He could pass like no one else when his team needed that - averaging 13.9 assists per game in 84-85 (more than Magic Johnson has ever done in a single season). He could also score like mad when that's what his team needed - he scored 25 points in the 3rd quarter alone, in a finals game vs the Lakers. He could force opposing guards to travel with his aggressive defense. So essentially - he was the best all-around guard (small guy) ever.

The Suns never missed the playoffs once with Kidd at the helm. They have twice with Nash. Jason Kidd was the greatest Suns point gaurd and the best point guard the past 17 seasons.

Don't forget that the PG and SG positions are the ones in the league where most help is required. The fastest players in the leagueplay at those positions. A competent NBA player will get past the first defender at those positions, even against guys like prime Bruce Bowen, Scottie Pippen, Ron Artest, etc.

Dirk before he turned into a good defender, Amare (who is both a weak defensive rebounder AND has mostly been a horrific defensive player throughout his career), playing alongside Shawn Marion at the 4 which was a large defensive liability much of the time against scoring PFs...Nash wasn't ever really a bad defender, just not a particularly prolific player at picking passing lanes, which is how most PGs make a defensive rep.
Charles Barkley is right father time is undefeated...but Nash has a couple years left lets hope the Suns miraculously get nasty and go on one more playoff run

Finals even though Amare was injured and absent from the playoffs, and Joe Johnson also left the team. Nash went to Western Conf Finals with Marion and newly acquired Diaw basically.

In a Suns uniform Jason Kidd had 655 steals in 4 and a half seasons. Steve Nash has 473 steals in 7 seasons as the Suns point guard. Kidd has 182 more steals in 2 and a half less seasons. The Suns never missed the playoffs once with Kidd at the helm. They have twice with Nash. Jason Kidd was the greatest Suns point gaurd and the best point guard the past 17 seasons.

Kidd never missed the playoffs in Phoenix though like Nash has. You would think a two time MVP would be able to make the playoffs every season.

He played in a much, much tougher conference then Kidd did when he led the Nets to the Finals. Nash has led the #1 offense in the league for 9 years in a row, something Kidd has never done.

He dragged them to 40 wins by himself. Look at this adjusted +/- ratings over the past 5 yrs. He's had the 2nd highest net effect on his team, only behind LeBron. Dirk is 3rd, Dwight 4th, and KG 5th. And you can't blame the Suns defensive struggles on Nash: they give up MORE points when he's OFF the floor.

He's not a good defender, and but he's not a terrible one. He moves his feet, plays excellent help defense, and is always one of the leaders in charges taken. PG/SG defense is far less important than big man defense, because a good offensive guard will beat their defender the majority of the time no mater who is guarding them

@iheartnonamejane Nash's defensive failings have been wildly exaggerated. He's not a GREAT defender but he's still a solid one. He moves his feet, he brings timely help, he takes charges. Don't forget that the PG and SG positions are the ones in the league where most help is required. The fastest players in the leagueplay at those positions. A competent NBA player will get past the first defender at those positions, even against guys like prime Bruce Bowen, Scottie Pippen, Ron Artest, etc.

Jason Kidd had 1569 rebounds in 4 and a half seasons in a Suns uniform as the point gaurd. Nash has 1629 in 7 seasons as Suns point gaurd. Nash has 60 more rebounds than Kidd with almost 3 full seasons more under his belt as the starting point gaurd. Nash is so overrated. His teams always gives up 110 points a game. Dirk before he turned into a good defender, Amare (who is both a weak defensive rebounder AND has mostly been a horrific defensive player throughout his career), playing alongside Shawn Marion at the 4 which was a large defensive liability much of the time against scoring PFs...Nash wasn't ever really a bad defender, just not a particularly prolific player at picking passing lanes, which is how most PGs make a defensive rep.
