I am currently recovering from social anxiety, working through a program called "Overcoming Social Anxiety - Step by Step". It's absolutely incredible, and if you stick to it you can certainly guarantee your success.
I can relate to you so incredibly.
But one thing I instantly noticed after watching your video was:
"Wow, it is absolutely impossible to see that this guy has any social anxiety". I only believed it based on how you explained your situation.

Hi everyone. I recently started a blog and video series on social anxiety. I have a PhD in psychology and a lot of experience helping people with social anxiety. My goal is for the videos to be interactive and to cover topics that are important for you, so I'll hope you'll check them out and give me feedback about your questions or topic you're interested in related to social anxiety.
im with you bro. No one knows about my social anxiety and like, ill try to talk to certain people about it but it never gets far because it seems like they dont care and its just hard to talk about it with someone who doesnt understand.you can talk to me anytime you need to bro
wow man your story sounds very similar to mine. It was such a big change going from christian schools to public. I hope your doing better because all of us with SA can overcome this. Peace and love.
@alriguez stfu!, yes everyone experiences anxiety from time to time but there is a different level of anxiety that mentally cripples many people, you can't just not think about it, it's stuck in your brain, you have work on it, it doesn't just go away
Where do you live bro maybe you need to make friends with other guys like you, and you won't have to feel so odd or different, you will be with people like you.... You will belong to a group. I imagine you don't have a lot of black friends.... Well you are not the only black guy with this issue. Austin tx
Social anxiety is actually what happens when people, i.e. the human race, begins to live in a convenience oriented world where there is no need for hunting anymore. If humans don´t have to go hunting, the most important option for making new friends is taken away. Personally, I think our ancestors had a much better social life a million years ago. They didn´t live as long and they had no medicine, but today we pay a high price for that. So, either your parents have friends, or --> born loser.
Suffer from anxiety or depression? I made a completely free website, with free live chat, blogs and a community for people like me who just can't afford mental help. Please join us: anxietykeep.weebly.com
Mate, you seem like one cool chilled cat. I wouldn't worry about changing your expression, its a really nice one.
You could look into mindfullness meditation to quiten your mind and anxiety so when it comes to more challenging situations like group / public speaking your be more centred on the inside.
This is very sad situation, peoples cant live there lives. U want to do so many things but u cant becuz of the fear. It makes u feel uncomfortable and weak. I have social phobia. This is keeping me away from wanting to be a dj and having a girlfriend. I took days off from work becuz of this I get sweaty and nervous around new people.
i started having fobia 2007 up to now. my issue is fear of sweating in cluding my hands my face. by the time i think about that i will have sweat on my face, then i start swaeting. this ocuurs during the calss, meeting some new friends. the funny thing is im good of school. my grades are better, to be hounest with u im very wise man but what pulled me down is social fobia. God may help me!!!!!!!!
Hey Chris, I think it's pretty awesome that you were able to make and post this video even though you have social anxiety . Go you! =D I know you made this video a few years ago but I hope you're doing better with your disorder.
u needa pray about it brah your situation is similar to mine but set goals and keep your mind on them they are like pillows in life (but thats just me )
You need to keep moving, no matter how you feel, no matter how hard it is to get out of bed, no matter how hard it is to feel wanted, loved, etc..
As long as your moving, you have a chance to balance out the crappy mental state we were given. I'm Way older and all my life.
Never stop, keep fighting, even when you feel that the end is near. "It's tempting to sit and wait for life to come to you. But it can't, it's too busy. Life is out there. You have to go for it." ~Harry Beckwith
Fish oil and a vitamin b complex helped me tremendously though!! they are both known to reduce anxiety (and depression). it'll take a week or so to notice but take them consistently and give it a chance! goodluck! you're not alone
@turnupthegood55 I take Omegas everyday and had constantly used B complex. Don't seem to help here, BUT...they are important to your body, metablolism, mind, etc.. so I won't stop taking them.
I am glad they worked for you. Never stop, keep fighting, even when you feel that the end is near. "It's tempting to sit and wait for life to come to you. But it can't, it's too busy. Life is out there. You have to go for it." ~Harry Beckwith
I believe my anxiety began from the way men would treat me. I used to are about my appearance, but I received too many "hey mame" comments, so now I don't go out and I wear clothes that are two sizes too big. It's killing me to spend my life in my apartment and only go out for work and college. I used to be so socialable too and I was told I'm pretty but I don't see it. It's good to know I'm not alone. Please continue to make videos.
@ord2jpn I totally understand who you are ord2jpn. I am considered a good catch to females, but like you, I spend my time as a loner. Always have been since I was young.
I am probably a bit older and have done more in my past than most that don't suffer, but the older I get, the worse it seems to get. I used to balance out this crappy mental state with focusing on helping others.
But with age comes less time you have for yourself, which only adds to the problem. The best to you ord..
Heart to heart. You've inspired me to make a video blog discussing about my social anxiety disorder as well. You have such courage to do this. Thank you.
@MRBBJC Thank you for your comments. I am a bit older than you and just now starting to deal with it, through counseling.
When I was younger, I dealt with this mental state, by staying active, helping others, etc. But the older I get, I realized that I just balanced out the anxiety with good works helping kids and others.
Now I have to deal with it, probably due to mid life crisis, regrets, etc... that just add to the whole anxiety crap. I would say, stay healthy, keep moving, never stop.
I think i have this. I go all day not talking very much, and when i do talk its incredibly difficult..im goin to college now and its really hard to make friends..i dnt know what to do. im not ugly or anything, im just different as it is.. and im scared that people will reject my different personality.just look at my videos lol..thats me at home. im completely different at college. Im quiet and akward...its horrible and ruining my life. i hav so much potential..SA is the only thing in my way.
Im dealing with s.a.d and can totally relate to what you are going through. Im now 31 and can totally remember those days of school when you would have to get up and introduce yourself and being unable to hardly even get through that, my voice would get shaky and couldnt hardly talk. My s.a.d. was so bad ive almost commited suicide several times, i have seriously had a gun in my mouth more than once. All i can say is if you dont have s.a.d you dont understand what its like.
Yea im shy...i prefer to use that term instead of being like the majority of Americans who suffer from 'quick to diagnose people with some fucking disorder'...erm.... disorder LMFAO...Pray, Exercise, it will make it better..I dont know the complete answer i still have alot of nervousness and disdain for teamwork and shit like that, but ive gotten alot more confident with age, Thanks to the great spirit of God. But yea tryna rep myself more and not give a rats ass what niggas say i know its hard

