One of my favourite all time songs. Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck... especially as he dives into the solo at the end... So glad he went a little bit country after Dire Straits.. perfectly suited.

My dad has made me love him! He's listened to MK since 1986, and passively ive listening to him to for all my life as his records was played very often by my dad. And Now I realize that I live MK music.. Its amazing that Mark still makes brilliant music, he's not like most of the rockstars which make world-famous hits in their youth and sleep on their old laurels for the rest of their lifes. Cheers to Mark Knopfer, an amazing musician!

Knopfler weaves a magical re-working of a complex solo like this, so it's a little different every time he plays it. Vive la Difference! I personally think he should be chained-up and made to play guitar at least 20 hours a day, for the benefit of the rest of us - he can have a little sleep, but we can feed him with intravenous-drips...

Re the 'eargasm" and 'better than fucking', there are a number of pieces of music that fit these descriptions. The classic is Ravel's Bolero, and another is The Allman Brothers' Jessica. Sigmund Freud, where are you? Who could say after listening to Speedway that a racing car is just a racing car?

@coffeepoint Quite true. One great thing about Knopfler. It appears to me that many great musicians have sort of a "shelf life" when it comes to songwriting. Dylan hasn't written much at all in the last two decades for example. The Stones best work was when Mick Taylor was still with them. But Knopfler has a touch, a way of staying sharp regardless of age which I enjoy and respect.

Notice the change in the lyric ..."the brick yard's there to ....edify." This is in Rome. Think that "crucify" might have been a little insensitive. The guy is always thinking!
