What I'm learning from these videos is that at its core...atheism is sincerity in an age that tolerates and even rewards INsincerity. I find that incredibly liberating.
Most of this is quite well said and balanced (many other atheists would be more close-minded). Indeed there are many bad arguments and strawmen that both creationists and evolutionists have used in the past. If empirical evidence is against a particular claim, then that claim should be rejected.
(ps: guess who discovered germ theory.....the answer may actually be surprising)
@cp3814 The germ theory of disease can be attributed to the works Girolamo Fracastoro, Agostino Bassi, Nicolas Andry,John Snow,Francesco Redi and Robert Koch , amongst others. Like most things in science it came about by the work of many people using the scientific method to work out what was going on. So, I'm not really sure what you point is.
All your stuff is awesome, Thinking Atheist. Every video you put up here is very well produced and even your long format stuff is nice. Keep doing what you're doing because this is huge.

AronRa you are an inspiration. Your humbleness and and unwavering quest for truth is what we should all strive for. Thanks for the this brilliant post as well as your other mind opening posts.
We no longer treat ulcers with Arsenic or Mercury, there will come a time of a post religious era when all theological nonsence will be just an historical embarrassment and oddity. Therein is the true hope for the future.
"One by one by one you weed them out" AronRa speaking about his beliefs and how they were dropped. When one becomes a 'moderate' in a religion, that means is that you no longer believe EVERYTHING in a religion, and as you continue to think, you come to realize that, indeed, "one by one" you got rid of beliefs for which you had no evidence. The inevitability of this (if you continue to think) is that you become an atheist. I like to refer to thinking moderates as "atheists in training"
Is there anything to differentiate your claim from "you imagined it".
Many claims of astral projection and/or out of body experiences have been tested and there's no evidence to indicate that such a thing exists, at least not under controlled conditions anyways.
@garith21 This experience of astral projection which I am not claiming is exactly as is implied in the term (ie. that there truly is an astral body that can traverse some plane) does not fall into any category like "dreaming", "lucid dreaming", "hallucination" or "imagination" so, there has to be another category of experience and I think calling it what it feels like is certainly applicable. I was a skeptic many years ago so instead of denying it, I made an effort to do it and I did.
You mean the same Monroe institute which insists that spoon bending is a display of mental powers? They've even stated to people inquiring about if they plan on substantiating their claims with "it's impossible to objectively prove these powers". Sorry but I don't find such cases terribly convincing, why do you?
@garith21 Robert Monroe has excellent techniques so you can do it yourself; forget about what his institution may or may not be supporting because logically, you cannot invalidate an experience by defaming an institution. Prove it to yourself if you have the curiosity, if not, don't. It won't change the reality either way, just your perception of it.
So, nothing to differentiate the experience of imagining it vs it actually being what you claim. I pointed out there's studies testing the actual claim of being separate from your body, you simply want to rely on personal experience without testing which is the worst form of evidence that there is.
@garith21 Read what I've said. The experience itself necessitates a new category of classification, that's it. If you have trouble understanding this, I can't help you.
An experience is merely an experience, if you can't explain or test it in any meaningful way outside of that, it remains as an experience. It requires no more a reclassification than imagination, dreaming or experiences while high. If you have trouble understanding this then I really can't help you.
@blackcrow6667 "the experience itself as an experience is genuine." Yes! consider this: When we dream it seems real until we wake up. This shows that the mind is capable of creating a 'real' experience of life without there being any physical manifestations of it. Your mind routinely 'time-shifts' your sensing of the external world anyway (if it didn't, when you bumped your head & foot at the "same time" you would feel your head 1st) so to create an 'astral projection' would be no big trick.
He said that this isn't the case with rationalists, but that's clearly not the case. Rationalists are first year college students who glance at the Discovery Channel and Nat Geo in between bong hits.
The Thinking Atheist contradicts Aronra by implying that he wants religion to become non-existent. How? Before he made that comment, Aronra WHINED about those evil judgmental Christians that look down upon him for not believing in fairy tales.
I would like to see churches one day, especially the ones that are empty till Sunday, being used a soup kitchens and such for the homeless, or unemployed. I know many of them have some kind of a kitchen, make them useful, but until then they are just eye-sores.
Easily one of the worst points of criticism ever posted. Instead of attacking any subject matter, you start by attacking people who consider themselves rational (What a crime) without backing up why you doubt that claim, then you continue to assert that we "rationalists" only enjoy certain speakers for the most shallow of reasons.
I don't mean to burst the pathetic bubble you put up to shield your religious insecurities, but we're not all sheep.
You know what they say about people who make assumptions, right? I'm not a religious person and I'm not an atheist hell bent on tearing down the Church, either.
Speaking of which: Immediately after AronRa finishes talking about Christians and their intolerance towards his viewpoint, The Thinking Atheist says, with a sigh, "We'll never get rid of religion..." Hilarious. :'-D
The so called racialists are the same idiots you'll find frequenting sites like 4 Chan and Encyclopedia Dramatica. Trolling sites all day long, posting inane, often racist, comments for "lulz." Your major news source is the Daily Show and the Colbert report and your favorite foods include: Herbs and munchies from the gas station. Real brain trust you have going on here.
That would make me a proud member of the racialist/rationalist group considering I enjoy just about all those forms of entertainment you listed there.
I still can't grasp why my fellow "tards" are demonized for subscribing to a group of intellectuals with a political agenda to rid our society of what we believe to be institutions that only seem to slow the progression of our species.
See. I know "rationalist" 'tards like the back of my hand. You aren't intellectuals. You're twenty-something clowns with an over-inflated sense of self worth and intelligence. Kind of creepy, though, how your idols are always old/older men (e.g. Pat Condell). It's sort of like those cougar relationships but with guys primarily.
@MasterfulInsane You're seriously comparing a person listening to an old man talk, with dating an older woman?
