Strongly disagree with those that say Lawrence cannot sing. I love his singing and his lyrics and cannot imagine another type of voice singing these songs. His voice is absolutely essential to the what makes the music so uniquely powerful and beautiful. This is Art at a very high level and that is the reason that it it not popular. I for one am glad he would never pass audition for American Idol.
I think the reason Felt never got as big as the Smiths or the Cure is because they take a little time to grow on you; there's not much immediate captivation of the simple mind with them; no easy hooks or flashy gimmicks.
Mr. Robert Smith listened to Felt a lot. And never felt any shame for ripping them off just a little bit sometimes for his songs. That's love, i might say
Sorry but have to disagree - brilliant musicians, very good lyrics, great tunes - but very limited singing - appalling so sometimes. I have posted the same sorts of comments in response to similar questions - why werent they bigger? what is wrong with the listening public? and so on and so forth .Because noone seemed to mention the elephant in the room.
@WilliamRufus100 But what about Robert Smith. Lets assume that you are right about the voice. Well, what about Robert Smith of The Cure. Or Mark E. Smith of The Fall. Lawrence's voice is at the very least at their level.

I know why they didnt become big - speaking as someone who bought three of their albums and who think they are good. Its his voice, extremely limited , tuneless, mumbling and off putting
This entire album is extremely good. Brilliant guitar work on all angles throughout it...and A Preacher In New England is one of the best instrumentals ever
I have played this song so many times over the years and its magic never wears off. It is also a reminder of carefree student years, happy times! Yeah, and Deebank was seriously lost to a wider public whereas so many talentless wankers get so much attention.
I saw them play in 1988 in London. They were a studio band, and the most uninviting band ever. They played for 20 minutes max. They looked desperate to get off stage... despite the adoring fans. Still, a fantastic band.... top 5 UK 80s bands.
I like the Smiths, but I love the felt infinitely more. It shows you how stupid the world is that this band never became as big as Smiths or The Cure.
absolutely beatiful--as good as it was when it first came out

Smiths is different from Felt in their musical missions! Both Johnny and Maurice are genius but Lawrence is better than Morrisey!

WilliamRufus100 has put variations of that same comment on many Felt tracks on youtube.
Lawrence's voice compliments his lyricism and Deebanks guitar-work brilliantly.

a bit like tom verlaine and television... one of the best of the cbgb's scene yet one of the less known and talked about.
