  • Great sound, great playing, great composition!

  • OK you win

  • Comment removed

  • Is it just me or did he move impossibly fast around the 3 minute mark? Like it's sped up a bit.

  • Those drums are K-mart specials

  • What amazes me is this misconception that in order to be a good musician, you have to LIKE what they produce! That's just not true. Bozzio is a true musician and percussionist and has some of the most amazing skills in working a kit out there. It doesn't mean you have to like the sound but please.....for the sake of what music is.....enjoy what he can accomplish.

  • Also, I'd like to see anyone of you losers who posted a negative comment here either transcribe or post a video of you doing what he did. You can say whatever you want - especially on youtube's coward-attracting comment threads- but if you're not innovating, or at least learning how to express yourself through your instrument, you're utterly useless. And Pro-Tip: If a good drummer hears you dis bozzio, you'll have a 5B stickin' out yer asshole

  • Regarding everyone's bickering about the sound of his toms...In a band situation, I'm not sure if it would be appropriate. Maybe so but idunno. However, this isn't a band. Its one person exploring the different sonic possibilities of his kit. I've never heard a solo like this one. I've never heard drums like these. If you're interested in doing whats already been done, you have no place the world of music. At least try and appreciate that part of it.

  • Bozzio is an incredible drummer whose stick work is the envy of most drummers. However its not my chosen cup of tea and id sooner watch someone like Jojo Mayer on a 4 piece kit than this though that doesnt mean I dont admire Bozzio's work.

  • His single strokes really are awesome, and the concept of the solo is well done just the sound of the the drums itself it's not what I would like to remember from a such a great musician and drummer such as Terry Bozzio.

    Andy

  • He's a wimpy drummer if you ask me. Not very creative either.

  • @GumGreed I agree he thinks hes creative just because he dose a bunch of random rools and because he has a big drummset he thinks hes realy good

  • If you don't like terry bozzio for all the contributions to drumming he has made then you're not a musician, you can probably just play regurgitated beats you heard on the radio. Go listen to a Nickelback album fags

  • Terrible drum sound! Awful!

  • Loved ya' in 'Labyrinth'.

  • انه يمص

  • he is always so god damn boooooooooooring

  • terry bozzio might even be one of the most talented drummers out there, but he still has no fucking visual nor acoustical taste whatsoever

  • hey everyone! Lets dislike this because he is too amazing and we all are jealous of his talent!

  • I like the part of the kit that's black.

  • what a freak!!

  • reminds of step brothers when will ferrel has a fuck about on the kit

  • Bozzio wishes his kit was THAT small these days...

  • that man makes drums alive. i am just watching and feeling what he is... drums are talking. drums are walking . they are alive for those who can hear them, who has an eyes far watching them

  • The Remo drums sound better than the DW's...

  • Imma say the two bad ass drummers are terry bozzio and mike mangini...awesome drummers for real.....need i say more....

  • what are those spoke things

  • booooooooooorring

  • Great drummer but..... toms sounds like a tennis racket.

  • @urbancasbah uh where can i buy those tennis rackets??? lmao

    !

  • Comment removed

  • @urbancasbah :D lol, your true , but dont forget, that this is a 1 9 8 8. .

  • @urbancasbah Terry Bozzio solo drums 1988

  • @urbancasbah As you can see by his current style nowadays this was all for looks, back then black drum heads didn't have the tone they do now.

  • @urbancasbah

His single stroke rolls and double hand crossovers smoke your tennis racket ass.

  • I like Terry Bozio style. He did what a lt of drummers would be afraid of doing. He was daring to play in such a way, and fortunately he did well.

  • I really dont see anything impressive.

  • Very predictable and somewhat boring...but nice chops...

  • @freein2339 you gotta see him live man

  • @dclarkboi1 Ok...I'll keep that in mind...

  • @freein2339 how good are you?

  • @dclarkboi1 Goof enough to know a boring preditable drum solo when I hear it...However , he is very talented with monster chops....

  • y'know, he is talented and all, but really? It takes more than showboating skill to make good music. *cough* Peart delivers.

  • @DOMECHOPBRAINS u ood enough to play with frank Zappa? u better be lol

  • The Bruce Lee of Drumming!!

  • Terry is getting all those fills out of his system... you know, the ones he couldn't play in Missing Persons.

  • I watch this drum solo once a month.

