  • @fbrad1 I'm pretty sure it is a spade. A spade is designed to cut into the ground, whereas a shovel simply scoops material from a pile to somewhere else (adding coal to a boiler for example). Shovels usually have sides bent up slightly and an angle between the handle and the blade, but a spade's blade is almost completely parallel to the handle to allow better transmission of force from the user to the cutting edge.
