Why don't synth manufacturers make analog synths anymore? Using today's technology they could be better, stable, cheaper and would sell, sell, sell !!!
@synthlab Oh but they do. There are tons of different modern analog modular synth manufacturers (Doepfer, analogue systems, MOTM, modcan +++), the Prophet'08, Moog minimoog voyager/oldschool, lots of analog monosynths, Alesis Andromeda A6 (16 voice pure analog oscillators and filters). Just because Roland doesn't make analogs anymore doesn't mean they don't exist :)
The JP-4 version I own uses the same VCO's & VCF's as the system 100m & 700. Mine is an early model, later models use the same VCF's as the JP6, JP8, JX3P, SH101 & Juno 6 & 60.
super demo des JP4, zeigst genau das was er am besten kann :) hatte auch mal einen, ist aber schon lange weg, leider. Verrückt was die eheute kosten. Das Video editing finde ich auch sehr stylish, gelungen. Danke. weiter so ! gefällt mir ^^
@AnalogAudio1 Well, you have to open the JP4, check the voice cards and read the service manual to check if your Jupiter has the IR3109 filter or the BA one (first SH series). The voice cards had at least 3 revs, and one way to determine is the numbers and disposition of trimpots across the top. Hope this help ;)
@AnalogAudio1 Yes, There's remarkable differences between First Rev with Filter BA662 (same used on the first SH series, SH-2 etc) and IR3109 (Jupiter 8, SH-101 etc). With serial numbers starting at 912 seems to be one of the last Rev (with IR3109), however, boards may have been substituted and or modified over time, so you can't just go on serial number and to be sure, you must check the voice cards (trimpots).
Anyway, a jupiter 4 is still a great synth, no mater which Rev they are ;)
@gencom So which filter sounds better, the earlier BA662, or IR3109? I'm planning on getting a JP-4, but am not sure which revision to get.
If I were to assume, I'd say IR3109 (love the resonance of that thing).
From *what I heard* on a SH-09 (which uses BA662), the resonance was a little weak in comparison to IR3109. Not saying either is bad, I love old Rolands.
@raymangold22 Well, i can't answer to this question since it is a matter of taste. I personnaly prefere BA662 filter as used on early Roland synths such as SH-2, 09 etc
For me It sounds pretty more 70's but the filter is not the only thing that count in the sound, oscillators has an important part.
But as already said, no matter which JP4 you can get, both Revs (BA662 or IR3109) sounds great.
@gencom JP4 osc are discrete. It use uA726 chips. The same type chip the LAST revision of the Minimoog used. Same chips on the SH-2, SH-09 etc. So the filter is not the only thing in that 70's sound ;)
@gencom Do you have (or know of) any recordings of the first revision so that I may compare them to later revisions?
So far every JP-4 recording I heard on youtube, I'm pretty sure was done via IRC3109 (I know it pretty well from playing with my JUNO-60 all the time).
@raymangold22 No, sorry i don't and i would be realy glad to see a comparison. Almost all JP-4 on Youtube has IRC3109 chipset except one with BA662 filter (sorry, i can't add the link, it doesn't work. Send me message on my account if you want the link).
What a very nice vintage synth with a very good arpegiator and some nice effects as glide portamento ! Sounds look like other vintage Roland synthesizers as JU-6. Great !

one of the best synths ever made, gets overlooked by its bigger brother the JP-8 but the 4 imho is much more interesting and tonally superior.