  • back when bozzio still had crashes in his kit

  • I didn't know an Ebony Pinstripe on a 16 inch floor tom could sound like a timbale. You learn something new everyday I guess

  • I think it's against the law to have hair like that nowadays.

  • u suck men!

  • what a shity sound

  • @koledrum what a shitty comment

  • This is back from when he had a small-ish kit. Great drummer.

  • @amithabajan2 Yeah, I think this is his 'jazz kit'.

  • If you hear the great Sound you forget the hairstyle :-D

  • not my fave drummer, but that's a top notch mullet

  • @bloodsling I don't see any ears.

  • @bloodsling and speaking of tennis, Andre Agassi had a mullet; that is not mullet. This is 80's hair band hair combined w/the most innovative drumming ever heard.

  • VIVA BOZZIO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • SE MATA VIADO

  • soundsuck system...

  • this dude wrote the dictionary on sound or something fool. geez luis.

  • these drums sound kinda like water bottles or bouncy balls, but more refined. neat.

  • All the negative comments crack me up. They don't know their ASS from a hole in the ground.

  • THAT UNINSPIRED SOUND SUCKS !!!!!!

  • I can't understand his music.

  • Not so good

  • Fell asleep!

  • It's not bad, it's just boring and unorganized. Not my taste at all.

  • @Purtilar316 gee, this wasnt boring to me and it seems very structured and organized as if he methodically designed everything about it which im sure he did. this solo is a freaking ass kicker! the new drummer of dream theater also did an amazing solo w roto toms for toms a long time ago his name escapes me; mike m...

  • @sticksbass Mike Mangini. I saw him live. He's unbelievable!

  • @atrophiedcingulate I worked on a Steve Vai tour in 1996 (maybe 35 shows, as a tech for Keneally, who was opening for Vai as well as playing in Vai's band). Mangini was the drummer then with his Terry-inspired all rototom kit with that symmetrical set up. I regarded him as a Bozzio clone, but that's not to say he isn't pretty damned amazing with the mathematical stuff and the presentation. His independence and ambidexterity was totally enviable.

  • @sticksbass Mike Portnoy

  • @Sasuke10032 Portnoy is the original drummer for Dream Theater. The new drummer is Mike Mangini.

  • @Purtilar316 ...mangini

  • If a drummer whose been playing for 3 months put this on people would call it crap

  • @IanTheDinosaur This is actually really true.

  • no tocas nada weyyyyyyyyyyy puras mamadas

  • I hate him

  • Simply phenomenal. Original in every respect. Elegant, eloquent; sure shades (particularly the singles over the various voices), of Tony Williams- yet completely distinctive. Truly an inspiration.

  • Someone should put a censor on his hair...

  • It's hard to imagine that he has had 23 years more practice since this.....

  • ex zappa

    great drummer

  • In 4:17 starts to play the same melody than neil peart? why? in 1988

  • dartjoey13 You talk shit... Just work on the butter side up theory... It would keep you busy and away from your keyboard.

  • If any of you haters could play better than bozzio.... lets see it then fuckwits! The man's a fucking hero to the drumming world. Shut up and go wank to your Travis Barker videos.

  • @drumsallot

Amen. the only people who don't see the amazingness of terry are:

    non-drummers

    mainstreamists

I love underground hardcore bands above all other music, but terry's stuff > any band i listen to

  • "Kummeli - Luomisen Tuskaa - Paha Kurki"

    y t u b e /watch?v=tHLY5pgnjYg

  • Paha kurki!

    TI-DI-DIII täälä haisee!

  • Thinking man's percussionist.

  • 1:28 only the drummer terry bozzio can play as a crab would play it

  • If an amateur drummer posted a video of them playing this exact solo, people would think it's shit. So can somone please explain why this is regarded as such amazing work..

  • @floopstuh Its simple, an amateur couldnt post a video playing this exact solo, because its genious and a masterpiece. If you cant see it you are either retarded or shouldnt play drums.

  • this is just the most famous work of bozzio and I belive its kinda bad... D: he has better solos that this, this one is kinda bored, so fast, lacks of a real groove, he is way, and I really mean WAAAAAY better now, the 1st job I saw of bozzio was this... I was like "WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING?" then I saw others solos and it was like "O.o god!! this is just so awesome"

  • His feet work wasn't worth to mention back then.