hey man keep your head up i got this anxiety to and had to here ppl all the time ask why do i talk so slow or turn there heads to look at me when i talked and bad social skills also dont help
Black people get anxiety ? THIS IS MADNESS !! ok all jokes aside :p I dunno , we all have a little bit of social anxiety , but it's hard too get outside for me , once I'm outside It's all cool .xD
This takes SO much courage....I have SAD as well and have struggled with it my whole life. I get nervous walking by anyone and I look at people from the corners of my eye. I'm very fearful of people and afraid of not ever making any real connections with people. I pray that God finds a way to help us both and that he will provide for us the quality of life and living that we - and other SAD sufferers - deserve. Thank u so much for representing us well.
he is an inspiration,im a freshmen in high school and have this anxiety you speak of. even walkin in the halls takes all my guts and it really pisses me off..that my body cant be one with my mind and is always panicing over nothing like wtf right? starts in the lower stomach and works its way up..all i know is its complte bull*** amd i want rid of it!!
Were you vaccinated as a child? You sound like you have symptoms of mercury poisoning common in autistic people. Zeolite powder will help you greatly. Its very cheap.
I think you are a very brave guy..and I get that same feeling in class when the professor says to introduce ourselves my heart starts pumping so fast that it hurts i hate it.
i understand completely what you are going through, I am in the first year of university and i feel anxiety everyday from rerouting me schedule at school to avoid all contact with people to not volunteering in class. I feel the pain you speak of every day. i had this issue all my life and im going to university to become a psychologist in order to help people with these same issues. I love the fact that you were able to come forward and speak about the issue. your video was inspirational
I was thinking of doing the same thing ..but do u think that being a psychologist would cause anxiety for ones self cuz u would have to interact with people face to face..what do u think?
Pills, therapy, books about the subconcious mind etc you name it. In my experience I can truly testify that only The Living GOD has healed me. Medications from doctors helped me a little and it was temporary. God's healing power is ETERNAL! Now Im not an antidepressant pill dependent. The cure for fear is FAITH! Fear limits you. FAITH ENABLES YOU! People, THE ALMIGHTY GOD IS YOUR ONLY HOPE. READ THE WORD OF GOD, HAVE FAITH AND OBEY! God loves you and He wants you to LET HIM...
Learn pickup, no really I am serious, search ---Mystrey PUA--- or "Style PUA" here in youtube. Buys their books, these guys are fan and they have so many important suggestions. It helped me when it comes to my fear of women. But in the process I became a social person.
i have social anxiety but i have no idea how to cure it.... im 16 years old and ive sufferd with it for years..... im actually 16 now.. and ive suffered with it for about a few years.. when i was young i was funny, out going, and talkative, maybe a little to talkative lol.... you remind me of myself!
I suffer from social anxiety as well. I suffer from panic attacks everyday at school. I am in 12th grade and everyday my face will turn red when someone asks me the simplest question. It really is ruining my life. I dont think it would be that bad if my face just wouldnt turn red because that just shows everybody how humiliated you feel when youve just been asked a simple question
use it to your advantage. it's a gift. you have insight into this problem because it's so close to you... understand it.. and use it to help others who suffer. there is always hope.
I've got the same thing, been dealing with it for over 10 years now. Its debilitating but you're brave for uploding this. I applaud you man. Keep your chin up.
I know how you feel and it took courage to open up on YouTube. When I first felt the symptoms of Social Phobia back in 1972...there was noYouTube...I dont even think there was any social phobia LOL maybe I was the first human to get it!! anyways I stil suffer the thoughts but the anxious/shaky part is helped by drugs
