I have yet to meet a Tool fan who knows what this song is about. Shame. Have a bunch of idiots follow you out of a trend instead of for what you say. None of them know anything about you. What a legacy, huh? It's about speaking up about things. CHALLENGING. Arguing. Finding beauty in the dissonance, lack of agreement. If I get insulted, it'll be because most Tool fans don't know what this song is about, Maynard would encourage outside viewpoints. He's a Leary fan. Third Eye live Salival.
@JFAcoustic You obviously have no clue what this song is about. The lyrics. It's about thinking for yourself. Even when you know the pieces fit, stir shit up. Get people thinking. Challenge things. Argue about things. Finding beauty in the dissonance, lack of agreement. Go against the popular vote. Go against yourself and your own beliefs. Self-actualize. Most Tool fans have no idea what Maynard is talking about, they follow out of trend instead of what he stands for it. It's a shame.
@xTheWorldNeedsAHerox Yeah, I listened to the lyrics. I was simply pointing out how the video doesn't really match up with the song. I read the lyrics as well. I think that this song points out a lot of cool things, but the video is kind of freaky.
All you did was contradict yourself. The music is for you to interpret, so why are you telling everyone what its about and how to view it? You're just as bad as the people that just listen to it because its cool, which has been over for a long time, kids have moved on. Just listen to the damn music, and if you are on your own path away from popular trendiness, why fuck do you care about the people that aren't? They aren't ever going to be on your path, just leave them be.
@xTheWorldNeedsAHerox What do you mean nice try, everything i said was true. Leave people alone, they aren't changing any time soon. And if you are going to just slam on people who like like things for different reasons then you, stop. That's not how you should share what you think. You're just as much of a problem as the people you like to put down.
John F. Kennedy once said "We intend to accept full responsibility for our errors, and we expect you to point them out." That's the point I made with Maynard and Timothy Leary. You still don't get it. I'm the solution.
@xTheWorldNeedsAHerox A solution to what exactly? Nothing is as cut and dry as you think. So your "solution" has no ground to even begin to come to fruition. What is it you think you are solving by telling everyone how to listen to music? You know, if everyone believes the same, acts the same, thinks the same, we stop being what we are, human. So, are you a free-thinking individual, or a, as Maynard likes to put it, sheep? Music doesn't come with instructions, why are you making some?
@caspercaspian its not supposed to.. id love to know of a time when half of maynards songs legitly made sense.. yes, they have meaning, and a fundamental understanding.. but ive always had to listen to them about 5,000 times to understand it lol. but hey, his music is so amazing, doesn't bother me any :)
this song is entirely about the band!! - "point the finger, blame the other to bring the pieces back together, to rediscover communication!!" and "Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication!!!!!"
Id doubt it. if the word "lovers" comes up that many times in a song chances are maynard wrote it about a woman he was involved with, not the band, since he word "lovers" means sex.
the message of tool saying that everything in the universe used to fit together but now it has fallen apart because of our society.....beautiful message that not alot of people can understand yet still a awesome song
@mitxke yes exactly and if people would actually keep that message theyre trying to make in mind while watching the video it would make alot more sense to them
@AnimusArgentis it's true though because there are people out there that think smoking driving cars and making noise is fun equaling up to disrupting the natural things in life

I show the girl this song when she asked me about what kind of music im into. she liked it. or maybe she just said that because she liked me. now, i dont relly belive she get this profoundly... but maybe i say this cuz im angry at her...i cant really tell the truth... we really should rediscover communication..
Maynard is a smart man, he somehow is able to put into words what you're thinking or feeling. He gives a reason behind what it is you're thinking or feeling. I wish more of the world were as open to the meaning behind our actions as he is.
I have yet to find a band that is better at transitioning sounds in their songs. The bridges and transitions in Tools songs are just freaking incredible. The dynamic they can build into an arrangement is masterful.

I fail more horribly at anything related ot music than you do, most likely. But I have perfect hearing and I can remember melodies and complicated musical patterns because I remember whole patterns well.
in my opinion this song is about figuring out whether the relation ship with the one you "love" is love in fact or is it lust or maybe its about how us ash umans are going about life in the wrong manor
i think it's about whole humanity, the way we conduct our lives - its all wrong, once the pieces fit, but now its chaos... but for sure there can be the state of harmony in ourselves..but we have to change our global thinking...

But my agreeance to this music video remains 100%. Communication is a most important tool and ability.
