I am so wierd! Elgar and Tchaikovski are my favourite composers - imagine that! an Englishman and a Russian! Elgar managed to take his love for Caroline and put that feeling in its purest essence on paper - brilliant!
I enjoy listening to this piece of Elgar's delightful music while looking at a video of the gloriously beautiful countryside of England - what a truly wonderful combination - so soothing, especially as it makes me so glad to be living in that lovely countryside in the part of England where Sir Edward Elgar lived - close to the marvellous Malvern Hills.
Ooh so beautiful// this sends wonderful emotions coursing though me... I am almost crying ow... Absolutely wonderful... What a maestro and musician Elgar was at his craft... AND of course his 'Enigma Variations' too... AMAZING... STUNNING... Awe-inspiring and many other words that this music has pushed to the back of my mind.. *sighs and listens again*
thats perfect...he put all his love in just some notes and strings, it should be umbelivable the feeling between elgar and his wife, an explosion of pure love that even Edith Piaf wouldnt reach
Esta hermosísima obra de Elgar tiene una versión para canto. Su título es "Pansies". Si alguno tuviera una grabación de dicha canción le estaría infinitamente agradecido si la pudiera subir o si me lo hiciera conocer.
It might be a musical "trifle" to some, but it lingers in the memory long after longer, more "approved of" pieces are long forgotten (or willingly forgotten).
@harrythepiano AT last somebody else who gets pissed off by people who call a TUNE a song. It can't be a song if no-one is singing, but you can't tell them!!!!
Maybe, long ago, true love existed because they made it exist, but now, true love is only a fleeting moment in the steams of passion, too brief to notice or to take hold of.
Love this piece, makes me feel like I can feel again.
Haunting and intensely moving .Deeply stirs an unfamiliar nostalgia for me. Curiously, it saddens me. Interesting experience Thank you for making it available .
@Maasikas77777 Just because you're a musician doesn't mean you can feel the music you play. It took me just 5 years to grasp the meaning of feeling music. I was playing Mendelssohn's concerto when I was 12 when i really -felt- it.
@CMDmusic Feeling music is the most important thing for me in music and I never perform before I have done it with a piece. I feel music every time I do it. I have seen too many people just playing the notes and I really dislike it. The one thing I am famous of is that I feel music.
I just helped my 11 year old Nephew do a report in this song and when I asked him what his thoughts were when he just were to listen to the music it's self he started to cry. Wow at 11 years old a child to feel that kind of emotion towards a song blows my mind. I my self Love this song but now I have another generation loving it also =)
i played this piece with my girlfriend..she played the violin and me the piano..so while playing it we got closer and closer and got together finally x)
It's such a beautiful piece (and insanely hard on the piano if you have the original sheet music), and I can't wait to learn it on the violin someday.
I play this in D rather than E. It is one of my favourite 'musing' pieces, because it is not technically difficult, but only sounds lovely if you put the emotion in it. You really have to feel it. Th is is a really beautiful recording, by the way.

sometimes i wonder if people today can love the way elgar did. He composed this for his wife and in truth, it sounds fleeting and very passionate, like first love, but it has the overtone of TRUE love, of a love which will last the years. Elegant, simple, and very frivolous but the passion put in its performance makes it sound eternal. Does this love exist anymore? It's so hard to find anything so beautiful.
@classifieds103 A beautiful comment. I believe the word you are looking for is "pure". In today's music and culture, fleeting gratification of appetite is put above INTENSE LONGING AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE WHOLE PERSON, BODY AND SOUL. Elgar's love sought to connect with another living soul; his passion sought the "Other", not himself.
Yes, this love does exist today, but is becoming increasingly rare due to the hedonism of our nihilist culture.
@AchillesShield totally agree. The modern interpretation of "love" calls for a sadistic, parasitic bond between two people. It's not the act of selfless transfiguration it used to be.
@classifieds103 true.. it's hard to find something so true as his love for his wife.. keep this spirit on.. i believe there are still true and pure love..
@classifieds103 it's good to see that there are still some that think like you do. i always play this when i want to convince myself that true love still exists. unfortunately, it's only a dream, an assumption that i make and that ends right at the end of the piece.
@shurubelr oh it exists alright. True love exists, it just so happens that most people can't find it. Especially when most people in today's culture are too worried about egoistic needs and "filling in the emptiness" of their own lives. The life of a married couple today is 50% more like projection rather than love. A cure for the most horrid of pestilence exists, just so happens that it hasn't been discovered.
@classifieds103 omg that is soooo true!!! i wish i was her!! .......*sigh*...... i would just love is if my husband wrote me songs that were filled with so much passion!!! but im not married, n i dont think my boyfriend will.... sadly. :/ *sigh*
@classifieds103 I totally agree with you. You hear so much about love in books and you grow up hearing about knights in shining armor and all that but it all has such a superficial overtone. This...the sheer expresion and feeling in it is truly amazing. It's put into sound but not into words.
@classifieds103 I totally agree with you. You hear so much about love in books and you grow up hearing about knights in shining armor and all that but it all has such a superficial overtone. This...the sheer emotion and feeling in it is truly amazing. It's put into sound but not into words.

its so beautiful.
does any body have the sheet music for this piece and/or for quartet?

IMSLP has a large number of public domain sheet music. As for a quartet, the piece should not be tremendously difficult to arrange.

Perhaps a sentimental trifle, yet a lovely one, and the performance posted here makes very pleasant listening.