I know how u feel. No medication will work because it's the vicious circle of negative thoughts in our heads that we need to change. Medication can't change our thoughts. we have to try and monitor the thoughts we have when out in social situations and try and challenge them. when you get a thought like 'everyones looking at me' LOOK AROUND YOU and say 'is everyone really looking at me?' try it just once and get back to me to tell me what happens! x
Thanx for posting this video man...i suffer from this too. Its like the worst feeling in the world...its so dificult for me to go to highschool, i skip highschool many days of week, and its so hard to tell some one about your feelings. U r brave brother. I would not be able to post a video, but i am glad u did post a vid, coz people with this wont feel alone, so thanx for this...and cheer up ur a beautiful person like me, like others who feels like this...hopefully we all one day get cured <3
aww i went through the same thing :/ i used to move a lot as well. my mum wasnt that well so she would move me 24/7... and whenever i first came to a new school i would be very scared and start crying... people got fed up. after a while i kind of got used to just holding back the tears.
Tbh i have friends in the school im at now but i still feel alone at times :/ and im always last picked for things etc... so yh its very difficult. I try and get through it though. i hope things are ok now :(
I dont have SA ( i dont think) but i do get realy nervous around people sometimes. I am with you on the part of where you said that your professor said to introduce yourself. Alot of my teachers have said the same thing, and i just feel lost. You are not alone, and you can get through this.
I've got severe social phobia since jr. high(I'm 43 now). I could never do a video like this because my anxiety/ low self esteem is so bad I don't want anyone to see my face. You did a great job! What an inspiration!!!
one of the best things to do is learning deep relaxation before forth coming events, and the best relaxation technique to do so is Yoga Nidra, it helps with all sorts of nervousness, fear and stress related issues by way of balancing and harmonising both brain hemispheres as well as relaxing the body perfectly. Its always available on ebay, look for the title
i have the same situation kinda... i just moved here from north carolina- i wass really outgoing and talkative, then i moved to illinois and i got a little depressed and i cant like talk to people and im self consious and i flinch from anxiety - its just really weird
It's just as common amongst Black people. I suspect it might be worse because of all the socially negative perceptions of us that only make our insecurities worse.
OMG i totally agree! i am black and i have had S.A.D for about 10 years now. Im 23. I moved far away to a very racist town when i was 10 and it was so very hard growing up. I was socially isolated not only by the students but by the faculty of my schools as well.
I never got the courage to get help but, i encourage all of you to. Sadly I am filled with regrets and have never even kissed anyone untill very recently.
Thankfully it seems that after 10 long years my social phobias are residing.
Yes, but I always get the SAME reaction "Oh don't worry I get nervous and shy too" I think its hard for most people to understand the extent of this phobia, how much it effects alotta areas of life.
maybe not the ideal solution, but if psychological treatments doesn´t work,
propranolol+benzodiazepin will do the trick. Propranolol is heart med, and benzo are anti-anxiety. I only take this combi when I have to go to social gatherings, public speaking. I helps, just don´t use benzoes more than absolutely necessary.
Pity is the shittiest state you can have. Do yourself a favor and see where in your body do you feel "social anxiety". Stop assuming what you THINK fear is, and STOP looking for Logical explanations to justify staying home. Just observe the raw feeling of anxiety as it unfolds through your body... label it: is it changing? or is it stable? Eventually that emotion will break down and dissapear forever! This is called equanimity (But it's more complex)
Man, i go through the same thing....i know its a scary thing to think about, but if you truly want to defeat this you need to talk to a doctor to get you into an anxiety clinic...take it one day at a time pimp, take care of yourself
i hate how i analyse everything i do !i have the same problems if sumone was to ask me to introduce myself to the class id be so nervous and the build up for it to my turn would be like AHHHH..