Older people have been around longer... when was the last time you considered the advice of a 5-year-old? But comparing it to dating is wrong on so many levels, there are no words to describe it. I think someone was just desperate for a reason to say it was bad, as this was the best they could do.
@MasterfulInsane First of all you are ignorant to what a rationalist is, Google rationalism. You wont find any here. So how should I act, instead of keeping to myself as I normally would I decided to reply, following your example, I will not be as aggressive however, so how should I think? What am I doing wrong oh genius who knows all a beg you share your enlightened wisdom and show me the path of light you walk, the obviously truly great philosophy that everyone who likes AronRa is ignorant of.
Isn't there some sort of rule against against going full retard? Frankly, I barely understood a word you said and I can't for the life of me figure out how it ties in with anything I said. You were rambling more than anything else. But then again, I'm just some toothless, moonshine drinkin', 4 wheel drivin', hillbilly......YEEHAW! I love me some Jebus.
Aronra is a real american hero. He goes around preaching truth, in a place where it is much easier and financially beneficial to lie and make a ridiculous amount of money.
@limericklad2000 I think he is talking about psychic empathy, or being empathic. Normal empathy allows you to be compassionate towards another person, but psychic empathy is supposed to allow you to feel (emotionally and sometimes physically) on a global scale via the collective consciousness of us all or some such woo.
I stopped believing in God when I was 11. It was kinda like, I looked at the sky to talk to God and realized no one was going to answer me back, and that no one had ever answered me before.
I can't remember when I stopped believing in god. I think I've always questioned it, since even as a child so many things didn't make any sense to me. I know I became absolutely certain that religion was false before I reached my teens. It was a gradual process, as I grew older and began to read and learn more. Evolution made perfect sense to me, in a way that religion did not, at all.
@justjulie37 just search for an addon for firefox/chrome called 'ad block plus'. you won't see anymore ads on youtube or any other website for that matter.
Truth has been taken hostage by the Dishonesty. And the truth seeking people are being terrorized by those who are making money through distorting the Truth and feed it to masses.
My parents rarely talked about religion and I have thanked them ever since, even as a child i thought the crap the religious children were spouting was ridiculous! It never sounded right!
Aronra: "Every thousand years, I test each life system in the Universe. I visit it with mysteries, earthquakes, unpredicted eclipses, strange craters in the wilderness - If these are taken as natural, I judge that system ignorant and harmless - I spare it. But if the Hand of Aron is recognized in these events, I judge that system dangerous to us. I call upon the great god Dyzan, and for his greater glory, and for our mutual pleasure, I destroy it utterly."
Is AronRa a scientist? Biologist? Does anyone know his profession or career? I am just curious because I know he seems to have a very good grasp of evolution & obviously he appears to be very bright. Thanks!
@johnnyphoenix74 He looks like a Visigoth! So, I guess that means you have no clue either? Anyone else know what profession AronRa does? Is he a Biologist?
@johnnyphoenix74 Yeah, he seems to know a lot about biology so I just thought he was a PhD. However, it is hard to know that simply by watching videos & that is why I was curious...I guess no one knows huh? Oh well, it is not that important other than curiosity. Thanks.
There's the solution! Science should be taught in "Mega Churches!" You know. In the same style as Mega Churches. If it works for brainwashing, the same model should work for edumacation!
'... looking for the real answer." Great stuff, what AronRa said there. I'd love to see a book or even a YouTube video that takes one thing after another and tells the story of how initially supernatural explanations were given, and eventually replaced by proven natural reasons.
@duminicad - Maybe a video series akin to TF's WPLAC videos, instead TWUTB - Things We Used to Believe, but less incredulous without being less critical of those old ideas and institutions. It could cover anything, like the silly and whimsical idea that the moon was said be be made of green cheese, to things like ordinary chemistry and medicine, to really serious stuff, like sick idea of the uncleanliness of women and the linking of them to Eve of the Bible.
@duminicad - Or this thought, a series on NWSB - Nonsense We Still Believe. The ThinkingAtheist's recent recap of the origins and development of Halloween for instance, or that nice video reviewing the history of Satan, based on Pagel's book. One series would show by example how to get to the right answer, and the other how over time one idea can morph into quite another, and "be so bad as to not even be wrong", as they say.
I don't drool over anyone. I also don't believe in talking snakes, dinosaurs were on an ark with every living animal that exist now, or that men can live in whales. I would sooner believe in the tooth fairy. Now shouldn't you go stone one your kids for masturbating, or send them to church to get molested by a man in a dress.
@greenghost2008 She was letting them know that where they are recording, there is a mass of people gathering someplace close by and it was getting louder and she was letting them know so it didn't interfere with the recording.
so the question is: is it a good idea to get into argument against intelligent design theory so much so that equation that we end up having is atheist=evolutionist? Danger as said is that, if somehow evolution theory gets thrown out of the window, atheism/agnosticism that bases on logical reasoning and data is thrown out automatically. Its true for especially the society around that does NOT realize simple fact: “That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" :)
@vedhasp So you're saying intelligent design theory should go unopposed? If want to oppose it how do you do that without referring to evolution? Also, the theory of evolution is not going to be thrown out. The amounts of evidence supporting it is overwhelming.
@phaexus No I am not saying it should go unopposed, but indeed there are substantial claims, there is interesting piece of engineering that builds us, also everything around us, again I can't agree to the invisible guy/personification part. Anyway, not the point. miamorhardstyle got exactly what I was saying, please refer to that comment. Problem however REMAINS : people dont realize EVEN IF "evolution gets proven wrong tomorrow, it doesn't make any god any less bullshit, or atheism any weaker."
@vedhasp How do you oppose intelligent design without referring to evolution?
"but indeed there are substantial claims,"
What claims?
"there is interesting piece of engineering that builds us, also everything around us"
I'm not sure what you mean by this? An intelligent force without a mind?
I think the theory of evolution needs to be false if the bible is taken literally, but it's correct that theism necessarily isn't true if the theory of evolution is false.
What I'm learning from these videos is that at its core...atheism is sincerity in an age that tolerates and even rewards INsincerity. I find that incredibly liberating.

