Hey man really helpful video and everybody that's trying to learn this song knows it ...I like how you took the time to show us some of the thing Ed does on that song... palm muting is a technique that If you don't have down makes this song hard to play you should do something on it I'd watch ..
Great video, you broke it down nicely. Now I'll go away and practice it a couple of million times. This song is a bit above my ability but you've given me enough to go on, and in time it won't be. Keep up the good work !
Pretty much over my head - I´m still way too bad at playing. :-) But really motivating all the same, I think you really did a good job there, thanks! Keep it up!!
I think for this song you where right not to take it down so you could teach absolutely anyone it, because it would take too long. However I think you focused a bit too much on the fingerings, and not enough on the strum, the strum in my opinion is much harder to get down, and even ed him self says it is, just a little bit on it would have been helpful.
Look I dont want you to redo your video again, it's actually really thoughtful, it's just you play it way too fast, and for some really bad music learners they can't keep up with you. I know you're ultimate at guitar n all but when you're teaching you gotta learn to keep it at a slower pace for beginners. Also, I'm kind of in the intermediate range and I still had to replay the video alot, which I don't mind but just some tips.
@cathwon I don't have a problem with feedback at all. I only make two notes: 1) at the time I made this video (not sure if this is still true), Youtube had a 10-min limit. While this video may not have reached 10 mins, while I'm recording, I'm conscious of it, and so tend not to slow down to the point where each 10 second segment of the song takes 30 seconds to play. (continued in next post)
@cathwon (continued) 2) With the greatest of respect, my audience for these videos was intended to be the more intermediate player. I could do (as I see in many tutorial videos) "so then you just play a G-A-D - that's G, 2nd finger on the E string at 3rd fret.... 1st finger on the A string at 2nd fret..." for each chord. This is great for beginners, but once I knew chords, this frustrated me. (continued)
@cathwon (continued 2) I will add a number 3, 3) At the time I made this (2007), youtube was not as full of 'complete lessons' of songs, and I envisioned the use of youtube as being a suppliment to the written tab which I created and linked to. The tab was to serve as an instruction sheet that can be read and learned at any pace(before youtube most people learned songs from tab). I expected viewers to get the tab, read it, and use the video if they couldn't visualize a fingering or riff (cont.)
@cathwon I'm glad that youtube has thrived since then, and my later videos have been a bit more overall-instructional, but this was an early one, and I'm not planning to redo it. Perhaps I'll add a "caption" at the start of the video that more clearly says "get the tab, of course you're going to be lost without the tab, because I recorded this assuming you had the tab in front of you."
All that said, I certainly take all such comments under advisement should I ever do any more videos.
Not sure how people can criticize when you've put together a great video. It took a ton of work no doubt, it is very good work, done for free, and done to benefit other people. Constructive criticizing might be alright, but we gotta watch the lines we cross because we don't wanna dissuade somebody who is clearly helping us.
heya great tutorial. but just wondering, after the F chord you play the second and thrid strings but i can't really get it haha. do you pick down on the thrid string then pick up on the second?
@darlingable Yeah, that's exactly what it is - Down on the 6th string (hammer on 1), down on 3rd string open and up on 2nd string at 1 (and 1st string open if you catch it). It's sort of a down-up-down-up arm rhythm, but the 1st up is not strummed and would be where the hammer-on is.
@evilkrab1 I like how you imply you don't understand a chord, but don't say which one so that it can be clarified. Either way, As I clearly state in the description, this is supplimental to the tab. If you don't find your 'explaination' of hte chord in there, so be it, but I have provided this video supplimental to that tab. Secondly, I make no implication that this lesson is for beginners. My aim was/is not to teach you how to play basic guitar. It's to teach the more subtle points of the song.
@TheHYPO Oh sorry! lol. It was the D/F# (Or vise versa i dont remember how it's written). I didn't mean to sound insulting if that's how it felt. A large part of this video was perfect for what I needed- putting chords in place that I already knew, but figuring out the pattern- and it helped alot.
But like I said. It just felt slightly un-balanced to how fleshed out some explanations were and how quickly some went by. Just some constructive criticism for your next video. Hope i helped lol
Wow. I haven't even pickd up the guitar yet to see if i can do it and I think at least I can figure it out form this. Was struggling with tabs to see how this all worked. would have taken forever. I appreciate this lesson and will try it now.