i serioulsy hate presentations. Ive had about 5 in school this term and i have felt so horrible and its crippling cuz i want to have the confidence to do it! =(..neway i gave it a shot and i got through them all..sumhow..=O
You weren't kidding when you said you calmed down, that was a very calm video haha, well anyway man what can I say that hasn't been said, I'm currently building up the balls to tell my parents about this and then seek professional help, I think I'm just going to show my parents a few of these youtube videos and hopefully let them do the explaining for me, good luck mate.
Just checked out the first ten minutes of the first ep and, wow, I can't believe there is an anime like this. Been looking for an anime like this for a while. Guess I am hikikomori for real. Thanks for suggesting this, I'm pretty sure now I'm going to end up watching the whole series, haha.
Yeah man it's one of the best anime I've ever seen. I could identify myself in everything the main character does, especially his major avoidance tendencies his numerous addictions to forget about his situation...
I hope you enjoy it and yes, thanks for the vids, I can't find the words to describe the effect it had on me...
Wow, I never thought to look for a show like that. It's really good! Hits a bunch of nails on the head. Social Anxiety, Reclusion, Denial, Addictions, Etc... NHK is good stuff.
You're a real ass dude bro, don't ever forget that. You just have to keep ur head up high and beleive in yourself. Anxiety is caused by negative thoughts...You should try the program "attacking anxiety" by Lucinda Basset, My mom had anxiety and did the program and she feels much better.
Damn that sucks bro, in some small way we all deal with this. You seem like a pretty smart dude, and that might be part of the reason your so self aware all the time (ignorance is bliss type of deal). Mind over matter!! scratch the medicine, just tackle it in your head, put yourself in situations you fear. good luck brother!
I know what your going through! I have been going through this since I was about 13 my self Im now 18.just being around my close family makes me nervous I used to be normal I had lots of friends and I was very social I loved being around people.
I understand completely. I get on well with a very small number of people, but find it impossible to connect with almost everyone I meet. In any social situation when I'm around a person I don't know, I get VERY nervous and can't think of anything to say. I'm so tired of sitting there silently while everyone else is chatting and having fun, so sick of people assuming im uptight or weird. Even with friends and family, I quickly 'run out' of things to say and have these awkward periods of silence.
im in soph year in high school and when i moved in 8th gr i started having this problem.i used to b outgoing, had many friends, and I talked to evryone but then i moved in 8th grade, everyone already knew each other from before, and there were 5x more people. after 8th,9th gr. i never made any friends. I was always so scared to talk to people and thinking they would think im weird. id hide, and when people invite me tlk to them,id go reluctntly, knowinthat i would screw up
now that i think about it, my social anxiety is still kind of bad, lost all my friends, only talk to family, im 16 and i do home school because i cant handle being in a class full of people.
I know exactly how you feel....I've always been shy but recently its been getting worse and worse to where I can't speak to anyone except my family...I'm in college and I've done well in large classes where I can sit in the back and disappear, but in a small class where I have to talk more I do terrible and often skip classes and presentations..
at around 30 second into the clip, you literally were pushing fear out of your eyes...see how the camera has a hard time focusing? its because you are pushing fear out, and it had to refocus that energy. check out my video about social anxiety
Hi chris,i know exactly what your going through.i've been dealing with it for 8 years,of my life.i've always been shy,but been i was younger i would get used to my surroundings, and just be myself.now that i've gotten older, its getting harder and harder everyday.i have no friends,im depressed and i just got a new job,and i dread going everyday, because i know i'll have to socialize,i try to avoid it as much as posssible.i hate this part of me,im afraid to socialize with people, even my own family.
S'all good. My social skills don't even bloody exist.