AronRa is an intellectual that I would strive to emulate if I had the means.
Morahg 4 months ago
I've astral projected so, the experience itself as an experience is genuine.
blackcrow6667 4 months ago
@blackcrow6667
Is there anything to differentiate your claim from "you imagined it".
Many claims of astral projection and/or out of body experiences have been tested and there's no evidence to indicate that such a thing exists, at least not under controlled conditions anyways.
garith21 4 months ago
@garith21 This experience of astral projection which I am not claiming is exactly as is implied in the term (ie. that there truly is an astral body that can traverse some plane) does not fall into any category like "dreaming", "lucid dreaming", "hallucination" or "imagination" so, there has to be another category of experience and I think calling it what it feels like is certainly applicable. I was a skeptic many years ago so instead of denying it, I made an effort to do it and I did.
blackcrow6667 4 months ago
@garith21 If you're interested, Google Robert Monroe and go from there.
blackcrow6667 4 months ago
@blackcrow6667
You mean the same Monroe institute which insists that spoon bending is a display of mental powers? They've even stated to people inquiring about if they plan on substantiating their claims with "it's impossible to objectively prove these powers". Sorry but I don't find such cases terribly convincing, why do you?
garith21 4 months ago
@garith21 Robert Monroe has excellent techniques so you can do it yourself; forget about what his institution may or may not be supporting because logically, you cannot invalidate an experience by defaming an institution. Prove it to yourself if you have the curiosity, if not, don't. It won't change the reality either way, just your perception of it.
blackcrow6667 4 months ago
@blackcrow6667
So, nothing to differentiate the experience of imagining it vs it actually being what you claim. I pointed out there's studies testing the actual claim of being separate from your body, you simply want to rely on personal experience without testing which is the worst form of evidence that there is.
garith21 4 months ago
@garith21 Read what I've said. The experience itself necessitates a new category of classification, that's it. If you have trouble understanding this, I can't help you.
blackcrow6667 4 months ago
@blackcrow6667
An experience is merely an experience, if you can't explain or test it in any meaningful way outside of that, it remains as an experience. It requires no more a reclassification than imagination, dreaming or experiences while high. If you have trouble understanding this then I really can't help you.
garith21 4 months ago