  • Major LOL at 1:28

  • HOW IS THIS SKILL! PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS

  • If you look at it from an analytical perspective it's quite genius. He designed his solo like a work of classical music. He exposed the themes, developed them, returned, made new themes, and showed off his amazing technical skills in the process as well as his compositional skills. It's no accident that he was featured in Modern Drummer's Drum Gods. He took the stuff from this and changed drumming with Melodic Drumming and the Ostinato after Solo Drums.

  • @darthjoey13

that was in 1988, its 2011 now

i think he is one of the top ten drummers in the world

and i agree that he has changed mutch, so one of the best drummers in the world

    Use Dax!!!

  • OXII MIM, QUE BICHO DOIDO.

  • Clearly, Bozzio has sick skills. Also very clear is that those Remo drums sound like total shit, and his facial expressions are embarrassing to even watch. Pretentious and image-conscious as they come, but a great drummer. And to be fair, he's less "glitzy" now.

  • Used to own this video...Bozzio is a BEAST.

  • the toms sound like marching tenors

  • this is retarded and pretentious.

  • @legendtwig I've never seen a video that is so stupid to non-drummers while at the same time being so impressive to drummers.

Terry Bozzio's ideas are very intriguing and musical, but to the introductory listener, they sound like crap! I'd know-- I saw this video about three years ago. It was utter crap to me. Since taking up the drums, the stuff in this video is sounding better all the time.

  • @needlearmor Bearing in mind i have been playing drums and percussion for upwards of 10 years, and the flute and trombone (fuck yeah man) in all sort of ensemble since i was12, i still stand by my previous statement that this is bollocks.

This solo has no dynamic or flow, and bozzio seems to assume that tuning drums in this manner will inject melody automatically. It doesn't.

It's not necessary for the abstract and difficult to be good music.

  • @legendtwig It's an instructional video - the idea is that he's playing a "solo" that features techniques and all the various drums in the kit. Not something to rock out to.

  • @zubiac

that drum kit is probably worth more than ur life

    :(

  • Absolute fucking wank.

  • did someone piss on his snare?

  • wtf at 3:19?

and this gotta be the worst sounding drumkit I have ever heard. the couple of cans and pans my friends baby drums on sound better.

  • @zubiac He's just being a melodic drummer. If you listen to the way his drums are tuned, they're tuned diatonicly, that's why they sound the way they do. His drumkit now, is so huge it's tuned both diatonicly as well as chromatically, he's a very very educated musician. Not just a drummer.

  • best hair ever!

  • Really unique sounding drumset man. So experimental!!

  • Amazing!!

  • this solo tells a story

  • So hilariously shit :P

  • Reminds me of Animal from The Muppets. But Bozzio wow he was/is awesome.

  • 00:54 he's like "ooh! i think im gonna play this thingy now!"

  • amazing how he keeps the count even though it sounds like he's way out there;D

  • so cool the part in 6:51 to 6:52

  • i swear you lot are watching a different video to me

    this is shit lol

  • @shameless12341 It's more like a technical exhibition than a traditional "solo." Look up "bozzio double stroke solo" for a better solo by him from the 90s.

  • @shameless12341

Fuckin' polyrhythms, how do they work?

  • @zyphoid666 Simple. It's just a matter of math. It is how the two different rhythms correspond. For example, if you try and play 3/4 over 4/4, you would have to play the 4/4 rhythm 3 times to the 3/4's 4 times for them to correspond. And that's how you keep count with them.

  • @Lycanlord378

Oh I know I was being cheeky (referring to that ICP meme "fuckin' magnets, how do they work?"). I've been a huge Zappa fan along with other experimental stuff like Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Primus, John Zorn et al. I also took music in post-secondary where I learned most of this complicated theory as a classical student. So when people go "it sounds stupid" I figure they don't know what's actually going on whereas I'm like "fuck yeah how the hell does he do that so easily?" Cheers

  • How does he get that snare sound?

  • @drumfreakruss3 i think it's like cow skin or sumthin

  • @bubblz1414 It's just a Remo Fiberskyn. Terry Bozzio is one of the drummers who brought them out of just being a jazz head.

  • Bloody hell this is ultra-pro-league right here. Easy to see why Zappa picked him.

  • oh...likr it nice cool solo

  • He is just the most amazing musician I have ever seen. It almost defies belief. WOW