its harder for black people with this because
1. we have to live up to this hype that we are masculine and tough and cool
2. we have to be confident and dont ask for help because other blacks wont know how to deal with a shy black guy..we dont get compassion from our peers as often

@FLATFEET3 White men aren't expected to be masculine? But I do kind of agree that it would be harder to be a black guy.

Mate, you seem like one cool chilled cat. I wouldn't worry about changing your expression, its a really nice one.
You could look into mindfullness meditation to quiten your mind and anxiety so when it comes to more challenging situations like group / public speaking your be more centred on the inside.

Hello Chris, it's the same name as my brother's.
I'm french, but we don't care ^^.
I know what social anxiety.
I discovered that I had SA in university like you, but in fact I already had younger even I was not conscious of it...
Since my childhood, it bothered me to talk with other people and to introduce myself...
I'm no treated for this now, I take paroxetine and it works very well.
Before I was so sick that i could not go outside, and now I can, fortunately.
Consider AS is a kind of desease

You need to keep moving, no matter how you feel, no matter how hard it is to get out of bed, no matter how hard it is to feel wanted, loved, etc..
As long as your moving, you have a chance to balance out the crappy mental state we were given. I'm Way older and all my life.
Never stop, keep fighting, even when you feel that the end is near. "It's tempting to sit and wait for life to come to you. But it can't, it's too busy. Life is out there. You have to go for it." ~Harry Beckwith

Stresseaze didnt work for me either.
Fish oil and a vitamin b complex helped me tremendously though!! they are both known to reduce anxiety (and depression). it'll take a week or so to notice but take them consistently and give it a chance! goodluck! you're not alone
turnupthegood55 1 year ago

Please continue to make videos.
ord2jpn 1 year ago
@ord2jpn I totally understand who you are ord2jpn. I am considered a good catch to females, but like you, I spend my time as a loner. Always have been since I was young.
I am probably a bit older and have done more in my past than most that don't suffer, but the older I get, the worse it seems to get. I used to balance out this crappy mental state with focusing on helping others.
But with age comes less time you have for yourself, which only adds to the problem. The best to you ord..

I suffered from SAD since I was about 9 yo. I started working on it about 5 years ago (I'm 34 now).
I didn't enjoy my chilhood, my teens, nor my 20's.
I have no SAD anymore. I'm having a blast. Just find what works for you. Read, get yourself into it. Nobody will do it for you.
For me, it was hardwork with Comprehensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, medication and a good therapist plus now group therapy.
I didn't know the journey was gonna be so long but I wouldn't change it for the world.
MRBBJC 1 year ago
@MRBBJC Thank you for your comments. I am a bit older than you and just now starting to deal with it, through counseling.
When I was younger, I dealt with this mental state, by staying active, helping others, etc. But the older I get, I realized that I just balanced out the anxiety with good works helping kids and others.
Now I have to deal with it, probably due to mid life crisis, regrets, etc... that just add to the whole anxiety crap. I would say, stay healthy, keep moving, never stop.
rob80nikki 1 year ago
@rob80nikki Thank you. I'm still on my therapy group and it's amazing how much I learn things about myself through the most unexpected ways.
For everyone one out there, you have to believe that you can make it if you want to have a shot at it.
Once again, I recomend everybody to check out Comprehensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Hard daily work, repetition and positive emotions.
I'm here to everyone who wants to talk.

Im dealing with s.a.d and can totally relate to what you are going through. My s.a.d. was so bad ive almost commited suicide several times, i have seriously had a gun in my mouth more than once. All i can say is if you dont have s.a.d you dont understand what its like.

I know how u feel. No medication will work because it's the vicious circle of negative thoughts in our heads that we need to change. Medication can't change our thoughts. we have to try and monitor the thoughts we have when out in social situations and try and challenge them. when you get a thought like 'everyones looking at me' LOOK AROUND YOU and say 'is everyone really looking at me?' try it just once and get back to me to tell me what happens! x

maybe not the ideal solution, but if psychological treatments doesn´t work,
propranolol+benzodiazepin will do the trick.
