I think the problem is the at Jabulani ball is just TOO smooth.
The rougher surface of normal footballs creates small pockets of air around the ball during flight, which helps it travel straighter and with less influence from air resistance.
I know it sounds weird, but the smoother the ball, the more it is influenced by the air around it. That's why golf balls have those little dints in the surface.
By making the ball as 'round' as possible, they have also made it less stable in flight.

They had the "Tango", a perfectly good world cup ball that nobody complained about, which also had the most iconic design pattern, and they abandoned it after 98 in an attempt to re-invent the wheel, making progressively worse balls as a result, and finally succeeded in completely ruining the world cup because footballers who spent years calibrating their passes and shots with normal footballs suddenly had to play with a wobbly balloon. I bet they made a tidy profit though!

Instead of U.S. needing to learn to like soccer, maybe the rest of the world should learn why soccer is boring. Hopefully in my lifetime, everyone else will learn to mock soccer like the U.S..

It's actually less accurate because it swerves more on knuckleballs and curves less on shots with spin. Very hard to pick out a corner and bend it.
