find it ! any idea where it's available ?.
Look...he's a nice guy.....but i know a lot of guys and a few girls from 72 onwards that were killer dancers.......all funkin night.......a few sadly not with us anymore.....but Jethro, Carl and 'G' from Cornwall were wicked NS dancers....without any breakdance in it, spins and acrobatics...all night, in beat, and usually off their n*ts...as were we all....
I can't see why so many ppl have given u a thumbs down Dr Whatson, the scene NEEDS new blood, NEEDS new people, NEEDS new tunes, NEEDS new moves, NEEDS new dances, NEEDS new dancers, we can't just recycle the same over and over and over again! Dancers were ALWAYS innovative and cutting edge, but now they just seem to do the same old lame old moves :(
A sense of where ya from IS important,
but a sense of where we're goin is TOO!!
imo, DrWhatson is jus sayin what loads of ppl think. fair do's
I used to go to the Blackpool Mecca Highland Room in the early 70's. I never really got into back drops as I thought it interupted the dance rythm. The Highland room was always packed to over flowing - possibly the reason for back drops not really catching on there (not enough floor space.) Maybe that's why the centre for Northern Soul music moved from Blackpool to Wigan. I still get a chill down my spine when I hear some of the classic NS dance tracks.
I thought it was cos sooo many squeezed into one b&b lots had to sleep standing against wall .. so was soo tired & needed to stretch when on dance floor lol ...yeaaa right lol
We mods in the 60s would have come off the dance floor with the splitting back drop brake dance man (not cool)doing that, just cant see what that dance has to do with soul music the teddy boys and rockers and greaser in the 1960s used to dance like that more or less... Everybody else so cool and wonderful dancing except for the look at me man ?
are u referrin to the BUB from yorks, (mate of rob slaters & tommy & steve) who famously went thru the stage when dancing one ngt? ( can't b sure, but think our mr lance was out on floor that ngt???)
the guy doing the splits/back drop and all that shit aint very soul its defo not to the beat/rythm of the music he,s like a fooking break dancer or very late 50s / 60s rock & roll dance defo not soul dancing you dance to the rythm always
I take you have never seen northern soul dancing before. The dancing was like that long before break dancing.(maybe a few r&r moves). but soul dancing was that way, enjoy it because everyone in the video was.
The vid second to none love it ( i have been in to soul since Johnnie Walker boarded the Mi,Amigo in October 1966 and played a lot of Northern classics before they ever reached the soul circuit sure you know what the Mi, Amigo is if you know your 60s music stuff KTF
I mean the might Bub- from Barnsley - dj and a a large size to go with his large peronality. big mates of Waggy, Snowy, Jonny Baxter, Tommy Cooper All the Doncaster Crew
Well, someone had sent me the Barbara Mills "Queen of Fools" video just before you sent this, so at least I knew what song was playing. (Great song, by the way, and a solid dancer!)That's some very impressive dancing! Thanks for sending!
this gave me goosebumps, it has real atmosphere, and what a brilliant song. by barbara mills, queen of fools, still play my 45 today. just listened to ian levine's cd release in sept 07, but i didnt get the same feeling as i felt listening and watching the dance moves
Please anyone that has the single for queen of fools upload now , you can't download this song ANYWHERE , And i really don't want to pay 19.95 for a crappy bootleg CD from shopping network online lol .
do you know of any northern soul dancing dvds out there. i been trying to teach my son but its difficult. is there one you know of, you seem very knowledgable, i like your site and outlook. northern soul was so good when we were younger it wasnt just the dancing it was the one-ness of the whole thing. it didnt matter where you were from or colour or fat/thin, black/white , tall/short!!you were all there to enjoy the music and the social event. you dont get that today do you.
Dude, don't try and teach your boy with a dvd, just take him to a Northern doo! If he's not old enough to go to a nighter, take him to an all dayer, simple!
what a fantastic piece of film from this film that i still cant get!!! i was at wigan, bought memories back and even shed a tear. still groovin though!!! can still dance even though nearly fifty now!! fantastic. if you know where i can get this film please tell. carol