I don't mean to burst the pathetic bubble you put up to shield your religious insecurities, but we're not all sheep.
johnnydoe001 4 months ago
@johnnydoe001
MasterfulInsane 4 months ago
@johnnydoe001
Most of you are.
MasterfulInsane 4 months ago
@MasterfulInsane
That would make me a proud member of the racialist/rationalist group considering I enjoy just about all those forms of entertainment you listed there.
I still can't grasp why my fellow "tards" are demonized for subscribing to a group of intellectuals with a political agenda to rid our society of what we believe to be institutions that only seem to slow the progression of our species.
johnnydoe001 4 months ago
@johnnydoe001
MasterfulInsane 4 months ago
@MasterfulInsane You're seriously comparing a person listening to an old man talk, with dating an older woman?
Older people have been around longer... when was the last time you considered the advice of a 5-year-old? But comparing it to dating is wrong on so many levels, there are no words to describe it. I think someone was just desperate for a reason to say it was bad, as this was the best they could do.
TheOJDrinker 4 months ago
@MasterfulInsane First of all you are ignorant to what a rationalist is, Google rationalism. You wont find any here. So how should I act, instead of keeping to myself as I normally would I decided to reply, following your example, I will not be as aggressive however, so how should I think? What am I doing wrong oh genius who knows all a beg you share your enlightened wisdom and show me the path of light you walk, the obviously truly great philosophy that everyone who likes AronRa is ignorant of.

limericklad2000 4 months ago
@limericklad2000 I think he is talking about psychic empathy, or being empathic. Normal empathy allows you to be compassionate towards another person, but psychic empathy is supposed to allow you to feel (emotionally and sometimes physically) on a global scale via the collective consciousness of us all or some such woo.

I stopped believing in God when I was 11. It was kinda like, I looked at the sky to talk to God and realized no one was going to answer me back, and that no one had ever answered me before.
EmberFaust 4 months ago
I can't remember when I stopped believing in god. I think I've always questioned it, since even as a child so many things didn't make any sense to me. I know I became absolutely certain that religion was false before I reached my teens. It was a gradual process, as I grew older and began to read and learn more. Evolution made perfect sense to me, in a way that religion did not, at all.

I call upon the great god Dyzan, and for his greater glory, and for our mutual pleasure, I destroy it utterly."

duminicad 4 months ago
@duminicad - Maybe a video series akin to TF's WPLAC videos, instead TWUTB - Things We Used to Believe, but less incredulous without being less critical of those old ideas and institutions. It could cover anything, like the silly and whimsical idea that the moon was said be be made of green cheese, to things like ordinary chemistry and medicine, to really serious stuff, like sick idea of the uncleanliness of women and the linking of them to Eve of the Bible.
Prelude610 4 months ago
@duminicad - Or this thought, a series on NWSB - Nonsense We Still Believe. The ThinkingAtheist's recent recap of the origins and development of Halloween for instance, or that nice video reviewing the history of Satan, based on Pagel's book. One series would show by example how to get to the right answer, and the other how over time one idea can morph into quite another, and "be so bad as to not even be wrong", as they say.
Prelude610 4 months ago
I don't drool over anyone. I also don't believe in talking snakes, dinosaurs were on an ark with every living animal that exist now, or that men can live in whales. I would sooner believe in the tooth fairy. Now shouldn't you go stone one your kids for masturbating, or send them to church to get molested by a man in a dress.

so the question is: is it a good idea to get into argument against intelligent design theory so much so that equation that we end up having is atheist=evolutionist? Danger as said is that, if somehow evolution theory gets thrown out of the window, atheism/agnosticism that bases on logical reasoning and data is thrown out automatically. Its true for especially the society around that does NOT realize simple fact: “That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" :)
vedhasp 4 months ago
@vedhasp So you're saying intelligent design theory should go unopposed? If want to oppose it how do you do that without referring to evolution? Also, the theory of evolution is not going to be thrown out. The amounts of evidence supporting it is overwhelming.
phaexus 4 months ago
@phaexus No I am not saying it should go unopposed, but indeed there are substantial claims, there is interesting piece of engineering that builds us, also everything around us, again I can't agree to the invisible guy/personification part. Anyway, not the point. miamorhardstyle got exactly what I was saying, please refer to that comment. Problem however REMAINS : people dont realize EVEN IF "evolution gets proven wrong tomorrow, it doesn't make any god any less bullshit, or atheism any weaker."
vedhasp 4 months ago
@vedhasp How do you oppose intelligent design without referring to evolution?
"but indeed there are substantial claims,"
What claims?
"there is interesting piece of engineering that builds us, also everything around us"
I'm not sure what you mean by this? An intelligent force without a mind?
I think the theory of evolution needs to be false if the bible is taken literally, but it's correct that theism necessarily isn't true if the theory of evolution is false.
