I think most of you are missing the point of the songs title. If we all paid enough taxes the government would be able to look after everyone and charity (at least domestic charity) would be unnecessary. However we prefer charity as a means of helping people as it makes us feel good about ourselves even though it achieves less.

This song is about being in a relationship with someone who won't do enough to connect with you daily but expects praise for every small kindness they give you.

You could read a million things into these lyrics. For a song that is so simply structured, it has such a level of depth and potential for analysis. And what's so great about it is, whether you analyse it to bits, or you don't read anything into it at all, it still tugs at you...
