  • This recording and the one of the Busoni transcription of Bach's Chaconne were made when Rubinstein was 83(!) The fire and majesty of his playing would have been remarkable for a pianist half that age. We tend to think of Rubinstein as "a Chopin specialist," maybe THE Chopin specialist. Actually, he was an amazingly adaptable musician who often gave us near-definitive performances of a great range of music and styles. These are among his best late recordings.
