not sure why the debate about what this song is about. At first, Vervepipe said it was about a suicide but then admitted it was about when a band member and his girlfriend chose to have an abortion. they confirmed it during an interview - search out "song facts freshman"
@DNAngel20089 Very generally it's about not wanting to commit to someone. The girl gets pregnant, he doesn't want the baby and doesn't want marriage ("Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice"). Later she kills herself over the break-up and abortion ("... took a weeks worth of valium and slept").
The song is about the guy's regret. From feeling guilty, to saying it's her fault, to denying it was even him (saying "my friend" when talking about himself).
@DNAngel20089 The song is loosely based on a true story that happened to one of the band members, but there was a lot of poetic license taken with the song. Like I don't think the girl actually killed herself, but there was an abortion.
that moment when you realize that this song adequately describes your experience with young love, and then later when you realize the only way to move on is to forgive, forgive yourself and them, we didn't know any better
@YUPimBrandy lol i was havin the same problem i think vix got it though it makes sense.
she was touchin her face.. like she liked it or was okay with them having sex, and the result was this, andsince she was okay with it he claims he cant be held responsible
@jondoc1 She committed suicide. When they broke up, he dealt with it by taking a vacation for a week and she took a weeks worth of valium (which is a lethal dosage) and never woke up. He feels guilty for her death and deals with that guilt throughout his adulthood. Now that hes older he cant believe how foolish he was for thinking that his decisions would never bring harm to people, especially himself. Hes angry at his ignorance that he thought he was so wise when he was only a freshman.
@NodotheLurker I think it's a reference to her being seductive- touching her lips and stuff. They got caught up in the relationship and they ended up with her pregnant.
According to the Verve Pipe's FAQ, guitarist and lead singer Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend committing suicide. However, according to an external interview site, Vander Ark revealed that the suicide was poetic license; the real incident which inspired the song was when his pregnant girlfriend had an abortion.

So its about an abortion. Thats so sad. No one should have to go through this...
First off, this song isn't by Jay Brannan. It was written in the 90s by a band called the Verve Pipe. It's a loosely biographical song about high school. The part about "a week's worth of valium and slapped him" IS indeed about a suicide. "Stop a baby's breath" is also about an abortion. Finally, this song pales in comparison to the original, especially because the last notes of the verse riff are wrong, not to mention the fact that he fails to capture the emotion encapsulated in the original.
@raoul400 I have to disagree, I feel he does capture the emotion behind the song. And on your remark about the riff being wrong, that's what makes it his, as opposed to a stick-straight cover. If you're going to cover a song, make it your own. I hate hearing covers of songs that sound just like the original, that's boring. Jay brought his own uniqueness to this song and I think that's wonderful.
the song is about the original maker of the song whose band is the verve pipe. his girlfriend had a abortion and they got ripped apart because of it. and the second verse is about his friend who broke up with his girl, went on a vacation, and then while he was on vacation she killed her self.
@maddysbamful I think that it does cause it says that he can't be held responsible, but then again she could have become an addict. i think its just really upto how the listener feels at the time.
@jondoc1 The backstory to the song is that because she ended up aborting the baby (stopped a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice), she committed suicide because of her guilt. The singer doesn't want to be held responsible for all the mistakes, and blames it on their youth.
@maddysbamful Yes she does, cause the lyrics say, can't believe we die for our sins, we were merely freshman, and the guy says he never really wept. idk in my own interpretation i think she does.
Stay strong my young lovers. Love is the seed, sex is the flower, compassion is the fragrance. Love is not some easily produced emotion, it is a compassionately sincere expression of being. Unity and love are the words of the hour, and blessed is he who works to this end.
@lilugo77 The stopped a baby's breath mean's she got an abortion and a shoeful of rice means they didn't get married because of the baby being gone. You know, throwing rice at a wedding.
@ralj1640 thank yooooou i couldnt figure it out i was going crazy lol. what does he mean when she was touching her face? i dont know if that has a meaning or if its just a verse.. idk help if you can please lol
He is a singing artist. He must be poor. But it is more important to be happy! :)