Dude you dont explain anything....and this is the slowed down version? Not all of us have trained our ears yet. This does not help even intermediate guitar players. YU SUCK
@imover18lol89 You apparently haven't trained your eyes either, as I brought the fingering right up as close to the camera as possible. if you can't see what's being done, that has nothing to do with your ears. If you feel it doesn't help you, That's fine. you're no worse off than you were before. Plenty of others have replied that this helped them.
@imover18lol89 I just came in to watch how his Larrivee L-09E sounds like..
but reading your comment makes me laugh.
the dude in this vid was trying his best with gentle repetition (which you can rewind and playback again) if you're intermediate, you should start with easier song.. and if you have passion to practice the song with this video, you should stick to it using replaying and pausing to catch his cords instead of complaining that why he's not babysitting you from crawling to running.
You play good but teache horrible. It's not that you play to fast, but you don't realy show or tell what you do. You tell only how to do it. (don't get me wrong, i can play it thanks to you, but be more open about the tabs)
Great video, the only part i'm having trouble with is the part you describe as "picking and muting" around 1:57, can't seem to get the hang of playing anything around the base notes - any tips you (or anyone else!) could give me? Thanks!
Muting is the silencing of strings, most commonly your the side of your palm along the edge of your pinky (called "palm muting"). When used to mute ringing strings, it can cause a percussive tapping sound. If you pluck a string while the palm is touching, it will play a short, deadened note. ("muted"). So for example, on the Fmaj13, you're gonna play the first 3 notes, then mute while playing the next 2 notes (A and E string). Same muting on the G, and mute after the 3rd pluck on the Cadd9
After the D/F# is Fmaj13 up to G with a runup to Cadd9 - basically identical to the start of a verse, but with a bit more energy (less single-string picking and more strumming). Chorus would be something like (cadd9) D D-U [mute] (g) D... U-D D D-U - repeat for the F and D or F and G afterwards. That's the BASIC rhythm with lots of improv/variation thrown in by Ed.
Wow. This was a really incredible tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to figure this out, record, and then post it. I think it's within my playing ability, but figuring it out is W-A-A-A-Y beyond me. So this sounds like it's going to be really fun to practice. Thanks again for sharing all your work. Really, really incredible job. Marc.
Dude you jumped in difficulty at 2:00! I can do all the hammering on bits and picking, but I can't tell when the up-strums are taking place in between the picking.

Not likely to happen. I can't see how much clearer I could be, between this and the tab file, it should be pretty clear exactly what's happening. (particularly whne I move the guitar right up to the camera). If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them, but I don't plan on revisiting this song.
That's what the tab file is for. It should be fairly obvious between the video and the tab where fingers go (if it's not obvious, that usually means it doesn't much matter
the second chord in the main verse progression for Falling is tabbed out as:
024200...I think it is technically called a B7sus2 or something like that.(you can also mute the low E string, I can't remember off the top of my head...it doesn't matter either way too much, I don't think).
On the tab on your website, it says the Fmaj13 is 100011, not 100010, and it's tabbed that way for both Ed's part and Steve's part. Which one's correct? Also, it sounds like Ed's muting the 1st string in the bathroom version. What's the deal there?
douchebag. just because he's better at guitar than you ever will be at anything doesn't give you the right to tell him he sucks balls. to put it in terms you can understand, stfu noob, else someone's gonna have to track you down over the internet, come to your home, and kick your ass.
i could never figure out how other people--and how ed plays it. i have my way, which is a little different but still sounds extemely similar to how ed does it (but then, there are so many different ways to play this song and make it sound right, in my opinion--ive seen so many tabs that work pretty well).

Outstanding video, great lesson. All "how-to" guitar video lessons should be this good. Many thanks.

Awesome. Thank you very much for doing this. Can you do the same thing for Some Fantastic? In the style of this video if possible.

Do you ever sing this song? If you do, what do you change about your playing? Do you simplify it when you sing?

How long have you played? You sound amazing.

I'm afraid I am incredibly lazy on guitar... most of the time I will swap out licking for a clumsy mess of strumming XD

Most D's in the song are D/F# - 20023x or 0 on the E. See the tab.

Man that was cool maybe a little more explanation on the picking and muting. Also doing some fantastic would be so sweet.

i could never figure out how other people--and how ed plays it. i have my way, which is a little different but still sounds extemely similar to how ed does it (but then, there are so many different ways to play this song and make it sound right, in my opinion--ive seen so many tabs that work pretty well).
